Since the ' 'white motor" has been in oper-
ntion on Twenty-fourth and Sixteenth
streets the cable conductors report u great
falling oil in the patronage of the cable
lines.
The present indications are that the motor
line to South Omaha will not bo in operation
for a month.
The p.eoplo living on South Thirty-second
street say they are getting tired of the prom
ises of the Omaha Street railway company
to build u. line south from Pacific street , nnd
are agitating the subject of building a line
themselves to Soutu Omaha. Already there
has been half enough pledged to construct
the line and put it in operation.

Onpnso ( lie Viaduct.
There seems to bo some stumbling blocks
in the way of the proposed viaduct over the
Belt line on Loavonworih street and the
most formidable one is the Missouri Pacific
company. Superintendent Rathbun is quot
ed as saying that it would bo an Injustice to
build a viaduct out in the country and that
the Missouri Pacific would fight such n pro
ject to ttio do.ith. Ho claims that the laws of
the state do not compel them to do this , and
as the last quarter of the viaduct lies out ot
the city It would bn governed by state nnd
not by city laws. This then would bo sulll-
clcnt to suvo them from any compulsion In
Jjuilding the structure. Ho says further
that the viaduct Is only a scheme on the part
of some real estate men who own property on
, tlib hill west of the crossing and wisu to
suvo themselves the expense of grading.
