TUB T&IjL-XALH PUNCH. It llocorda Cntirtlann Flnco Paid to Cnptnlu Wood , Comptroller Goodrich concluded his Inves tigation Into the alleged Inaccurate reports of courtesans' fines by Captain Wood , cleric of the police court. The examination ex tended up to the end of May. In this work lie was assisted by the committee on finance of the council. It Is estimated that 800 receipts were is sued to sporting women during the month , jut of this number only about one hun dred and twenty-five could bo procured. Some of the missing ones had been de stroyed or the recipients had loft town. On only twenty of the first forty receipts discovered had Captain Woods , It Is alleged , reported. The total amount on all tbo re ceipts of Mav which the captain. It is * Bald , failed to report , Is over $203. TJiB , with the discrepancy of the months of March and April , amounts to nearly $100. " "How did you discover the captain's fnll- uro to make correct reports ! " was asked n member of the llnnnco committee. "Well , " ho said , "I have a little to do with the finances of the city , nnd in looking into them , It occurred to mo that tbo police court ought to bo sou-sustaining. " "Is it not ! " "Yes , but I mean there ought to bo a reve nue. " "How ? Do not the fines of abandoned women go to the school fund ! " "Tho flues do , but the costs go to the city. " "How much are the costs In each casol" "Something over S3. " ' Well , why suspect the clerk ! " "Because the rovcnuo from prostitutes' ' fines to tbo city is no greater than it was several years ago , although the number of abandoned women has doubled. The only way to Inqulro into the business was to hunt up the receipts amonir the women , and wo have done It. Hero are some of them. There Is no chance for being mistaken. All these fines must bo receipted in the name of Judge Berka. Whoa he ro- cclvcs a line , ho acknowledges It over his own signature. When Wood receipts for a line ho is und"r instructions from Judge Berku to use a rubuor stump bearing that olllcliil's name. Bcsldts this Wood , when housed the stamp , pcrfoiatcd the receipt with a private punch , and there it Is you sco. There Is no use In his saying thcro Is a mis take about thb. His punch shows ho re ceived this money. "I see by Tun BCB that wood attacks Scavcy , holding him , as also Judge Borka , responsible for this utttuck , as beln c Inspired by malicious motives. Souvov know nothing about this and did nothing in the matter except to carry out our instructions. Wo wanted ofllcors to collect' the receipts , and ho g.ivo them to us. " "Aio you inquiring into the accounts of any other city olllccrl" "J can't tell you. " "Aio you not Investigating the meat nnd milk Inspection 1" "Well , you know they do not receive any fines or fees.Hut there is ono thlnir I shall nsist upon , and that is that they shall make more regular and more specific reports. When they condemn milk , in sat and vegetables , they must tell to whom these articles be longed so thai if the same parties are found belling bad food more than once wo can make them squirm for it. " "Aro you not inquiring into the finances of thobouidof education. ! " "Wo.lwvo no jurisdiction over that body , but the comptroller has. At the last legisla ture a bill wi\s passed authorizing him to , an nually to chock up the accounts of the school board. They have not been checked up for two years. When Omaha was a city of the llrst class , these accounts . used to bo checked by the auditor , but that olllcc was abolished under the charter fora metropolitan city , but power was given tone no other ofilcer to inquire into this school board's books. Last * winter , as I say , the comptroller was authorized , ana at tomorrow row night's ' mooting of the council ho will asic for a man to aid In the work. Ho can not do it without assistance , " "What do you expect to flnd ? " "I don't know , but they do say that the old aadltor's ofllco was fearfully and wonder fully Cotton up. " Captain T. T. Wood , clerk .of the police court , walkcd.intotho court room as usual yesterday , deposited his hat and cano as usual in tholr customary places , and was scon bur'.cd ' in his record of the misdoings of sundry people. No indication of any mental perturbanco appeared on his countenance. Ho appeared ttio same as ho has morning after morning during his two years' service as clerk of the courts. To a BBC reporter the captain said that the charges against hlmwcro prompted by the police because ho was solid with Col onel Floyd of the Diamond. Beyond this , the captain would not say anything , giving as his reasons the fact that his Masonic friends had advised him. to say nothing about tlio. matter and not even road what the local papers have to say about him and the alleged peculations. But Captain Wood has practically been removed , and ho will no longer preside over the big book which contains tbo record of the sins and woes of sundry resi dents of Omaha. The council committee on flnanco lias made its report to the mayor , finding Cap tain Wood Involved for upwards of four hundred dollars , as mentioned above. It , Is said that tlio captain was not only a froiuontcr of the Diamond pool room , Ami has really been In the pay of that house , and as a conlidant of thopollco has given Colonel Floyd certain tips relative to the con templated arrest of gamblers , which has been of value to the fraternitv. The captain will bo immediately removed , it is claimed , the mayor only hesitating as to whether ho shall asic for the officer's resignation or summarily dismiss hirn. But the end is not yet , The council committee on flnanco is still working upon the cnss , and In accordance with instructions from the mayor will in vestigate the doings during tholr term of ofllco of License Inspector Tunibull. as well as the other inspectors mentioned above. The latter receive no * fees , but it Is inti mated that they might have been sugared by interested parties. A SECTION FOUliMrYN STABBED. Foreman Lyons Stubbed by a Section . Kinployc. Tbo members of the grievance- committee expressed themselves as confident that the matter would bo adjudicated wftbout any uespcrato issue being made , and thut the de mand that the agreement bo lived up to would bo respected. They state that the stand taken against a reduction will bo ud- bcrud to at ail hazards , and that no other proposition of settlement than the rostora * tiau of the established scale of wages on the Kansas City Central has been made. The delay occasioned In withholding tholr decision on the Thirtieth street Injunction case , which involves a question of consti tutional 'rights , relative to the consolidation of the Omaha Horse Hallway and the Cable Tramway comuanlcs , Is causing some annoy ance. The members of this Omaha Street Hallway company , the name of the consoli dated' company , earnestly desire to proceed with their proposed extensions , but dislike taking any risks until the question of the legality of the consolidation has been settled , Said ono of thorn : "JudgoDoano has ruled against us so often and in nearly all our cases with the motor people , that wo expect to be knocked out again. I can say that , If ho docs deckle our consolidation unconstitutional , ho will simply stop the expenditure for Improvements In Omaha thh year , of 400,030 cash money. " CnniIU n "lllr-il. " It now transpires that Howard , the man arrested by Ofllcor Koyser , Saturday , is no other than the shark who , for months , cap tured unwary strangers on tholr way from the Wcostor street depot to the business part of the city , and despoiled them of their money with bogus checks.
