Concerning the press dispatches scut out from Spokane Falls , relative to a deal be tween the Omaha road and the Oregon Rail way & Navigation , thereby opening a now trans-continental route , the omelals hero state that the report Is cither unfounded or has been misconstrued. It has long been supposed that the Oregon & Pacilie and sev eral other minor sections of detached road In that vicinity wore backed by the Chicago & Northwcstoin. Hut between tticso and the main line or any part of the Northwestern system proper , there Is a wide gap , nnd in view of which the ofiicials hero arc of the opinion that the Omnha road U not con nected with the deal. The only way thu Omaha road could reach this would bo In n deal with the Union Pucitlc nt Sioux City , or by n longer route , ut Omnha. Nothing Is known at Union Pueillc headquarters con cerning any such transactions. It is thought that the St. Paul , Minneapolis & Muultobii is the road that mav bo leaning in that direction. To the Master Plumbers Gentlemen : After keening pace with you along through this little light , which you hnvo , I mn certain , undertaken In a Bomowhat dreaming condition of mind , please Just let mo awaken you up before your dream Is over , or , perhaps , when you do awake you may find yourselves , ln quite n different climate , ana I think the cllmato Is hot enough whore you nre vlthout trying to Und any hotter. Now , gentlemen , slnco I may suppose you awakened out of your dt cam , will you please let me give my opin ion upon the resolutions expressed by Mr. Hussoy , your representative , at a meeting held at the Puxton hotel on Tuesday after noon ? First of nil 1 notice your business Is ham pered and interfered with on account of the rules formulated by the plumbers' union. Now I consider these rules the very Hand- railing to you which guides you to your several landings. These rules , I presume , are a limitation holding good a standard of wages of 50 cents per hour to every journey man plumber , also regulating the hours of labor , also that none except union men bo employed , and also a regulation of appren tices. Now , I hold that all of these rules are very necessary and arc reasonable In their natuio. Take the standard of wages.consldcr U , don't you think that that Is n good thing i Supposing you did not know of any stnn- daid of wugcs what would each of you rule by when figuring your wont , some men nro pleased wi'h a small Income , some with a reasonable in come , nnd some can never bo pleased , and the consequence would bo to grind down tbo poorworlungman. It is a grand system to have a figure upon which to work ; for In stance , taking a mechanical view of the mat ter. If one had no center from which to draw u circle , and a straight line from which to fina a squuro , what would bo the i esult , you would have no confidence In your perform ance , and so It would bo with you If you haa no standard of wages you would have no confluence in yourselves. Now , don't you think a limit of workincr hours is a good thing and advantageous to yourselves , yqmo amongst you would rather work men twelve hours n duv and pay tliom for nine before you would want work , and by having no standard of wages and np certain number of hours you are holding in view , how could you accomplish that ] Next Is that none but union men can bo employed. Is that not as bcneilei.U to you as to the jour neymen ? Why , n non-union man can work for what ho has a mind to , und if you wore allowed to employ whom you desired there would bo no need of a standard of wages nor a union. Take , as an illustration , the car penters ; they have u standard of wages , but it is buried by the allowance of musters to employ whom they choose. Then comes the limited number of apprentices ; I say thut is right nnd Just. Why , after a bov Is two years at the trade ho can no general work as well as any man , so the consequence would bo n shop filled with apprentices and very low men. Now , gentlemen , In concluding my opin ion , I say your suggestions are absurd and ridiculous in the extreme. I think that some among you ought to bo very quiet. Why , if any ono asked you to execute a piece of plumbing work , it would sound through you like u galvanic battery , as you never learned the trade and ono can not misjudge you when ho thinks that the leading parties among you are most Ignorant after such propositions i in nil o by you on Tuesday lust. And hero I * warn the journeymen plumbers to hold fast , o whut is good , as whenever they giva up to .hose rules suggested to them on Tuesday they place themselves be fore you a target to bo shot at. Hut I hope that , the jour neymen plumbers will be backed by all Avho want to see the work of the season go on , nnd I should more especially like to see a settlement for this cause , since there are Jtlicr trades ufTcctcd , und families will hunger in consequence.
