THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : THURSDAY , OCTOBER 17 , 1889. 3 THE SPECULATIVE BARKER Wheat Fairly Active and Steady Within a Narrow Zlungo. AN ABSENCE OF LIFE IN CORN. Ontn Blmro In tlio fJoncrnl Qitlclmto 1'rovlsloiifi 1'rovo Quito liiicrest- IIIR lo Trailers Untdo Do- tniintl Knlr HORH Lower. CHICAGO PUOnUCH MA.IUU2T9. CCnteno , Oo 10. fSpccIal Talc rnm to TUB Ui.n.j Tlio wlicni market wns lalrly nctlvo nnil steady \vithm n narrow rnngc , ttio tendency being In the direction of nn Improvement la values. This was n surprise to the majority of tlio traders , who leaned to tfio boor stdo for n variety of reasons , among others weak nnil quiet cables , larqo Inillan nnil Russian shipments , . advanced ocean freight , lack of now export business for Kuropo or the continent , the enormous movement In tlio northwest , ami the nddl- tlonnl faith that Chicago prices tire quite as high , w tlioso ruling at surrounding markets. The dry weather In tlio winter wheat coun ' try has been one of the Itillucncos f ivorlnij > > 4 the bulls , reports from many sections Indi cating serious alarm on that account , The drouth In Missouri ami Kansas scorns to liavo boon broken , however , according to the weather report * , but , the ground lu as dry as n bono throughout the greater part of the Ohio v.illoy up to the present writing. There h , however , promise of rain. Other bullish Influences may ba found In the a in nil Btoulcs of contract wheat and In the active presence of strong friends of wliont In all of the speculative markets. No matter how great the outpouring of long property maybe bo , or how heavy the speculative offerings , the stuff Is absorbed , and tlio tnaricot stiffens unilcr the load. This is ono thing that at tracts the personal notlco of scalpers and the generality of market watchers. It Is getting to bo almost as gro.it n mystery what becomes of the offerings of futures as It has been whatbocotnos of the great mass of wheat that has loit fanners' hands. The board's correspondent made nn increase of about 1,5'JO,000 ' bushels on passage , some what less than Hoorbohm's figures. Receipts nt primary points continue to bo very lar o , the postings to ; lav showing about S3OJO ! ) bushels arrived at western points and 037- 422 bushels received at all points east und west , iigutnst 39,597 bushels shipped , of which 115,000 bushels loft the coun try. Northwestern receipts wcro largo , Minneapolis getting f > 31 cars. On accouot of the blockade only 151 cars wcro registered at Duluth. Elevator people la northern Minnesota and North Dakota say that the rush of wheat from llrst hands has never boon heavier than nuw and that the extent of the movement is only restricted by the capacity of the lolling stock. December opened ut S'-'c , advanced to S2jf@SSJic ( , sold off lo 81J < c , worked up to 8 40 , hung for a long time nround b'J'fC'ZWj c , and then during the last half hour got strong and ad vanced to S2' @ 621 < c , closing ut b'-Wtfi1. May opened utS5c , sold off to 84Jgo , up to 85' ' c , oil again to 844C. up to S5\c , reacting frac tionally , but closing at fcS o. There was llt- tlo trad I iiir In October , which opened atbOtfe and closed at bO c. Tlio net gain for the day was V c. Other domestic markets kept along in line with Chicago. There was the same absence of life In the speculative brunch of the corn business which 1ms so long distinguished it , accompanied by the same apparent de spair of higher prices. A falling off in receipts was the only feature from which comfort could bo drawn uy the bulls , butthoy are not sufllclontly marked or long continued to give alarm to the shorts. The operators last referred to stand pat on tuoir sales and tuko advantage of any rally in price to increase their lino. There was some trading to-day and for tlio lirst time on this crop In .luuo and July corn , the former selling between two prominent operators at 823fc , ntid the first sale of July was at 'A.v \ , but later it sold down to 8'Jj c. There was n good Inquiry for May at 3.tc , but November was freely offered bv a prominent speculator lu any desired quantity. Fluctuations In price wcro both slight ami infrequent and the closing quotations are only slightly nltcroil from the figures at the corresponding tlmo of the day before. October closed at OJ4'30Kc , November at Ul 'o and May ut Outs hharcd the general quietude , with tlio Bpoculativo market dull and easy in tone , trade being chielly In Mr.y , with .iear futures almost at a standstill. May opened fully steady attK' i1 , but Hutchinson later offered it nt ! ! 2@2' ! ' c , and trade was chlully at that and ut the Inside , with December - comber going at I'J'fo ' ' nnd subsequently of- lorcd at ihat , No. 3 whlto for May attracted seine attcmlon , selling early at 21' ( ! ? 