THB Br.B.I The wheat market opened 1@
l o off this morning , with trading around
Bljfo for Juno , 60 ; ( gSOitfo for July , 78) ) 0 for
September nnd 80 > @ 80 c for December.
The edge of the bull feeling was violently
blunted by weaker European cables , duo to
frco nnd general rains In southern Uussla ,
"removing all apprehensions of a crop fail
ure. " The bear feeling was fed further
through the day by "harvester returns" from
Kansas und Missouri , giving 33 and 31 bushel
yields per acre. The gains In that quarter
reported yesterday do not appear to have
been Important. They have not Interrupted
the progress of harvesting , except locally.
Kcports from southern Illinois , southern In
diana , Kentucky nnd Tennessee are coming
In most favorable. Advices from the north
west continue to bo conflicting nnd contra
dictory in the extreme. From the very best
sources It Is learned that the crop Is n par
tial failure , und also that It la promis
ing a big yield. There is reason to bo-
llevo that the "Improvement" mentioned In
so many dispatches nnd loiters is from n
very low point. Ono very conservative
writer , after n lecture on the foolishness of
operating on the short spring wheat crop
theory , says that the prospects are line , nnd
tlmtthuro should , bo a "three-quarter crop"
if conditions nro mujntnlnod. The Oregon
letter , quoted elsewhere , cunnotboconstrued
ns bullish , and neither can Plll.sbury's esti
mate of 00 per cent of an average crop iu
Minnesota and Dakota. On the other hand ,
almost no bad reports are coming in from
the winter wheat districts , Murray esti
mates that the winter wheat crop will bo
800,000,000 bushels , und the total about
485,000,000. , Tlio total may bo right , but tlio
final estimates may render a shifting of the
detail figures necessary. The winter wheat
crop may bo ! i ; > 0UOO,00'J bushtls , and the
spring wheat loss than expected. Tlu mar-
kit wan very active , very nervous and very
irregular from llrst to last. July sold down
to 7Uc , reacted to S0 } c , and broke to 7 ! ) } < c.
Jt then rallied to bO c and broke in
less than half nn hour to 7 ! ) > < o
ngnln. This low point was reached shortly
before the close. The rally carried the
pnco up fractionally. The close was at TSIJtfe ,
or IJjfc lower than yesterday's last quotation.
September ranged at 7SJ < f@77 ? e and closed
nt77J c. December , which was I he most
active future on the list , broke to 79 0 , re
covered on the general swell to 80c , sold at
TWffWi e , ami closed ut TO c , or 2c under
yesterday's Until figure. The feature of the
day was thn heavy selling by leading boars
nnd the "throwing" of long wheat by Now
York people nnd by the muss of little bulls
nnd pyramid builders. It did uot seem ns
though the strong bulls had turned tail ,
though the last weakness wa probably
caused by the selling out of some good nixed
V lines of long wheat. The bears were aggres
sive on the line weather , the bright harvest
fix news from the winter wheat country und on
easier private cables. The market was big
and broad. .
The tone of corn was considerably easier
to-day , owing In n great measure to tha lower
and less nctlvo wheat market , but also duo in
some degree to the general absence of rain
in such heavy quantities and the Increase in
temperature. The demand for export is still
active nt the seaboard , but the clearances
yesterday wcro inconsiderable , duo.however ,
it Is claimed , to the scarcity of vessel room.
Tindlmj wan not very active , and the range
of prices , us usual , was restricted to narrow
limits. * Closing prices show the following
comparisons with the final quotations yester
day : June , 85) cto-day , ngainst 35"H'c ; July ,
35o nnd September i5 ! ( < $35.jfo against 35c
nnd,3G'f'c , , respectively , yesterday.
In oats there was considerable chunglne of
July into September , at u shadi/in favor of
the latter , and also some transferring of
September to May. The actual now business
was not great , with favorable weather con
ditions , liberal rcceintH nnd a lessened cast-
ward movement , pausing an easy tone , which
was mtcnsiticd by the weakness in
other ccrenls. Nearly all tlio months
sagged } f ( < l > } fc. Considerable long July came
out.'solllng us low as 22' < fe , and later recov
ering slightly , while Septembar was around
22ochiolly"and May at 2C @ 20'Hc. ' No. 2
oats to go to store wcro dull ut about 2 fc.
In provisions there was more doing. Cash
buyers continued to have In hand a good
many orders Irani domesllo consumers and
exporters , and in a speculative way in
creased activity was the rule. In its move
ment , however , the day's mnrltoo was Irreg
ular. Early , under nn uneasy feeling in
duced by advices from the stock yards , a lit
tle boom was developed , and prices all
around touched higher iluures than tlioso of
C '
yesterday. For a time the trade had n bullish 1-
1ll
f ish tendency , but ns soon ns holders showed
a disposition to realize a sharp reaction oc
curred. The morning advance v/os lost and
thu receding turn generally sent the market !
under tho'opcnliif ? quotations. In pork the
decline uctuallv suffered was 7 } @ 10c and in
short ribs 2 > iQ5c. Lard closed unchanged.

apparently on a less encouraging outlook
among the lines , and other stocks sympa
