THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , AUGUST 14 , 1889 J11E SPECULATIVE BARKIS , Oaoh Wheat Showa Up With a Blight Advance. FIRMNESS IN THE CORN PIT. A Continuation of Monday's Weak ness in t'rovlolons Cattle Ilusl- I ness Fnlrly Active nnd I'rloca Steady General Quotations. CHICAGO I'UOnUCfi MAUKET9. CHICAGO , August 13. fSpocIal Telegram to THE UEE.I Tbo cash end of the wheat mar- lict crept up n little and lone futures were stonily ot about yesterday's closing Htrures. Speculative trading was not unusually Im portant In the extent , magnitude or signifi cance of operations , and there was a lull In the shipping dcmnnd , though car lot stuff was In active request ai bolter prices. The movement of winter wheat out of farmers' hands seems to bo letting up , at least the prospect of Increased receipts nt western points has been abandoned , for tha present at least , Uccolpts mo appatcntly on the wane , and , nt a period wncn grain In west ern warehouses is unusually piling up nt a rnpld rate , the novel spectacle Is presented of stocks actually In process ot reduction at two principal points of accumulation In the west Chicago und St. Louts. It is true , T. M. Uaxtor says , that the country Is long BOO.000,000 bushels of cash wheat , which Is certain to coma out on the ndvanco , but the country Is Just ns cer tainly not going wild to empty Its private Rrnnorlcs at current prices. That is what U rendering shorts less certain of their posi tion nnd what Is developing the steady-going , slow-paced bullish feeling among the con servative class of grain merchants and spec ulators as well. The first quotation on De cember was 7c. ! Fluctuations for a titno were within the limits of 77c high ana 77J o for low. The market then advanced to 7Sc , and for an hour or moro the prlco did not vary from that figure J c. Toward the last it went down rather suddenly to 77c , but rallied with a snap to 77c and closed thoro. August opened at 7GJ c , sold u ; > to 77o and closed nt 70 } c. September started In at 7GJi$75iJ ( < Jc , sold off to 75o and UD to 7B e , closing at "Sj o. As compared with yesterday's flnnl range this is } { c better for August , } { e oft for September and } o lower for December. Although the receipts of corn were nearly ICO cars over yesterday's estimates , the mar ket ruled firm and trading was fairly active compared with the recent volume. A prom inent operator was a free buyer of Septem ber corn at SSo ana up to 35J c offerings were light. August was likewise In goad demand nnd rather difficult to buy without raising the price. Ueports of heavy rams and damaging hail storms from the south west , which , together with the brisk demand for August and cash corn , were perhaps the chief causes of higftor prices. September opened at 35e , but under a eood demand and a scarcity of offerings soon advanced to 85Xo nnd closed at 85 > sc , 'jeing X ° more than it closed ut yesterday. Oats were moderately active and firm to H@ff higher. The posted receipts were loss than expected , nnd with corn higher und estimated arrivals of oats for tomorrow row only 25S cars , the shorts vcro disposed to cover. At the same tiino there was no pressure to sell , as oats are certainly low In price. September improved to 20 > c. later ruling slightly easier , nnd May was in fair demand up to 2424Ku. No. 2 white oats for August sold ut 24 ( < j24 > ; fc , and No. 2 oats to go to store were quiet at 20 > fc. In provisions yesterday's weakness was continued. In pork and short ribs particu larly trade was almost demoralized. Lard , under rather free buying agalnby | S. V. White & Co. , held up better than its compan ion articles , although it also failed to with stand the depressed fooling dominant. The long interest acted as though tired out , and from the start the market was really over supplied with'property , a good share of which came from disappointed outside holders. Trading , however , was quite active , nnd for the first day In some time was well filled with operators. The best prices quoted were obtained all around at or just following the opening of 'change , and the lowest late in the session13ased on yesterday's closings the declines actually suffered amounted to i September and October pork. 5u on January pork-and-uhort ribs , lOc on Septem ber und October short ribs and 7X@10c on the several deliveries of lard. Business was fairly uctivo and prices steady to strong on best shipping and export steers and a better de mand /or medium and common. Prime cattle were scarce and sold out quick , consequently quently buyers who failed to got in early had to fall back on other grades and pay a shade more money than yesterday. Native butchers' stock wus iu better demand on account of the light run of trains , the number reaching only about 1,000 head , but the light supply had no stimulating effect on Texans , ns there were plenty in sight at St. Louis and Kansas City that will ho hero to morrow and next day. Tliorcs were eighty loads of range cattle on the market , aod best stcors made equally as good prices aa yesterday. The stocker and feeder trade was rather slow , with a larger number on the market than expected. Veal calves were in liberal supply and selling about the same ns last week. There was a demand for all good grades of cattle of whatever kind , whether beeves , feedorsor butchers' stuff , All such cattle sold readily at steady to strong prices , but when it came to the commoner grades lie strength was visible , still the market could be quoted no lower. Native cattle , and those that were desirable , too. formed the bulk ol to-day's offerings , which was Just the reverse verso of the case yesterday. The market on beeves was active , und the best cattle changed hands in good season. The prices paid for natives ranged from t3.25b3.80 foi weights under 1200 Ibs , while 120C to 1500 Ib beeves sold at i.00@4.85.
