Tun HRE. ] Ttio wheat market wus steady
at considerable improvement In price * nnd
with only a fair business dor.o In futures.
Cables came In weak ( or spot wheat and fu
tures wora represented ns displaying declin
ing tendencies. Now York had news to re
port on both" sides , but the drltt of Intelli
gence from that place win bearish In Us lu
ll ti on co. One dispatch waa sent out from
tliero that twenty boat loads had been taken
and another named thirty boat loads us the
quantity. Thcso reports worcv denied and
found few believers. H wai stoutly main
tained by persons usually correct that there
not only hadn't been any export business
worth mentioning , but that there was noth
ing that looked llito Konulno Inquiry by for
eigners for wheat ut anything like the uricct
now ruling. At the sumo time it is not true
that there is not a good trnrio la
flour , both for homo and foreign
account. The seabourd clearances of
flour and wheat wore equally about 2,000
bushels to-day , nnd western millers hnva
orders ahead ns n rule for nil the Hour they
can grind. One sale of 10,000 barrels was
reported from Milwaukee to-dny , and offers
accepted for 0,000 barrels moro. Minneap
olis ana St. Louis mills are having ail they
can attend to. The receipts at primary
points are slightly below the recent average
total , but the movement In the northwest , so
far as it can bo Judged from the receipts itt
Minneapolis and Dulutli , is not lottlUR up to
any appreciable extent. Arrivals there
to-day footed up101,000 bushels , nnd to-mor
row's estimate is for over 800 cars. An cstl-
mate of 2,000 cars for Monday was afloat , but
was voted as too premature to bo reliable.
The receipts at Chicago amounted to " 00
cars , of which 85 cars were of contract
grade. In splto of the heavy receipts the
northwestern markets are hold
ing very well. Duluth receded
J < fc , but at Minneapolis No. 1 northern
wus in aetlvo demand at 7Gii ( > 7 ( > Kc. There
were two other items of news that cut some
figure perhaps. The first and most import
ant Is the continuance of rams through the
southwest and a gradual extension of the
rain east of the Mississippi. Tlio second was
the report that Dodge Iind revised his Oc
tober estimate , mukmg the production less
than on the lOMi. The foundation of the
latter report may probaoiy bo found In the
issuance of a printed October report , from
which Homebody has been able to ilguro re
sults slightly nt variance with tlio original
bulletin. Locally the speculative market
wus not particularly Interesting.Ilutcnnson
and Liudblom were the moat conspicuous
buyers and led on that side. Thosclling was
moro generally distributed than the buying ,
thouuti as conclusions show the buying side
wac the most influential. December opened
nt 70J c , advanced by easy nnd quiet stages
to 80/Jc , receded about noon to TOpfo again ,
nnd during the lust hour recovered
the lost ground nnd cstaollslio'l a
little gain over the previous figures ,
doing to bO o and closing ut the top. May
started in with sales nt } { c range. The first
onicml quotation was 83-J6c , but there were
few sales as low as S33Cc. ( The market then
advanced to 88j ? @ 83&c , receding to 63 c ,
but climbing subsequently to Sic , which was
the closing pricu. The feature of trading , as
far ns anything was developed , was the relatively -
tivoly greater strength of May , which now
commands a premium of 3c over December.
Inquiry for May was especially active.
There was moro interest In corn than has
been usual of late and pronounced strength
in near deliveries , with May sharing In a
lesser degree the general firmness , 'liio re
ceipts were thirty-one cars under the quantity
figured on yesterday , but the canol arrivals
of 11,800 bushels came near filling the gap.
The out-lnspoctlon was , however , heavy ;
amounting to 413,070 , bushels , but of this
quantity not one bushel was of straight No.
3 grnao- Export clearances were liberal
nnd foreign markets were quoted firm , al
though the latest quotations from Liverpool
were 14d lower than reported on the day be
fore. The present moderate receipts and
prevailing ruins are features which were
chiefly responsible for the firmness which
occurred , moro especially In near deliveries.
A general breaking up of country roads will
further curtail the recoluts and wet or dump
weather would make No. 2 corn from the
new crop a scarce commodity iu December
and possibly in November should those
weather conditions last well Into the next
month. The short Interest bought rather
freely nnd offerings were light , November
started at Olc , or } ( [ a over its closing price
yesterday , nnd it advanced to 31 } c , closing
nt ni 'o , or > f o higher than on the day bo-
foro. May opened at 83@i3 ! , ' c , advanced 2jfc
moro to JJ3ifo and closed at ! H ? o , orfio
higher than on the day before. May opened
nt 83@33 > < c , advanced } e up to U3 ! o nnd
closed nt ; j © 33 ; c.
Oats were in no particular active , with a
fair business done in futures at n shudo
firmer prices , while cash lots were dull nnd
weaker than future deliveries , ns gilt edge
receipts dated to-day were offered nt 1S@
18 , ' o. The early llrmnces in extended do-
HvcHcR was duo chiefly to the influence ex
erted by the strength of corn , and May sold
nt St ( j31J/p , with quietude prevailing later.
January sold at ll ) @ 10 o. October sold ut
ISc and No. 'J oats to go to store at that fig
ure.
ure.Tho clique nro still under pork. That , nt
least. Is the opinion held by a majority of the
provision dealers. They were buying both
October and November to-day , and although
prices for deliveries beyond October were al
lowed to case oft a little during
the forenoon , October presented a steady nnd
firm front nt nround $10.70 < < iOl0.7'5 ' , or about
yesterday's closing. There was scarcely n
doubt that the parties Interested will carry
the deal Into November. That future is sell
ing nt DO@J.r ! o premium over January , nnd
the normal difference is fully that much the
other way , Intrinsically November Is worth
no moro than year , and It closed to-day nt a
premium of 55o per barrel over tlio latter.
The packing crowd , including Swift , Ar
mour and Underwoodvoro fair sellers ol
porlr , and Ualdwln sold quite a line of Jan
uary , supposed to liu long stuff. ITutchhiEon
was u fair buyer of nil the active futures.
After sliding off 7K@12Ko in early dealings ,
the market rallied nnd held steady with n firm
undertone until the oloso. Lard ruled quiet
nnd uvorugcd n shade stronger , there being
no features Iu this branch of trade and onl.v
a moderate speculative business. Illb fu
tures were also reported good nnd prices
steady. At the six loading points to-day the
arrivals were 7,000 head larger than on the
corresponding day in 18S3. Liverpool reported
ported lurd dull , with prices } ( a lower foi
both spot and futures. Bacon was steady
nnd In fair demand. The Now York inarkci
for lard was ttrongor. A ruthor loss urgent
slnpulug demand for the product has existed
for the past two or three days , liased on
yesterday's closing quotations tot futures ,
October aud November pork closed Si

