[ Special Telegram to TIIK linn. ] Wheat opened soft nnd lower this morning on generous rnlns through the Kcil river vnlloy mid nn Increase of 1,040,000 liushcls In the "amount on passage. " July wheat opened nt SOo nnd sold off to 7,0 ® TO c. Seiitcmber opened fit 78J o nnd sold oft toTSj c , and Dccomcer opened at 80 } o nnd sold down to 70 c , The market reacted from this rnngo of prices nnd recovered J o or such n mutter , where tt hung for a time in an Indecisive fashion , but , suddenly gain ing strength , uindo u spurt ot considerable importance. In this up-rcovemcnt July led. Indeed , the bulge In July constituted the sen * eation of the day. Starting from around TO c , It climbed to nbovo 81o , nnd after a momentary reaction steamed to S2 c. It Rubscquently broke back to SO c nnd recovered to 81 0 , where there \vn n pause nnd another spurt to 82 0 , which was the closo. Hutch's brokers wore especially nctivo In July nnd ho was given credit tor It. As u matter of fact , thuro Is still a good sized open Interest in July scattered about among commission houses , and < rjn any little flurry the shorts run f.oi' cover. Finding little whcnt for sale they became panic stricken. While this open Interest continues anywhere near as largo as It is nt present , the experi ence of todny is liable to bo repeated at any moment. One thing that made the July shorts nervous thin morning was disappoint ment with regard to tfio movement in the 1 southwest Mbndny wns to witness the beginning of the delngo nt St. Louis , but 5 the postings were only 7,000 bushels. The dolny In the early movement ia vexatious to the benru and they are cosily disturbed on thnt account. While July \vas behaving in this eccentric manner the rcsi of the market was naturally more or less affected. Only a light trade was passing in September. December was the popular month. Operations in July were of n desultory character , but a steady busi ness on n moderately lurgo scjlo was done in December , though trade was notof tho"flrst magnitude. " December advanced early from 70 0 to B0 > c , sold back to 80c , advanced to i SO'e'c , reacted > { c , advanced to 81c , wont to 80 > jo , up to 80&o and down to 80J . It then 6s ? steadied and advanced once moro to 80 c , closing at 80)fc. ) The following cash sales were reported , however : 25,000 bushels of choice hard at 04J c , free on board ; 50,000 bushels nt 93 o ; 25,1)00 , ) bushels of No. 2 red nt 84e , free on board , and three lots of 10.000 bushels each nt 82c , S2 > fo and 83o in store. Forolcn houses on 'chanpo were good buyers , and G cargo Smith bid for 1,000,000 bushels nt one time during the .session. The northwest is n source of a great deal of bull news nnd the southwest , bearish. Proba bility of rains in the winter wheat sections was among the later Items discussed uu- easily by the bears. Viewed ns u whole , the course of the market wns extremely irreg ular. July established u gain of lj o and December lobt K@ % ° - August and Septem ber show a loss ol jtfo. The demand for export at the seaboard and tbo excellent inquiry hero for shipment , together with the appearance of deliveries Blackening , gave u good deal ot strength to the speculative dealings in corn. None of the stock hero appears available for delivery , on July contracts. At nny rate it Is not yet forthcoming for that purpose and the amount of it is only 1.5iO- ; 000 bushels. The quantity going forward from nero itceps stocks qtiito bare , and the foreign demand is only limited by tno amount of freight room. An uncertain feel A ing likewise prevailed concerning the grow ing crops In same important localities. Liv erpool was quoted llrm and higher , and the Now York muiltot was in full sympathy with the advance here , St. Louis , however , inclining to hold bacK. The estimated re ceipts hero to-morrow are 405 cars. The price advanced l < o on July delivery , % c on August , and } { @ % o on September over yes terday's closing ligurcs. The llnal quota tions were : July , ! i5J4@35e ; August , 85c nnd September , 80@30.56c , Onts were quiet and featureless , with future deliveries tending to fairness. Some of the recent free buyers of July were n'galn present , but the aggregate speculative busi ness wns only moderate , the struggle in corn extending In a mild degree to oats. Julv sold ut n narrow range of 2223Xc , with two following months nt about Jj'c discount. Rcooiuts wore liberal , but the withdrawals from store were reduced 4,700 bushels. A few sales .of No. 2 oats to go to store were made generally at 23c , indicating a fully steady tone. Provision traders \voro uot particularly troubled to handle their busiiicss. Thclr cash orders were not us liberal as of Into , nnd in a speculative way trading wns wanting in vigor , freedom nnd volume. The day , nil told , wns scarcely moderately nctivo. yet the market showed the possession of surprising underlyingstrength. . The monthly stock showing , though In many Instances larger than expected , wns overcome in its Influence by advices from the stock yards and rumors that a prominent paolier was supporting pork nnd shoit ribs. Lard was the weakest article on the list , yet the actual changes in prices all .around were uoulinod to u small ' limit. The closings , however , were cencr'ally under yesterday's ' last figures. Both pork nnd lard suffered n decline of 007 0 , whi'o ' short ribs rested unchanged for July to ' ( Ho lower for later deliveries. OI11OAGO tilVJ3 ftl'OCH. MA.HKHJ' .
