THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , SEPTEMBER 11 , 1889. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Moro Activity and Higher Values In th Wheat Pit THE COMPETITION OF RUSSIA. English TrntloM T/ilnkTIiny / Will tlo Inucricn'lcnt of Aiiirloan Siii- pticH Till January Cum Moro Active Provisions Nervous. CHICAGO PIIODUCE CIIICAOO , Sopt. 10. [ Spoclnl Tclocram to TUB Ur.E.l There was ft rovcrsal of the ipcculatlvo sentiment among \vlioat traders to-day which was productive of inoro activity In business and a higher range of values. Mutual Inquiries were frequent among sculp- era ns to the c.vuso of the improvement and n ( -onornl Ignorance was prfcsscd of any outside reason lor higher prices , There were several Items of news in circulation , however , which might account for the shorts desiring to cover. Among tlioso was cabled a paragraph from a leading London newspa per to the effect that European dollclcnclcs would require 18,000,000 , bushels to irmko thorn good , but before going further another feature of the European trade may bo hero introduced. A gentleman connected with one of the loading houses on 'Change , which has extensive English connections , has Just returned from abroad and says that at pres ent the wants of England nro being supplied by Russia at lower prices than are prevailing hero , that English millers have learned to make good Hour from u mixture of Russian nnd Indian wheat , nnd that while traders there nru not boars at the prices they nro paying for wheat the y think they will bo practically Independent of American supplies until January next. This , of course , represents only an Individual opinion , but Is the Result of inquiries by close observing Chicago merchants. Inspection returns tire showing the wheat arriving here as going from bad to worse , as oui of ! J3j cars ro- ci'ivcd hero to-day only seven cars inspected No. 2 , and in store hero now there are only 603,000 , bushels nil told of contract wheut , while nt the same time last year three times ns much In store did not deter a certain gentleman from running a corner. There was a report of about % at one time on a rumor that the govern ment , report to bo published this afternoon would show a decrease of 3 points in the condition of spring wheat. The ganoral crowd , however , was not prepared to believe In any lenliing out of advance intelligence. Thu course of prices was almost steadily upward from the start. December opened at 77J c , which was } c over the previous dav's closlnc quotations , advanced to TSJ c , declined to 77Jfc [ , again up to 78c , oft to 781 0 , then up to 7 ! > KC ai"l closed at 781 0. September was depressed by free offerings early but Inter recovered tone and closed steady at ( % v. Corn was more active and firmer , partly in spmpnthy with wheat , partly owing to 100 cars less being received tiero than was cal ciliated on and perhaps in a greater measure to ttic firm hold which prominent operators appear tn have on September. Trading was without special feature , being largely of the Bculpiug character. Fluctuations were nar row , but the undcr-currcntof the speculative feeling fuvored the bull side. The enormous shipments from this port is HUftioioni indica tion of tno views of consumers regarding present values. Prices had a narrow range. October selling from ! ) . ' % c to ! Mc , closing at , and May from US c to 35i o , closing at Oats exhibited more life than for several days previously , ruling fairly active and II rm to % @lic higher , under moderate buying. The receipts wore below the estimate , nnd small postings are expected for to-morrow , and with moderato strength elsewhere. There was a fair buving on account of shorts. May unproved # 0 to 23J ( $ * Wc , with December comber touching 20 . Some desire was showing to change September into October , the difference being about % @ } { c. No. 2 white for September was stronger at81c ; No. 2 regular sold at lUh@LOc. ! No. 