The persistent attempts to uiako ancient ' craft Masonry In tbo state of Nebraska sub servient to the illegal so-called southern Jurisdiction Scottish rite Masonry , under the command of Albert Pike , the would-bo imperial dictator , to all Masons of nil rites , docs not require the gift of a prophet to foro- loll the nature of the awakening that will result from such coercion If it continues much longer. Already qulto enough has transpired In this jurisdiction to servo as a solemn warning to all loyal ancient craft Masons , und if our present grand ledge sys tem is to bo maintained such attempts must be met by all lawful rcsistnnco. Pause brethren , und carefully consider the methods now being pursued by the adherents of Pike , under the cloak of preserving pcaco and harmony among the craft , and ask your selves its meaning. Pcaco and harmony have always prevailed in this jurisdiction among the craft ot Sym bolic Masonry up to the issuing of tbo so- called edict No. 1 , by John J. Mercer , grand master of Masons m the state of Nebraska , wherein ho attempts to commit. In his official capacity , In dellance of the , expressed will of our grand ledge , the loyal Master Masons of this grand jurisdiction , who have abso lutely no knowledge of the matter whatever , either by virtue of mem bership or through Investigation , to a recognition of an illegitimate so-called southern jurisdiction of Scottish rite Ma sonry , presided over by Albert Plko , an ox. rebel general ot the defunct , so-called Southern Confederacy a man who has for feited hia claims to American citizenship und violated every obligation ho has takun In Masonry , Let us further dissect this edict , la our opinion , it ill becomes tbo grand master of this jurisdiction , who now holds tlio highest office within our gift , by our voluo and voles , to publicly declare and make known to the world thut wo nro false , desipninp frrgora , evilly disposed and ill-informed Master Masons. Now , brethren , we submit to you that no man can with impunity unjustly dis parage the character of his fellow-citizens in this manner without becoming amenable to the laws enacted far the protection of all citizens. Wnat kind of Masonry Is this ! wo ask. Not ancient craft Masonry , brethren. It may bo I'lito's Masonry ; but wo , as loyal ancient craft Masons , most emphatically de clare to the world that this is not in accord ance with the teachings of ancient craft Masonry , There Is nothing In the constitu tion and ancient charges that inculcates such a doctrine ; ono would search the three great lights of Masonry la vain to llnd one syllable that would warrant HCbh a course ; nor do the rituals and secret work adopted by our grand loUi < contain anything that teaches a limn to villlfy his brethren , and only ho could so debase ) himself wbo would put on the garb of Masonry and prostitute his high prerogatives In a ilnal effort to sustain and propagata a particular Scottish rite which u it relic of the rebellion , notrecog- ulied by our grand ledge as being Masonlo or as being a part of ancient craft Masonry , bynuch infamous declaration * . Nay , more not nutistlcd with publishing such senti ments In the dully papers from Maine to Texas , he requires , by edict No. 1 , that all loyal ancient craft Masons under his juris diction ahull bo humllated by reading such entlments at three rcgnlar consecutive meetings and the same shall be posted In the mnto-roomof each lodgu In the jurisdiction And this , brethren , Is to conduce to peace and harmony 1 What nonseusol What more could bo Bald or douo to create dissensions 1515 STREET. Tliure , within its sacred precincts , the subject of Scottish rite Masonry never entered until forced there by edict No. 1. of Grand Master John J. Morcorand strange' to say , notwithstanding it was a firebrand to throw into that lodge , on account of the very peculiar combination that existed regarding membership in the different Scottish rite jurisdictions , the edict was complied with in every particular without remarks or com ment , showing that , the government of the ledge was what it should bo. Brethren why was that charter arrestodl Because , forsooth , the majority of the mem bers of that lodge did not and would never pay homage and tribute to Albert Pike , of the so-called Illegal southern jurisdiction of Scottish rlto Masonry ; nothing , inoro or loss , than the issuance of those resolutions which are not only backed by the resolutions of our grand ledge at ittt lust communication , but by every Masonic jurist in the world , and which contain nothing but what every Inyal ancient craft Muson should endorse. It was tlio true sontlmonts of that lodge , expressed by force of the edict. AVhon wo" became Master Masons wo obligated ourselves to no act , or to i bcdlonco to any act , that would curtail our liberty of conscience or would bind us hand and foot to despotism , Intolerance , or the machina tions of any man , even though ho bo for the tlrno a grand muster , or oven to a body of men , who through ignorance , pernicious In- flupncca , or a blind following may enact laws tbat would prevent the free ozcrciso of our mental powers uud intelligence In everything within what la prescribed by the laws of our country. Brother