THE OMAHA DAILY BEK : TUESDAY AUGUST 20. 1889. 3 THE SPECULATIVE MARKER , A Dull Day and Narrow Fluctua tions in the Wheat Pit. CORN PRESSED FOR SALE. Oata rumuo n. Ciuoxno , August 10. fSpoclnl Tolograra lo TIIR llp.n.l This WitB n ( lull day In whoat. Trade In futures was not largo and prlco fluctuations were within narrow limits. In the cnsh branch of trade no especial ncttvlty was noticeable. December \vhcat opened at 77J < o , languidly moved to 7do , sold off % o nnd for a couple of hours stayed clone around 77 0. When the vlslblu supply figures were posted the market settled to 77 fo. At that point it mot with stiff support nud rallied to 77J c , where It remained almost immovable fcr the romalndcr of the session , closing , however , at 78c. Dull ns the marlcot was , and heavy us it nsomcd to bo , thoru was un questionably consldorabla wheat wanted. Offerings were limited and any effort to pur chase n big line would almost certainly hnvo put the price up. Possibly It the blp be.irs had resorted to their old time slugKin tac tics tbo market might have broken , but none of them scorned disposed to resort to aggres sive tactics nud values were not subjected to n strain cither way. Nothing occurred to disturb the quint of the proceedings. Au gust wheiit opbnod at 77J c , ranged down to 77o nnd cloned at 77c bid. Sop- to mbcr aliened at sold off to 7G > fo ana closed nt 70X * The closings record a small decline ns compared with Saturday. Local spcculativo sentiment Is bearish , though whout has a good many strong friends among tno conscr- vatlvo class. The unwisdom of any artificial attempt to boom tbo mar hut is felt very gen erally. and the desirability of a free export inovomoutuuriiiK the front end of the crop year is also very fully appreciated. With this feeling so strong everybody seems to rather look for a somewhat lower run go of prices , duo to line woathcr , an anticipated blgearly rush of spring wheat , and the un disguised dcslro of the moniod und milling interests of the nortnwcst to sea the new crop year begin with wheat selling cheap. The continuance of a liberal foreign demand for spot grain may Interfere to some extent with this programme , but good weather is ul- ready stimulating the movement of winter wheat , and a prolongation of the satno sort of foundations may result in a piling uti of sup plies that will encourage short soiling. Up to the present time short selling hus not been indulged in with customary freedom , nnd the market is an even keel with no huge Interest dominating either way. The corn inutket opened with considerable pressure to soil , which was fairly mot by shorts who were willing to accept their prolits. Trading after the first few minutes was quiet nnd dull and at Sou for September. There wns suftlcicnt demand to absorb offer ing and causa n slight reaction. Warmer weather nnd heavy receipts tended to create the weakness observable , and the increase of the visible supply " s uuother weak feature. 'Jho closing prices were 35jfce for August and 35 (33.1 ( 0 for September , being from % c to j c under those of Saturday. Oats pursued a quiet and uneventful course , with price changes narrow and un important , tending to easiness. The liberal Increase in the visible supply of nearly a million bushels exerted no appreciable influ ence , ns had been expected , but thcro was little buying support , ns the receipts and es timates were both largo. The weather was favorable and corn tended to easiness. May was saleable at SiJ : < c. a } { c decline , with September nt 20 @iO.J/c. ! No. 2 white for August sold fairly well at 3-0/c and No. September was offered at 24e. No. 3 regular eolu at 2 < y c@20tfc , with samples m largo supply. Provisions evidently failed to strike rock bottom In their break of last week. They opened this morning with u little showing of strength , but bcfoio operators had fairly gathered in the pit the old weakness us- bumcd control. In the trading that followed the bear side hud the call and prices speedily started in n downward direction. Hogs were in moderate supply in Chicago , but in the west the dav's marketing was 7.0JO head larger than on the corresponding duj a year ago. In the product speculation was a little slow , and almost wholly on local account. For cash delivery , however , sales indicated something of An Improvement in the dc niand. Lard was taken by shippers nt t0.1'J ( ( ! .l7K , UHb green hams at 7 > < fc , 10-lb sweet pickled limns at 1)5 ) 0 und short ribs at $5.10.
