CHICAGO- July lO. fSpecIal Telegram to Tim UnE , ] Wheat market broke to-day. It opened up ntrong nnd advanced with a show of buoyancy. Thu Insnrovemont wns only fractional , however , nnd the market hesitated and noted loppy nt n slight advance. It then turned down nnd not once thereafter did It tnnko a decided stand , it ruled heavy most of the session and closed weak around tholnsldo figures of the dnv. Enrly cables' were excep tionally strong , nnd domestic news relating to crops nnd business did not point to any important change. In the cash wheat market a degree of activity above the overage was reported from all quarters , and the same was true In the 'flour trade , Minneapolis ndvlscd of nt least ono very licavy trade in Hour on foreign nccount nt n. good ndvance , and local ngents were Immersed to their oars In negotiations. The trouble with the local tpcculntlvo market scorned to bo that tlicro wore too many long nnd a scarcity of alarmed shorts. The shorts have been the largest buyers for the nast two days , nnd with , the supplying of their wants and the nonappearance ance on u generous scale of the great outside public , the advance stopped. Had the pub lic rallied to the support of. the market , as it Bornotltrss does , a further advance would have been cxtromol.\ probable , but , under tbo circumstances , the professional element felt that tho.v had reason to believe that for the present nt. least the boom w.is spoilt , and this morning when prices turned down , they were there to help the thing along. The re sult was n very actlvo and a very weak market. An advance right at the beginning of the movement of the new winter wheat crop struck the crowd as being about nil they had nny right to expect , especially in view of the general belief that the government report as to the condition of spring wheat would not confirm the worst reports from the northwest. As usual , thu ndvance tips as to the government estimates wore in circulation. Ono that obtained the dignity of n hearing wns that the cotiuition of win ter wheat would bo given at OOo uud spring at 87c- December opened at bZ c. It hitched up J o on strong cables , but turnoel down very soon nnd declined steadily to 8lc. A reaction put the price tne and another dip brought it down to 0e. During the last half hour It several times got to 81o nnd once or twice "split" above , but right nt the close the market ngnln got weak and tTio Html quotation w.is SO c , a net loss of Ijjfc as comnarod with yesterday. A moderately active trade wag done In September , which opened at 80c , sold up to Sl&c * nnd worked down to 70) ) et ! where it closed. The loss on the etay was IJ c. July was thu firmest month on the list. It opened nt 85c , for quite a time ranged ut 84 @ 85o , anil then broke in sympathy with the deferred deliveries to S3 c , closing , however , nt 835 c. Only a light aggregate business was done In July. The cash demand for corn was unnbate-d and caused a firmness observable in the speculative brnnch of business also. The re ceipts nro running light for this time of the year , nnd at the prevailing moderate price the consumption of American corn at home nut1 abroad is enormous. The foreign mar kets were llrm und the cxuort demand wae good. New York was very flrm for July , and the demand for cash corn in that mar ket appeared to equal the situation "hero. The clearances from Atlantic ports was small and thb quantity on ocean pasaago for Great Britain and the continent of Europe Increased during the wcok 850,000 bushels. Lntcr tun weakness in wheat sympathet ically atTected corn nud caused some reaction in the end f re m the top prices of the day , Fluctuations wcro neither numerous nor marked. The range was , us usual in recent dealings , narrow , and trading was confined for a greater portion of the time to n vor.v 1 small gathering of- the usual operators , Prices at the close did not materially differ from yesterday's final figures , being : July 80o , September 80)6o and October 30 > fc. In oats a moderate , trndo was recorded on the regular market , with prices averaging u shade ilvmor. Receipts were only moderate end.withdrawals from local stocks for ship ment were increased to tbe liberal aggregate of 03,574 ; mostly No. S whlto. Sellers were not urgent , with HOIHO business noted In the way of changing August and September intc May , the latter improving * { c to 25c , will September at 23 > @ 224e. } ; Inquiry for cai ' lots to go to store was light , with No. . ' quotable at 2) ) c In the regular way. .Provisions . were made somewhat interestIng / Ing by a bear raid on pork. Cudahy , Hald win and other traders of more or less lui parlance inaugurated , shortly after the open ing , a sharp hammering movement in the ar ticle named. Finding the market practically unprotected and the shorts oven sinallet buyers than usual on tbc wpuk turn , the : took hold with vigor and In a bhnr time sent pork down 32 @ 35c , will -channel worth mentioning. Traders hai it nil their own way nnd carried their i > oin without meeting with any opposition. Lari nnd Bhortrlbs , however , held up quite wol under the circumstances , though the aver Dga for both showed n little decline fron yesterday's ' level. Trading all uround wai only fair nnd without special feature. As oilght bo expected , the drop In pork dcmnr n'.lzcd the outside holders , many of when sold freely , Toward adjournment porl stuadlod up und recovered about lOo of tin raiders' depression , U closed , however , wit ) an actual decline of 17 @ 20o. The more hopeful feeling over the western railroad situation , which made Its appear-unco yesterday after noon , wns still prominent this morning , nnd resulted In higher figures for most of the list , though the weakness of the London market made some of the London favorites lower here , the most Important being Laito Shora nnd Erie , which wcro % nnd # per cent lower respectively , The gains In the remainder , however , extended to K percent.
