bury rules , four ounce gloves , to n flnlsh ,
nnd It came oft In n beautiful sequestered
grove on the Iowa sldo of tha rlvor nbout S
o'clock yesterday afternoon , nnd while ll
lasted wns as full of animation as the busi
ness end of a honrut.
, Wilson , the local mnn and the winner , is n
new-comer nnd little Is known of him here
abouts , but that ho Is a topnotchor In the
In the middlo-wclght class none who saw
him perform yesterday can doubt. He Is
nbout twenty-six years of age , fi feet 0 , and
tipped the beam nt 1 10 pounds. McFnrlnnd ,
the Denver pug , U what h known in llstlo
parlance ns n dub. I In overtopped Wilson
in iivordupolso by four pounds , and wasii _
, oed counterpart for linn in height , rcaeli
ml ( jnmcncRS , but decidedly his Inferior in
cicnco nnd ring generalship.
Attho spot selected for the battle , the dciul
fox grass was burned away , and a twenty-
four foot ring pitched. These preliminaries
bclug cxpcdltously arranged thn selection of
n referee was attempted. About everybody
at the ring side was proposed and rejected
by ono of the principals or the other , nnd for
a tlmo it looked us If thu light would have to
bo declared oil owing to their inability to
agree.
Finally , however , nfter much persuasion ,
Charles H. Browning , a young limb of the
law from Lincoln , consented to act asthisinV
dispensable functionary. Timers were chosen
and the nnnouncement mndo that everything
was in readiness for the co.
Wilson won the toss and chose the south
west corner , which was considerably higher
than the one opposite , and without further
ado shied his Dunlnp and ciowded through
the ropes with his seconds , Sclciillllo Bill
Havno and Charlie Johnson ,
i MoFarlnnd , looking vengeful and defiant ,
quickly followed nnd seated himself opposite
his stocky young antagonist , his seconds ,
Bob Ferret and Tom Smith , pouring
words of wisdom and ndvico in nis willing
curs.
The mitts were donned nml the gladiator D
i throw off their overcoats , both showing up
lu splendid lighting llg. Wilson , in fuel ,
looked a very Hercules , with his broud
shoulders , deep chest , strong loins nnd sym
metrical pins. His skin glowed with life
and health , and ho looked every inch the
winner that he was. MeFnrland , too , exhi
bited more than passing form , with his well-
' 'muscled shoulders , conspicuous biceps and
supple limbs , yet he lacked the ceneral ap
pearance of illness that so finely marked his
adversary.
"Shako hands , gentlemen , " ordered the
referee , anil the two men went through the
formulary with evident eagerness nnd re
turned to their corners.
"Time. I"
Aud tl.o next moment they were together.
"Wilson eyed his man with tlio punctilious
ness of tno mnn of a score of flghti , but the
Denver pug seemed to consider no sizing up
necessary , nnd , suns ccromnnie. made a
headlong rush , swinging awkwardly with
his right , and landing inoflcctuully on Wil-
sonjs shoulder , receiving in return n left
counter In the Jaw that made his few re-
innlntiifj teeth rattle.
. ' ItOBcemcd for.u of lus-gruel , however , nnd
with an oath wentibaek tor some more. Ho
wiis .not disappointed. Wilson fiddled him
bacll toward the ropes , finally cutting loose
with bis right lor Mac's wind , which ho
'reached in such good shape , that Denver
dropped Ins guard. Then ho got it biff ,
smash , bung , in the neck , in the ear and in
thejnw. the local man doing all the work
with his terrible loft , rftsorvmg his right fern
n more precarious juncture if ono should
arise.
McFarlanil was groggy in a second , and , to
flnvo himself , essayed a clinch. For his pains
ho received n knock-down bio win the mouth.
The spectators thought ho was out , and the
referee began to count , when ho rolled over ,
scrambled to his feet , and undaunted , went
hack to his medicine. Ho threshed wildly
left nnd right , u'ntil it looked as if ho would
break his arms from sheer contact with the
air , and all through these calisthenics Wil-
sea kept jabbing persistently at hia nut. It
was go to sleep or clinch , and Mao did the
latter. Ho tried hard to throw his man , but
couldn't got in his work , although both went
down ou the cremated sward togcttier. Thof
were quickly up and at it again , nnd Wilson
wns systematically knocking the Denver
bo.v'a bend off , when tlmo was called.
Wilson ran lightly back to his chair , but
Muc reeled and staggered like a drunken
man and would imvo fallen iiom weakness
had not Ins seconds caught turn.
The timer * saw that the jig wns up , and
lonlontl.vO ) allowed thn pufllng fighters f uli
three minutes rest before they were again
Called to the scratch ,
Wilson was now sura of his man. He saw
ho had a dead easy murk , nnd waited with
confidence until ho reached the center of the
ring , when he went in to put on the kibosh.
WoFnrland had evidently concluded to
adopt other tactics , and us Wilson ran to
him , he clinched nnd again essayed to throw
him. But it was no go , for Wilson easily
broke away , exclaiming as ho did so , Want
to wrestle , do you I"
"Yes , " responded Muc , "I'll break every
hone lu your - . "
A smash In the mouth that sounded like a
two-bagger cut short the dialogue , and for
the next half-minute the Denver lad was
kept busy keeping his head on his shoulders.
Hq wont o vor iifrnlnst the ropes , only to bo
knocked to his kncc.s , and when ho regained
his legs , one , two , three , fourqulok Bmasliosi
from Wilson's handy loftsent him headlong
into the seared turf , Tlio blood gushed from
his mouth nnd nostrils in a stream ; he
clawed the ground in a dared way , lifted up
his head , tried to rise , but rolled over with a
grrtun.
"One , " began the referee ,
McFnrlund groaned ami spit out a mouth-
full of blood.
"Two. "
Ilo endeavored to rlf > o , but fell buck with
hii head in the cinders as limp and listless as
