figures. This scorned to bo duo , in n great
measure , to the prevalent belief that the
Northwestern rains came lee late to repair
the dnmago resulting from the drouth , to
the firmness In the cash markets cast
nnd west , nnd to the advance In
Liverpool , consequent upon diminishing
India shipments , and the further confirma
tion of the reports of damage to the Russian
crops. The speculative sentiment was bear
ish to quite n degree , but the market was
hold steady by causes and Influences beyond
speculative control. Only n small amount of
now business was reported bv Now York ,
'but the out inspection , there , for two days
was 220,000 bushels. The export clearances
were only about ono-third that quantity ,
showing that there is n tjood local eastern
demand. The shipping returns show that
there is n good milling movement from all
points of accumulation , whllo the receipts
emphasize the fact that the country reserves
nro down to the very lowest ebb. As an off
set to the statistics tending to show a rapid
reduction of the visible slocks , dispatches
were afloat about the now wheat arrivals nt
southern points. St. Louis advised that 5
cars of now wheat had boon sold , to arrive
y there this week , prioo 75c. Baltimore wired
> that 200 bushels of now wheat had actually

bring the fact forward that the new-
crop movement is soon to begin. This move
ment is not likely to bo any earlier than

uully firmed up under the influence of good
buying by Hutchinsou and others. July ad

crowd all the wheat it would take , and on
the little breaks ho was n liberal buyer. The
tendency of bis operations wns to narrow
the market. The operations in the pit wore
on rather restricted scales. In the absnnce
of strongly bullish news New York developed
oped an undertone of weakness toward the
last of the session. No great pressure was
necessary to put prices down fractionally.

The corn market opened with n weaker
tone in view of important changes In local
weather and the clearing weather reported
from the southwest , where heavy rains have
been almost continuous for the past ten days.
The weakness was of short duration , how
ever , ns reports soon begau to circulate of
fields covered with water m southern Illi
nois. Later , this news was supplemented by
diminishing receipts hero , the estimated in
spection returns for to-morrow being placed
nt 280 cars. The shipping demand was also
nctivo and ut higher prices , and the foreign
markets were firmer. There wns n fair

range of prices wns somewhat wider than

Close to two thousand cattle made up to
day's receipts. The market ruled unusually
slow , In fact It was flat all the morning. The
reports from other points were unfavorable ,
and the packers had orders to buy 20@-.r > o
lower. The shippers hud information that
their cattle were selling on the Chicago mar
ket at about what they paid for them hero.
Under such circumstances the buycr3\woro
very timid , and the volume of business was so
small during the forenoon ns to cut no figure
In the market. It was late before salesmen
could find nn outlet for their cattle oven ut n
concession of 15Z20c. ( It bus been weeks
since the market lias boon in such n bnd con
dition as it was to-day. There have been
low days and slow days , but nothing so bad
as to-dn.v's ' trade. There is only ono word
that can anywhere near express the situa
tion , and that word Is "demoralized. "
IJutclicrs' stock did not suffer so much ns
bouf cattle , but it was weak. There was
nothing new in the stacker and feeder line ,
excepting a disposition on the part of buyers
to obtain u reduction In prices.

llocs sold In the same notch as yesterday ,
and that Is about all there Is to say about the
market. The demand was good , both local
nnd shipping , nnd the pens were cleared at
an early hour. Nearly everything sold
within n range of 5c , the most popular price
bmrig $3.C ( > for heavy and mixed hogs. Some
choice light sold as high ns $4.05. Thus far
this week the market bas been very steady ,
and there have been no fluctuations in
prices.

There were n few sheep hero , but they
were consigned direct to a packer , and were
not offered on the market. There is a pretty
good demand , und If there wcro any desira
ble muttons hero they would sell at firm
prices.
