Tun UDE.I Thcro was n little flurry
In September wheat to day that caused
otno excitement for a few minutes , but
nsido from that the ninrkot ruled dull and
uninteresting It was sadly In need of
"elixlration , " to use a newly coined phrase
descriptive of Urown-Scquard's rejuvenating
process. StatUtlcs nnd most of the now *
hud n bullish flavor , but there wait no snap
to speculative Inquiry nnd values didn't
appreciate. Indeed , the market scorned to
have an undertone of heaviness , four out
of five of the scalpers were bearish , but
their influence Just now is not Important
Tlioir operations sometimes mnko a change
of } o of * such n matter , but those trivial
variations In quotations possess no signifi
cance. The news that was most Industriously
circulated for speculative effect was a dis
patch from Russia via Now York
that thn Russian crop would bo
on nvcrnRQ ono and that It would exceed the
recent estimates. This report had not much
influence In viovv of the recent otllclal and
seml-ofllcliU utterances to the contrary , but
it was used ns a club , and tlioro was consid
erable ) selling on the strength of It by Gcorgo
Smith , Cudahy and others. English cables
were flatly contradictory , but those usually
regarded as the most reliable represented
the weather as unsettled and the inarnot
firm on that account and small offerings.
New York operators had it that the foreign
market was depressed mid lower on clearing
weather and expected heavy shipments of
American wheat. Not strictly in harmony
with the bear information came well authen
ticated reports that ocean freight room was
in demand at the ncaboard for "wheat to ar
rive. " ' In addition it was learned that now
business to the extent of nine boat loads hail
been worked in Now York. Tim amount
on passage dccrcasod 830,000 bushels. This
was a bull item of no consequence. The
northwest continues to keep tno mails and
wires laden with bearish advice and opinion ,
but as yet the statistics do not particularly
favor that sldo. Receipts of spring wheat
are not coming up to expectations , but It
might bo well for those who are disap
pointed because the whole spring wheat crop
has not yet been shipped in from tno country
to remember that a year ago yesterday n
hard frost destroyed millions of bushels of
wheat in the northwest. This year the crop
has been saved , but the date is nevertheless
very early to go Into niouniinp over the fail
ure of the crop to como to the front. Ttore
were r.uns throughout Montana , the Dalto-
tas and Northern Minnesota yester
day and last night , and a cold
wave of considerable severity is fol
lowing. The approaching cold wave
caused a small-sized scare in corn , but trade
is so lethargic that actual frost in the corn
country would hardly "wake 'em up , " seem-
Inply. The Impending low temperature had
no effect on wheat , however. December
opened at 78'fjC , advanced sparuiRly to 78J <
© 7Sc , and sola off to 7T77Xc. From
that point there was u rally to 77 c , and
that was the point at which a largo proportion
tion of tno business of the day was done.
The market clung to % < " . with a sort of tor
pid tenacity. Toward the close , however ,
the Increased offerings produced a weak
fooling and the price cot to 77c , where it
rested at the close. August opened at 77 } c ,
ranged at 77@77J.fa nnd closed at 77 * < b.
September opened at 77) ) , which was } e
advance over yesterday's lust price , and was
led up to 7J < o , with only a few sales. The
prlco subsequently worked back to 7GJ c
and closed at 70j4@70Xc. As compared
with yesterday , near months are Just a shade
better and Into futures } { c lower.
The usual. featureless uiid dull corn mar
ket was not deprived of its recent character
istics. The foreign markets wcro steady to
firm , and export inquiry at the seaboard was
good nnd shippers hero wcro frco buyers.
The clearances from Atlantic ports wore
small , and New Orleans only figured for a
shipment of 10,000 bushels. The wcnther
throughout the corn belt was favorable for
the growth of grain , but colder weather was
threatened from the extreme northwest.
Prices underwent but little change. Septem
ber , the active month , being confined to u
range of loss thun &c. It opened at 85 } @
85c , sold down to SSk'c and closed at & } ) , ( &
Oats were dull within % e range , ruling
nearly steady. Heceipts were less than ex
pected , though they proved liberal. In the
speculative market thuro was little desire to
trade , with some business in No. 3 white
oats for this and next month. No. 3 August
weaker nt31@24Ko and September nt i& c.
May oats were offered moderately at 24o and
September stood near SOJ c. with August at
n shade discount. No. 3 oats to go jto store
Bold chiefly at 'J0'b'c.
In provisions the day's developments
showed little o'r no chungo in the situation.
Pork and lard exhibited a trifle more
strength , but for short ribs prices receded tea
a lower point than yesterday under unex
pected selling. Offerings of short ribs ex
ceeded the demand as u ruin , and ttio char
acter of the realizing rather indicated liqui
dation upon the part of some of the tired
holders. The trading generally was com
paratively slow and the buying witnessed
presented no special feature. The day's
uctuul changes In prices show u decline of Do
on September and October short ribs and an
advance of 2f@5o on the saino deliveries of
lard and BCJTJyO on all pork futures. Janu-
nry lard uud short ribs closed unchanged.