3J e , but were eventually oftorod at 24Jf. Ho- ceipts fell mutorially below the estimate and withdrawals for shipments were liberal. No. 2 regular was steady nt ISJfo. Provision traders found the market quito Intcrostiutr , There was no great activity , but there w s moro doing than on either of the former dnjB of tlio week and the busi ness transacted appeared to attract general attention. Hutehiiison , however , was the lanrest , individual operator. Ho bought pork nnd ribs for January delivery witli frc'jdom. Ills purchases , in fact , are sulllclont to In duce rather free covering upon thu part of the Bhorts. In October pone trading was liKht. ranging nt $10.75@U.OO and closing at $10.05. or 20o higher tnau yesterday. The clique was ngnln defeated hi its in junction proceedings before .the state judiciary. The supreme court of Illinois ut Ottawa denied the writ. In the United States court application wns made for an In junction , which will bo considered on Mon day. The clique has boon taking matters connected with the market , quietly of Into. The now rbrlc offered to its representatives In settlement of contracts has been cither refused or taken under protest , and In Its course there has boon no change or now de velopments. In the general trade the short interest outstanding for October Is said to bo much smaller than expected. The clique now owns about 70,000 , barrels of perk. In the general trade u stronger feeling was the rule to-duy. Bused on yesterday's final prices , the closings Indicated an advauca of Sii c on October and November lard , October short ribs and November pork , So on Janu ary short ribs nnd 20c on January pork. January hud wns unchanged. CHICAGO MVI3 H TO CMC , Ciuotao , Oct. 10.Sp3cial [ Telegram to TUB Hun. ] CATn.B The demand was fair. Prlino cattle wcro not plentiful nnd prices wore steady all around. Medium and com mon grades ruled slow , yet wcro sold out atone ono prlco or another Texuns , especially common , were reported in good demand and steady. There was a good display of range tccrs on the market , many of which were the best seen hero In n month. Natlvo butchers' stock , especially old cows , nro not as plentiful as last week , with priuio heifers tolling bolter. There was fair business in the stacker and feeder line , but at the regu lation low price. The receipts of cattle were divided ut 8,000 natives , 0,000 Texans and 3,000 rangers. A feature of the early trading was the upturn m Sugar Trusts , The market eon developed considerable animation , which was nomowtmt better distributed than usual of late. Atchlson , Missouri Pacific , St. Paul , Lackawanna > Heading , Now Eng land and two trusts Sugar and Cotton Oil- wore the lenders In the matter of activity. The market was rather weak , however , whllo Atchtson was inclined to advance at first , and did rise } ( to 31 , but It quickly pave way with the rest of the list nnd declined to 29 , Iho rest of the general list followol with small fracllonal losses , though Missouri Pacific lost % and Oregon Transcontinental Jif per cent. Sugar opened upjf percent at 75J , lost this advance and then on a second bulge went up nearly 3 points over last night to 77 , ' . This action was followed by a very nice upturn In railroad shares before noon. Hurhnglon returned to 103 , Missouri Pacific reacted from GSJ { to Oajf , Hock Island from 91 to OU > f , St. Paul from 70 to 70Y , Loulsvlho from TO f to 80 ' , New England from 14Jjf to I" > , nnd Atchlson partly recovered by soiling at 30'f. Coal stocka acted with the Grangers la the early decline and the later recovery Lacknwanna from 112 to Utyg , and Heading from -15 to 45) . Thu gossips gave Cammnck credit for selling Gould stocks. Talk of the Have- incycr's soiling out Sugar was revived , but without nny effect. Many who until re cently thought the high rates for money duo to manipulation now concede that the 13 per cent rale lute yestordav was owing to a le gitimate scarcity of funds. The buying ot Atchlson and Louisville this morning was partly for London account , while much of the Increased strength after 11 o'clock was traced to purchases for bear operators. Money was up to noon quoted at C@7 per cent. Although the money market was again the opposing foaUtro of the advance in stocks with rates again forced up to 10 nnd 13 per cent , the stock market moro than bold Its own. The early declines woi o moro than recovered. Atchison had n checkered ca reer to the end , soiling up to 31J4 and closing at 31 , or ? par cent over last night. St. Paul was off fa nnd other Grangers wcro steady. Missouri Paclllo sold up to 70j and Union Pacific to 05,3 , both stocks closlncr with slight gains. Trusts closed with Cot ton ' and Suitar J per cent over last night. Tlio total sales were 170,000 shares. The following were tlio closing quotations : H. S.4s regular. 1-7 Noitliuru I'rtclllc. . Tlio decision of the Intor-stito 'commorco commission that trafllo utilondcd at any point for any other purpose than continued on ward progress becomes local trafllc , nnd must take the local rate Is aimed at the cus tom of stopping cattle at Houth Omaha , and , If sold to snippets , allowing thorn to go on at the through rates. Tins by no menus nftocls the "stop over" privilege which has always boon granted , but in casd the cattle are sold hero to a shipper or speculator , such bnyer cannot rcnhm the cattle In his own name on the through hilling , but must pay local rates. No one can , however , prevent , such cattle , nfter they are sold here , from being shipped on In the original owner's ' name , the buyer receiving nn order from the owner to have the cattle turned over on their arrival at Chicago cage or other points ot destination. The most thill tho'dcclslon can do Is to put ship pers to a little extra trouble. At the present time few cattle nro being bought hero for shipment lo eastern markets , the local pack ers and feeders taking about everything that is sold. ' OMAHA WllonBSAliB MAP.KRTS.
