There is no doubt that St. AugusMno
is the oldest settlement of white men in
this country , but Santa Fo is called the
oldust city because St was a city before
the coming of the wbito man , says the
Pittsburg dispatch. When the Span
iards first made their way to the heart
of this country , about 1042 , the site of
the present city ot Santa Fo was occu
pied by a prosperous and populous
pueblo ( town ) of the Indians. The ex
pedition of Alvar Nunez penetrated
Wow Mexico in 167 ! ! , that of'Marco do
Ni'/.a followed in 1539 , but Corouado is
believed to have boon the Hi'st to push
his journey as far as the SantaFo town ,
Severn ! oilier expeditions , more or less
unsuccessful , entered the country , en
deavoring to establish mi&siong among
the natives. These explorers uniform
ly reported that these people wore
considerably advanced in civilisa
tion , that they manufactured
clothing ' and weapons , built
houses of stone several Stories
high , and cultivated the soil with dili
gence and workpd milieu , .of gold and
silver. It was not until about 1500 that
any permanent Spanish settlements
mude. The Spaniards then literally
took possession of the country , built
towns , laid out roads , increased the
commerce of the country nud osueeially
increased the yield of the irtine by ex
pensive workings. They literally on-

Spaniards made Santa Fo the capital of
their now dominions , which they called
Now Moxioo. But the Indians rebelled

country as far south as El Paso del
Norto. After several attempts the
Spaniards regained possession of the

United States under General Kearney ,

Texas captured the city March 10 , 1802 ,
but were forced to evacuate it on April
8 following.