TUB Br.K.l STOCKS The stock market
opened active nnd steady , and shortly bo-
cam o feverish nnd unsettled. There was
nothing definite In the talk of the street late
or early. There nppoarod to bo n general
disposition to watt rather than force the
movement. The boar talk about Vlllard
being dangerously sink was not well founded ,
although ho Is kept nt homo by Illness. In
trading this morning there was a stubborn
resistance to any advance , and Chicago bear
houses supplied the market. t'lrU prices
showed n dilTercnuo from last evening's Hi-
ures extending to ? per cent , either way ,
while Northern Pacific was exceptional with
n decline of per cent. "Tho general list
was quiet to dull , but Union Pacific , Mis
souri Paclllc , nnd Louisville & Nashville ,
among the stocks of the regular
list , and Sugar Kcflncrics and Cotton
Oil among the trusts were nctlvo nnd gave to
the dealings what character ttioy possessed.
Sugar was the feature of the market , being
very Irregular and feverish. After opening
nt 72 > It declined to 71f , but then rose 1 per
cent , from which point it rapidly declined to
' 1. The general list advanced slowly nnd
cams ranged up to } per cent , but the drop
in Sugar checked the advance and some re
cession was mode , though a firmer tone was
afterwards shown. During the hour to noon
the improvement was quite general. Sugar ,
after touching 70,1fi recovered quickly to 72 ,
Cotton Oil rose a point from the opening to
43V , nnd Chicago Gas sold at 55. Coal stocks
moved up uniformly % per cent , nnd Gran
gers showed $ i@ ) { per cent gain over the
close last night. Louisville , Lake Shore
and Northern Pacific preferred were
Irregular nnd Inclined to weakness.
This proved to bo a good day on the buying
flldo of stocks. Not only were railway stocks
firm to the close at very flattering advances ,
but trusts recovered from the early nervous
ness and weakness and closed materially
higher for the day. During the closing
hours the shorts saw that the forces were
against them and they tut ned In ns buyers ,
but not without Doing ulucked somewhat.
The not gains for thn day were from 1 to 2
per cent , railway shares showing the most
activity. Northern Pacific preferred , Atchl-
son , St. Paul , Union Pacific and Missouri
Pacific gained 1 per cent each , nnd North
western 1 > , Hock Island lc' nnd Lacka-
wanna 3 per cent. Chicago Gas also gained
2 per cent to 50' < fc nt the close. The earn
ings of all the roads rcuortlng were most
excellent. Money was easier nt 4@0 per
cent. The outlook is much improved. The
total sales wore 221,409 shares.

Cattle sold steady again to-day , although
Chicago was reporting an easier market. So
long as the rccciuts of beeves , especially

is no citsy matter for the buyers to gain a re
