CHICAGO. August 7. [ Special Telegram to
TIIB BEE.I The general features of the
wheat market were unchnnRcd from the
prominent characteristic * of the previous
day. Dullness , Inactivity and narrow fluc
tuations again prevailed , with n downward
tendency to prices. Apart from the news of
the da.v there Is nn underlying feeling domi
nating the minds of speculators that wo
bavo an abundant crop of excellent wheat ,
more than sufllclont for our own wants , and
with enough surplus to satisfy nil possible
demands upon us from abroad. Fluctuations
in the active month December were from
78 } o at the opening to 78 < < o within un hour
thereafter , and the ups and downs from that
time to the close were within a 40 range.
The clo mg tirlco was 78K@ S.7jfc , which Is
from % o to X ° lower , , than the resting
figure. The news afforded by early bulletins
was In favor of the bears. The principal
factor was the collapse of the wet weiilhor
boom In England , the weather being re
ported Improving to-day , and the Liverpool
market In consequence was quoted J < @ld
lower , Late private cables yesterday fore
shadowed bear dispatches to the board this
morning , but c confirmation of the fact was
the caujo of tbo weak opening. Beerbohm
supplied additional comfort to the boars by
reporting an Increase of 1R92,000 bushels in
the quantity on ocean passage , which , however -
over , exceeded by 512,000 the computation of
thp board of trndo correspondent , who fig
ured the Increase at 880,000 , but even n
smaller quantity was a fair bear argument.
Everything was lovely around the harvest
flo'lds of the spring wheat region , nnd the
wtather in the southwest was likewise favor
able to the threshing of winter wheat. Items
from which the bulls drew comfort were
not wanting In force when sup
ported by the abiding faith which
Is found lu hopeful breasts. There were
dispatches shown on the floor , said to bo
from reliable partioswhlch reported damage
of ji serious nature troni frost curly in the
week extending fifty miles nouth of the Can
adian lino. Exporters were buying moder-
nto quantities In New York to-day , illtecn
boat loads bolng reported taken , and tUafo
was good Inquiry for cash wheat hero nnd
for vessel room , although the actual charters
reported were only UO.OUO bushels. The fore
going appears to furnish a fair amount ot
encouragement to the bulls , but , us indicated
above , the bears secured the substantial ad
vantage of u decline of ? c lu the uctivo fut
ures , which is the view of the surroucdingrs
most acceptable to the majority to-day.
The corn market was again quiet In the
way of speculation , and in the shipping ao-
innnd early there was much heaviness , and
tbo market sold off some , but part of this
was subsequently recovered. At the close
seller September was about c lower than
it closed yesterday. The market was nar
row , however , and the range covered by the
fluctuations was only about % c. At the
close the fooling was barely steady.
Oats lapsed into quietude , with the regular
market at times positively dull. Trading or
ders were not pressing and the fooling \ttu u
shade easier , partly in sympathy with corn ,
Tbo possible exception was the relative
strength in December , owing to some orders
to sell September and buy the month named ,
with few sellers appearing , No. 2 whitooate
for September sold at 24c. They were sub
sequently offered at 2ixd$2lc , No. 2 reg
ular sold fairly well at 2Uc.
In provisions the tendency Is still some
what favorable for holders. Trading opened
this morning with u fooling qulto bullisn and
the market promptly showed an advancing
inclination under the lead of lard. In the
last named article there was considerable
stir and also a rather sharp advance. Porli
and short ribs were also in comparatively
Rood domaudifor a while after the opening ,
Subsequently operations all around became
conservative , yet there was no marked
chance in the prevailing tone and the besl
prices of the day were obtained at or Just bo
Toro the adjournment of 'change. Based or
yesterday's last quotations the day's nctua
advance in pork was Affi'TKc , in lard 10@12V i
and in short ribs Z

The Situation In Northeastern Ne
braska Very Klnttorlnir.
Sioux CITY , In. , August 7. [ Specinl to
TUB Biiu.1 There was n very heavy ram
between Norfolk and this city , Cedar nnd
Wuyuo counties being In the center of the
storm. The upper branches of the Logan
are bank full and a washout is reported on
the Hnrtlngton branch. So far as appears
on the Norfolk branch llttlo damage was
done , while a heavy rain will bo of great ad
vantage to grass , corn nnd other Into crops.
The general outlook for crops has boon unus
ually lino. Some threshing of wheat in
Wayne county gave from twenty to twenty-
seven bushels per ncre.
The grading is completed nnd bridging well
under way on the Sioux City & Ogdcn mil-
rend , or Pnclflo Short Line , to Plainvlow , in
fierce county. A largo portion of the grad
ers on this line have gone to work on the
Sioux City & Northwestern railroad between
Merrill station and Palisades , whore this
railroad Is to intersect the Manitoba rail
road , thus making u second direct line to
Diiluth , and with the Union Pacific a con
tinuous line to the Pacillc coast from Sioux
City.
The corn palace festival in Sioux City will
in many respects excel either of its prede
cessors. The piiUxco will bo higher and more
ample. The harvest excursions will enable
many to see Nebraska's mammoth crops and
take in this festival.
