A Groundless Humor.
For several days past It tins been rumored
that certain parties in the city claimed to bo
possessed of certain facts regarding the
death of William Spears , which would shift
the responsibly for the murder to other
shoulders than thono on which It uow rests.
A woman living In the vicinity of where the
murder occurred , dropped the remark that
she was acquainted with Brown , the alleged
murderer , had known him , In fact , since ho
was a llttlo boy , and would not sea him hung.
She alleged that n third party was Implica
ted , and remarked mysteriously that if the
police could ilnd him they would have the
man who killed Spcurs.
Officer Cuslck took up the clue , nnd yester
day morning located the woman at nor
homo , corner of Avcnuo A and Eighteenth
street. She proved to bo an aunt of the
suspected man , and her nauio is also Brown.
A searching examination proved lhat she
know nothing whatever about the case. The
oftlcer was satisfied , when ho learned of the
relationship , that the woman was not pos
sessed of any information that woiild lead
o any now developments in the case , still he
continued his Investigations , -with the result
stated. It transpires that her sympathy for
icr nephew led her to declare that ho was
innocent , and suffei ing for another's crime ,
wnllo In fact she know nothing whatever of
the caso.
The case now stands as hcretofora , with
nothing to indicate the part others may
tiavo played in the tragedy. Brown Is still
in confinement , and the grand jury Is Investi
gating the caso. The examination of wit
nesses hus been going on for two days , and
is not yet concluded.

t'ronprctlvn Oil Macni\t s ,
Colonel Wells Cook * has returned from
Carbon county , AVyomlng , where ho went to
look after the interests of the Producers'
Consolidated Land and Petroleum company ,
) f Omaha , of which ho is manager , nnd the
Ilnwkoyo Coal and Oil company , of this
city , of which Lo Is superintendent. Ho ro-
aorts Hading everything in a most promis
ing condition , far exceeding even his most
sanguine expectations. A good flow of oil
was struck at a depth ot 215 foot , and the
companies are only waiting for adequate
facilities for transuortutiou to go deeper ,
and nro confident that they will strike-
"gushers" that will rival the gro.it wells of
Pennsylvania. The Held is very extensive ,
und Colonel Cook predicts that the result of
tlio strike will be of great moment to the entire -
tire western country. The assessment work
for 18SO on tlio numerous quarter sections
comprising the property of these two com
panies has Just boon completed , nnd all is In
readiness to proceed with the development
of the fields as soon as the necessary rail
road lines can bo built. Colonel Cook
brought homo with him some very rich oil
sand , which burns like coal , and oil experts
say that it indicates a very rich Held and oil
in unlimited quantities. As may bo sup
posed , the stockholders nro Jubilant , and the
indications are that Council Bluffs will
shortly bo the homo of a score of second
editions of the once famous Coal Oil Johnny ,
of Pittsburg.

STRANGE ACTIONS OF ANIMALS.
They Seem Able 10 Korctrll the Coin-
Intt of an Earthquake.
The lower animals nra said to bo
greatly terrified by earthquakes , nnd
their excitement beforehand is some
times sulllciont to toll the event. No
doubt they know well enough that
something terrible is takingplace. .
Prof. Milne , a student of volcanic
phenomena , has recently given various
instances of their behavior nt such
times , says the Youth's Companion.
During the Tokio earthquake of 1880
cats ran about the houses trying to
escape ; foxes barked , and horses ut-
tomuted to kick donvn the boards con
fining them in their stables. In the
Lisbon earthquake of 1740 i-onch and
other fish in a eanul showed signs of
confusion and fright , and fish have
boon known , niter an earthquake , to
rise to the surface dead nnd dying.
Most interesting of all nro the obser
vations showing that animals are dis
turbed just before a shock. So well
known is this fact that for a while after
the great Cnlabrian earthquake , the
neighing of a hpr.se or the cackling of a
gooio was suillcieut to send the terrified
inhabitants flying from their homos in
expectation of another shock. Ponies
have been known to prance about their
stalls , pheasants to scream , and frogs to
cease croaking a short time before ttio
earth trembled. The Japanese say that
moles show their agitation by burrow
ing.Birds
Birds hulo their heads beneath their
wings , and act in an unubual manner.
Sometimes immense Hocks of sea birds
ily inland , as if alarmed by an oceanic
disturbance. Bcforo the shock of 1885
in Chili , all the dogs are said to have
escaped from the city of Talcahuano.
The most probable explanation of this
apparent foreknowledge is that animals
are sensitive to thoslighttremors which
precede nearly all earthquakes. More
over , in volcanic districts poisonous
gasses sometimes emanate from the
ground , and animals are supposed to bo
unpleasantly affected by them.
