ing to bestow all his patronage on ono
placo. ho went to another , leaving his
string of fish in the water tied to u root.

nice string , and leaving them where ho
had caught thorn , again changed his
base of oparations.

excellent luck and soon had the third
string of line fish. Finally ho concluded
ho had bettor get the result of his
catch all together , thinking ho had

About forty years ago a Gorman ped
dler disappeared from tills neighbor
hood , and the condition of his horse
nnd cart led to the belief that he had
boon murdered ; but as the body could
not bo found , that suspicion could not
bo verified , says a Woodvlllo , Vt. , dis
patch. About ton years afterward the
bones of a human boiucr wore dug up
near the point where the team of the
peddler was found , by workingmen
while plowing the road. Rings found
on the fingers engraved with the name
of the murdered man served ns a coin-
plotc identification. Suspicion * which
attached to several persons in the firat
instance , grew doubly strong , as evidence -
donco in the shape of goods , known
to hwo boon owned by the Gor-
mun. wore found. No action was tukon ,
however , and the suspected man , a
young nnd well-to-do farmer , sold out
and left the county. His name was
Alexander Groonough. Ho went to
Canada , and after residing for some
years near Cowansvillo , Quebec , ho was
driven out of the province by throats of
arrest on a charge of counterfeiting.
From Canada ho wont to Central Amer
ica and from there to Chili. A few
weeks ago ho was taken violently ill ,
and was expected to dlo. On what was
supposed to bo his death-bed ho con
fessed tbo murder of the Gorman , and
pointed out where ho buried the body.
The spot corresponded with the location
whore the bones were found. The
strange nnrt of the story is that Grccn-

oUgh did" not die , nnd the written con
fession , nroporly authenticated , is now
on its way to tins country , while Green ,
ough is under the surveillance of the
Chilian officials. It is understood that
Grconough implicated another party
who resided near the scone of the mur
der , but who is now dead.

dispensing holy water to worshippers at
the entrance of an ancient temple , says
the New Yorli Sun.
According to his account in the
Electrical World of to-day , Ewbank
himself found a description of it in the
"Spiritalia , " published bylloron in the
sixteenth century and containing nn ex
posure of the deceits of the Egyptian
hierarchy. The apparatus has
ail the elements of our coin-
operated perfume machines , there being
a slot at the top -for receiving the
coin , a pi voted lover on which the coin
fell and a valve which was operated to

Thus it appears probable that the
