time the market wns strong. The strength
that wns developed was largely duo to local
causes. Out of 015 cars of winter wheat ro-
culvcd nt this point only eight graded No. 2 ,
and out of fifty-seven cars of spring
wheat only four passed into the contract
grade. Tliu total amount of poor grading of
non-arrivals discourages short selling and
Imparts courage to the bulls , liutchlnson
was the largest buyer , but there were also
good order s in the hands of tnuny commis

corded the .market wns general. Storms in

In Minneapolis nnd ut. Louis were quoted as
advising their Chicago correspondents
that the demand for Hour had

curtailment In the milling production. The
Hour trade wns reported dull ut other places
as well , nnd the boars seized upon thlt point
as ono of grant ImporUnco , emphasized by
the diminished foreign inquiry for cash
wheat nnd the weak tone of old world nd-
vices generally. The local Inquiry for cash
wheat wnssmall , but the end of thu deal is
looked upon us dull aud featureless. Active
speculation Is still largely confined to De

The action to-day of traders In'corn re-
vonled the fact that they are still susceptible
to the possibility of some damage resulting
to the crop from frosts , which are continuing
to hang nround. There wus nu active trad
ing at the opening ut uu improvement of
about > fo on the previous day's closing price
and u further udvunco of from } { c to % o
took place before the ofTorlnirs became heavy
enough to check the advance. When May

sales , nnd from that point a reaction took
place which carried the price back to 83Ji

reached 32c , was forced ba.clcto8'Jc , some
animated trading accompanying the reduc

Oats were quiet but stronger , with (3) ( ) '

estimate and the advance in corn started
some operators to buying who were sellers
yesterday. Trading was chiefly in May with

were libernl. though less than the preceding
day. A low cars of No. 3 to go in store sold
at lOije , and cash trading was chiefly by
sample.
In provisions the day's business wus auito
moderate. General speculation was under
on average , and usldo from a revival of a
little interest in October there wus nothing
unusual. In October porlt there was more
doing than of luto. J'ho Anglo-Ameri
can Packing company were cred

shorts covered their trades , makinir the
trim ruction aggregate several thousand bar
rels. Prices for the sumo wore irregular ,
fluctuating between ? 11.1U@11.60 , ami clos

witnessed rather favored the bear side.

To-day's trade lu cattle was slow and

operators wanted , and they accordingly
bought very sparingly. There were oiau
pretty fair native beeves on sale In fact ,
the greater suuro of tUu beovus hero were
natives. The sales ranged from W GO to tJ 85
for native * . The oftoriugi of butchers' btook
were very light , and there was fiaruly
enough doing to mnko a market The trade

UOO lu the Ijouisianit State
Lottery.
In a neat little brick cottage , ift No.
! ! 107 LtiStUlo street , there resides the
happiest and snuggest little family of
Germans that could bo found In many a
mile's hunt. It Is the home of Charles
Moinhardt , his wife and a little thrco-
yoar-old daughter. Only a few months
ago , Mr. Moinhardt was in tolerably
fail * circumstances , now he is what maybe
bo called the Jay Gould of West St.
Louis. In short , at the last drawing of
thp Louisiana State Lottery ho hold a
tenth part of the n umber 87SM , which
dio'.v the oipital prize of $ : i)0,000. ( ) A
Star-SayingH report or called at the rcsi-
denco of Mr. Moinhardt this morning.
Mr. Meinhnrdt was out on some succu-
lalion , hut his wife met the reporter
and said : "Wo are now a very happy
family. Wo won $10,00 ! ( ) and got o very
cent of It a few days ago. It was a very
lucky thing , and"wo have only been
playing the lottery for about four
months. I have been buying all the
tickets , but I got them uiiiier my hus-
bnnd' name , f bought this lucky ono
and took $2 out of his pocket to buy it ,
and I'm glad I did it now. My husband
will continue to carry papers , but ho
will-in vest in real estate to a consider
able extent. I would like to BOO some
body else do as well as wo. Wo Intend
to play a little every now and thon. "
Two other gentlemen of this city hold
onc-twontioth tickets and each drew
$15,000 , ore through the Lafayette and
the other through the Fourth National
Bank. Besides the above luck of St.
Louisans , there arrs any number of people
ple holding numbers for smaller prices.
The heaviest winners at this drawing
wore all in pretty fair circumstances ,
and now that they Imvo acquired bud-
don wealth , intend to have a pretty
good time out of it. Two of thorn are
investing in real estate in the West
End. Mr. Moinhardt. . , while still carry
ing papers , is contemplating a trip to
the old country with his family. [ St.