Master Maions , tno question Is , what is the true Inwardness of this whole business ! Albert Pike , commander of the so-culled illegal nouthcrn jurisdiction of Scottish rite manonary , claims the adherent right to control nnd govern nil degrees in Masonary. He prints in full and sells the ritual for the first three degrees and where ho is allowed to do so , confers the first thrcu degrees In connection with his Scottish rlta system. Where grand lodges exist , to "avoid prcdjudlco and quarrels ho refrains from the oxurclso of his powers over the llrst three degrees. " but his secret constitu tion * Instruct his followers to thrust them selves forward in ofllclal positions in the subordinate and grand lodges of ancient craft M use miry anil thus control the first three degrees of symbolic Maaonnry , which Is equivalent to conferring the degrees themselves. Ou this basis , whcra is ancient craft Maaonnryl So far as Nebraska Is con sented , for the tlma at least , It is located in bosom of the iltcgilimato so-called southern jurisdiction ol Scottish rite Masouary with Albert I'iUo for lifo , after wiioin his success ors ad vitom would bo imperial dictators over all forms of Masonary. To counteract such a deep laid scheme will demand the most careful anil deliberate consideration on the part otnll loyal ancient craft Masons. Brethren , how rould wo enjoy u Masonlo monarchy in this republican form of tree government ! Wo say never ! Wo were uiado Masons because wo were men , and wo all determined tomnlnUln Musonryand man hood by lawful resistance to usurpation nnd outruge. To concede anything different from tliia would bo subversion of freedom of consclenco , liberal Institutions nnd frco government , and an admission thut Masonry was tyrnmcal , oppicsstvo and unlit for free and enlightened men. The visit of the Supreme chief has had the effect of increasing the zeal nnd interest of the mem bers and strengthening tbo bonds of fellow- snip. Wednesday morning the supreme chief left for Denver , there to establish a Grand Castlofor the state of Colorado. The Knights of the Golden Eagle , while it is an order comparatively now to the soil of Nebraska , it is growing rapliUv both In popularity and membership and bids fair to equal if not sur pass ita sister organizations in this city. In the east the order is very strong and con stantly obtaining now acquisitions. The primary objects of the order are to promote tbo principles of true bouovolenco , by asso ciating the members together for the pur- posd of mutual relief against the trials and difficulties of attending sickness , ' distress and death , so far as they may bo mitigated by sympathy und pecuniary assistance ; to care for and protect the widows and or phans , to assist those out of employment , to encourage each other in business , to nn.ol- ioratotho condition of humanity in every possible manner , to stimulate moral and mental culture , and by wholesome precepts , fraternal counsel and social Intercourse to elevate the mcmborahipandadvunco towards a higher and nobler lifo , and for the inculca tion and dissemination of the principles of , benevolence und charity us taught by the order. The age of members is from twenty years up wards. Each castle is permitted to determine the maximum ago of applicants for membership. The order con tains umong Its membership the natives of different climes and men speaking many tongues. The great majority are young men from the various walks in Ufa , from the trades as well as the professions , and phy sicians , clergyman , mechanics , nnd artisans generally , with clerks nnd merchants , Join hand In hand In advancing the principles of n common brotherhood. The constant aim is to promote the mutual pleasure and welfare of the members. The meetings are holu for the transaction of busit ness of a moral , benevolent and charitable character. No other Institution Is butter calculated to promote the well-being of a man and his happiness. It spelts to elevate mankind generally. There ore social and military features which will assist greatly In popularizing this fraternal organization in Omaha and its tributary territory. ,1. O. O. P. A serious question presents itself to the friends of the representatives to the Robokah convention at Columbus in September next as to how the expenses of the delegates will bo paid. So far as wa are informed , says the Manchester Union , no provision 1ms been nmilo for the expenses nor are there any funds in the grand lodga to meet the demand. In deed , it is not clear that the money of tha grand body could bo legitimately appropri ated for that purpose wore tha grand oftlcors or members HO disposed. Jeither ; can It bo reasonably expected tbat the representatives should bear the burdens thomsolvos. They will not attend simply for the honor or for personal pleasure. They go out in the inter est of the branch of Uioorder which they will represent. They have no personal obliga tions or duties to perform. They are the ser vants of these who elected thorn to the posi tion , and should not bo expected to pay tboir faro and hotel bills. When our state conveution was hold at Concord , the body should' have wUely arranged to meet at least inch necessary expenses as may occur.