'J regu lar sold ut llirf@tll ) > lc. The provision trade is still nervous. The underlying sentiment Is unquestionably bear ish , and there is evidently more disposition to favor tlio short than the long side. The January product showed some strength to-day umler the buying of pork by brokers at times , credited with representing Armour , but for this year's deliveries the level was lower than that of yesterday. In October pork , which is governed by unnatural causes , the move ment was very irregular. It opened strong , was sold off 75e during the excitement oc casioned by the free offerings by Cudatiy , and was afterwards taken In charge by Hutchlnson and boomed. It closed nt a net decline of 15c , or at $1MO. The day's range for the same artlclo was $10.85 11.00. Sep tember pork was nominally the same as Oc tober. Lard for September and October da- clmod 21 } c. It rested nt S3.02K for the first named month and $ - > .87K for October. Oc tober lard sold nt $ j.8QrC5.0 ( . September short ribs were easier , selling off 7 | o nnd closing at &UU } < | . October short ribs closed at fj.00 , or So higher than yesterday. CHICAGO LIVB STOCK. CniOAao , Sept. 10. | Special Telegram to THE BEK.I CATTLE There was nothing particularly now in the trade this morning. The run was only moderate , inudo up of C.OOO natives , 8,000 Texans nnd 3,000 rangers : but on account of the big run yesterday when near delivery buyers filled their or ders to the full limit business to-day ruled rather slow , with n weak range of prices at the decljno of 10@15o noted yesterday on all ' classes , except , perhaps , a few loads of fancy export steers. Natives , Texans and rangers are 10@lfic lower than last week , and all are liable to rule slow at a decline for the remainder of the week , as the receipts in two davs show an increase of 7,000 over the same time lust week , native butchers' stock grades soiling down to a lower mark. Stockcrs and feeders are also down to the low water mark. Choice to extra beeves , $ -1.30@4.G5 ; medium to coed L steers , 1 SO to 1500 TOM. , $ l.80@4.40 ; 1200 to 1350 IbB , , * 3WJ4.10i ( ? A few urgent shipping orders were tilled ut a slight advance , but In a general way there was little or no change as compared with yetorday. Puckers did but little buyintr' until late in the day and went In largely nt t3,80@3.P5 , occasionally going up to fl.OO. NEWT YOHK , Sept. 10. | Special Telegram to TUB HKE.J STOCKS The action in stocks on Monday was not such as to clearly deflno the forces at work or give much 'basis for future action , The west , as represented by Chicago , is utandlng by the Grangers , and dUpatohos predict a 10-pomt further ud- vance in the favorites , the chief of which ap pears to bo Burlington. The market opened with prices irregular and London buying Reading , The changes from last night were mostly losses , but extended only from } 4 to } $ per cent generally. With Jersey Central , Louisville aud Luekawiuma each off 'c , the only reully active stocks were Heading , St. Paul , Louisville & Niulivillo and Lacka- , wanna. While there was a moderate business in Erie , Missouri Pacific , Atchison and Bur lington , the rest of the market was quiet to dull. The woauuess of the opening con tinued during tbo early trading , and further fractional losses were sustained , which brought the net loss in Jersey Central , Louis ville & Nashvlllo and Manitoba up to 1 per ccut , with other active shares following. Hoivllnpt was the ono strong spot tn the list , and nt 43 It w.ii ? per cent higher than lust evening , though it afterward retired to tlio oncnmg prices. During the hour to 13 o'clock there was achango of sentiment nnd the buy ing became moro general throughout the list. The recovery was barnly enough to again reach last night's figures , and the market wai dull. The slight recovery la stocks before noon did not hold , and rcaljz- ing was the order of the day. Declines wo.ro goncrnt , but not sharp. Northern 1'aclflo touched 75J , Burlington 103'tf ' , Hook Island 107K nnd St , Paul 73. Thcro wus a slight rally from bottom prices before the uloso , but the INt showed net losses in standard stocks of # to 1J { per cent , with Grangers generally X to off for the day. The belief s that St. Paul common will again bo passed o-morrow , but preferred may pay bettor linn before. The opinion Is pretty general nt the close that the reaction Is over aud the advance will now bo resumed. The most conspicuous losses for the day were 3 per cent In Jersey Central , l } in Manitoba nnd . .ackawannn , J In Louisville and } i In load rusU.
