TUB Bnn.l Wheat prices traveled back arid
forth within a rariRO of about MO to-day nnd
tlio market was rather uluppclsh In temper
and action. Trade WAS light and values
established themselves on a slightly higher
range than .yesterday. Opening trades in
December were nt 70Vc. The market ad
vanced to 70 ? c , reacted to 70c , rallied to
TOlifc , around which point It hung for a long
tlmo. About 12 o'clock it broke back to
78J < c on tlio receipt of intcltlgonco of the
failure of another Boston leather house for
11,000,000. A recovery to TOJ/o followed and
again the market took a tone of steadiness ,
with only light business passing. Too ilnal
quotation was TO c. September started In
at 77j c , ranged ut 7r77Jc tlio first hour ,
settled back to 77c , advanced to
77 o. slipped down to 77Jo , re
acted to 77o , and cloned at 77o.
There was a fairly active trade In August ,
which opdtiod nt 73if c , ranged nt 78 > fa77Ji'c ( ,
nnd closed nt 77 ; < o , In a news way tlio
blackboards xvcra frightful. Upon them
was recorded the fact that exports from At-
lantlo ports amounted to 1 00,000 bushels in
wheat nnd nearly that much In flour ; that
the total shipments from eleven principal
points of accumulation oust and west footed
up to 025,000 bushels , against 039,000 bushels
received ; tliat the local receipts were 157,000
tmshols nnd local shipments UIS.OOO bushels.
One llttlo thing that excited unusual comment
wus the arrival of thrco cars of new spring
wheat from Nebraska , two of which eroded
No. 2. This Is In a measure but confirmation
to the predictions of an unusually early har
vest and the movement of spring wheat the
whole district over. Advices from many
points In Dakotii und Minnesota Indicate
thut harvest Is mnklng rapid progress , and
if the wenthor keens good a forward move
ment of tome Importance is expected to begin
l.v the middle or 20th of August. This seems
like an extraordinary statement , but a good
many people here and In Minneapolis con
fidently expect to see wheat "coming to the
front" freely long before the end of August.
It may turn out lute the anticipated "early
movement" of winter wheat. Wheat started
nil right and has neon moving over since , but
such an enormous quantity was needed to
fill up the chinks and supply the in tenor con
sumptive demand that little impression has
yet boon made In the augmentation of "visi
ble stocks. " Warehouses in the northwest
have novur been more nearly swept clean
than now. Ofllclal reports from four
olcvntor companies , embracing 309 elevators ,
show a total stoclrxof 01,000 bushels in the
whole northwest. There are something like
700 elevators usually Included in the com
plcto statements of the back country stock.
The activity in the demand for cash corn
was afrmn n feature of the market. Export
ers nro Meady buyers and the homo trade
also appears willing , to judge from the free
movement towards consuming centers , to
stock up ut present prices. Some uneasiness
is also being expressed concerning the out-
iooK for the growing crop , and some country
buying orders were received hero to-day.
Atlantic seaboard clearances' wore only mod
erate yesterday , but that is for the moment
curtailed by the scarcity of ocean tonnago.
Trading was fairly nctlvo at times , but there
wan not much doing In' the last hour and
prices held up well throughout. August ,
which closed yesterday at 80 > c , wound up
to-day nt 80c , and September advanced
from aOJ/fSSlSJ c nt the close yesterday to
BOK < 33Gc os the flnal quotation to-day.
Outs were more active but easier in snlto
of the indications of firmness in the other
markets. Crcp reports continued favorable ,
nnd an element of weakness was the increas
ing receipts of new oats. Selling orders
were on a more liberal scnlo and n good spec
ulative business was recorded , with August
easy at 21c and next month at a simile dliv
count , while May sold oft .J o to 25 c. No ,

to store were quiet nt UlJ c.
The provision triulo commanded fair at
tention. In a speculative way there was no
particular Iffo. but- operators were appar
ently more inclined to favor the bull tlmn
the bear siilo and on the breaks sutTored the
shorts showed an anxiety to cover. In fact ,
the heaviest buying of the day was attrib
uted to parties engaged In covering outstand
ing contracts. The feeling wns quite strong
nnd the improvement noted In the tone .yes
terday was fully maintained. Prices were
also higher , and at the adjournment pork
und lard showed a not advance , based on
yesterday's closings , of 7 > @lUo and short
ribs of C@10o. _

The better grades of native steers were
scarce , the receipt * oelng made up largely of
coarse corn-fed westerns. The market ad
vanced 5IOo on beeves und the offerings
were soon picked up. Butchers' stock was
quite plentiful aud sold lower. As showing
the feeling a buyer remarked that butchers'
stock was selling higher hero in proportion
than anything else , and higher than at other
places , and that tbo buyers would have to
got It lower or lot It alone. Good leeders are
wanted , but cattle of that class are very
scarce and buyers are unable to fill their
orders.
Heavy and mixed hogs advanced EC , and
the receipts being light were picked up In

A JOURNALISTIC CURIOSITY.
Emperor Franz Josof'H Newspaper
HAH a Circulation of Tlirco CoptcM.
Perhaps ono of the most rcmiirkublo
journtils in Europe If not In the world
upjHiiirs dally ut Vienna , although wo
must statent the outset that it docs not
como to tlio view of the ( , 'onoml public.
The owner nntl publifaher of this jour
nalistic curiosity is no loss a person
than His Majesty Fran : : Josef , Kmporor
of Austria-Hungary. Ilo caused the
paper to bo constructed for Ills private
convenience.
Franz Josef in a man of business , BO
that the affairs of state take up u { jroat
portion of Ills tltno. TIe hns therefore
little leisure for reading the Vienna
dally papers ; and if ho had this leisure
ho would not gather from their columns
what ho Ecoliti and obtuhib in the peru
sal of his own particular journal , It is
not enough for him to learn what Is go-
lnj > on in tlio world from day to day ; ho
is especially eager to ascertain what la
thought of his administration in Kuropo
and America. The preparation of this
paper is as unique us la its yuruobo.
The force requisite to its management
is quito numerous , occupies A largo portion
tion of the government building , and
constitutes almost n department of It
self. The nnnunl cost reaches $80,000.
At the poop o' day the labors on this
curioua shoot commence. The foreign
papers nro then brought from the rail
way station nnd distributed among the
several sub-editors. Each paper Is care
fully scannedand whenever there is
discovered any nllnstoii , either director
remote , to the Austrian eovornmont or
the imperial family thoplaco is marked
with n blue pencil and the marked
papers are sent up to the respective sub
editors , who cutdown , wherever this is
possible , the marked articles.
As the Imperial Review appears in
Gorman language , and ns most , or nt
least the freest criticisms , are found in
foreign pnporsno inconsiderable amount
of tha work consists in making transla
tions.
It is now late in the evening. All the
matter , having by various hands boon
reduced to the ono language rooulrod ,
is handed to engrossers , Before the
early morning those must have trans
cribed nil that hits been given them to
copy ; for by that time it must bo ready
for the emperor. Three copies of this MS.
journalnre prepared , one for the em
peror , ono for the minister of foreign
affairs , and ono for the secretary of
state. A fourth Is novur printed under
any circumstances ; and not n soul who
is unconnected with the preparation of
the journals is allowed to glance into
olthorof the three authorized copies.
The emperor's copy is written upon the
finest linen paper ; those for the minister -
tor and secretary upon paper of a some
what lesser quality. The writing looks
ns if it were engraved , and must always
bo up to this high standard of penman
ship , no matter how great the pressure
of time.
When there is little political excite
ment the journal contains but four or
five pages , but there nro times when as
many as sixteen or twenty have been
written. It is the emperor's unalter
able custom to read this paper as soon
ns lie arises in the morning , and no
ruler in Europe is an earlier riser than
ho.
ho.In
In case an article of more than ordi
nary weight strikes his attention ho
causes his minister to bo summoned fern
n consultation in regard to U , Rut ho
reads the whole of its contents every
daywhatover their relative importance ,
nnd thus ho is daily kept informed as to
what is the judgment of the civilized
world concerning his administration of
the government.
