Tun UEB.I The whcnt mnrkot opened
fractionally lower , recovered a portion
tion of tlio loss , and roinaincd dull nnd just
barely flrm for tbo greater part of Urn ses
sion , but weakened decidedly toward the
end. The offerings were In the excess , and
the Inquiry was equally limited , so there
was no means of determining what was the
power of resistance In the market. The
early cables were dull and rather caller ,
but Inter private advices reflected a bettor
tone to trro foreign markets on account of
cold , wet weather on the continent. Some
of the best authorities In the old world con
tinue to report flattcrlnR crop urospects on
the continent and the unfavorable turn men
tioned can not yet bo serious cnouph to bo
considered of importance by them. Now
York had no now export business to report ,
thouirh bids wcro in vloso to the market
it was said. The diftlculty of obtaining
ocean freight room was assigned as one of
the reasons why nothing came of the negoti
ations , The visible supply decreased 1,050-
COO bushels last week , according to ofllclal
postlncs. This brings the total down to
21,28-1,511 bushels , against 2rCGl,031 bushels
n year ago , and 43,203,070 bushels two years
ago , on the corresponding date. The total
stocks are now about 400,000 bushels loss
than they wore at low water mark last year ,
two months later , and the Interior stocks are
now admittedly smaller than they wore
then. This fact lent to the market moro or
less sentimental strength and inspired not n
httlo buying. Ilutchlnson was a seller 'on
every Httlo rally , measuring Ills offerings ,
however , by the urgency of the demand.
Towards the end of the ses
sion a feeling of wonuncss took
possession of the market nnd prices cased off.
Well authenticated reports of low tempera
ture In the Manitoba country wore In circu
lation to-day , but they had no appreciable
effect. The minimum temperature at Win
nipeg last night was given by the signal ser
vice oniceat 22 = , St. VlncentSO3 and Prlnco
Albert 20 = . The posted list giving the later
observations quoted a moderation of temper
ature. Should the cold area work south into
the states sorno excitement might bo caused ,
but up to this writing no alarm whatsoever
is felt in the speculative arena. July wliont
opened at 70X@70 c , with sales immedi
ately nfterwara at 7UJ c. The market slowly
worked up to Ttijfc n"d swunp listlessly
around 7ll @ 7tJiC ! for a couple of hours :
then , on receipt of favorable cables and
frost tiows from Manitoba it bulged
feebly to " ! 6c , Hutchlnson's- offerings put
the market back to 7Gc , and n Plttsburg
plunger broke it to 7GJ c , on sale ? of a few
hundred thousand bushels. The brokers
generally believed to represent Cudahy
bought on the last decline , but not In sutll-
uiont quantities to cnook the downward ten
dency , and the price got to 6c. The close
was 7C > f@70 e , The weakness in May and
Juno was one of the conspicuous features of
the market late in the session. Juno sold
off nearly 2c , or down to 78J c , closing at 79c ;
during the last half hour than at any time
during the session.
There was a fairly active trade in corn , but
, at lower pr'.ces than ruled on Saturday.
July was in good demand by tlio shorts
'mound IWKc , against33J/Con Saturday , and
in the cash market , although the shipping
demand was good itviis at decidedly easier
priceo. The price of July at the close showed
a dcclinfi of > o as compared with Saturday's
closing quotation. Cash corn was nominally
at tbo same price at the close , to-day , as on
Saturday , but the bulk of to-day's business
was transacted at from J < @ ) /o lower figures
than prevailed on the preceding trading day.
Oats were fairly active in the way of
changing near deliveries Into moro deferred
futures , while now business was light , nnd
values ruled K@a ° lower. The weakness
was largely due to very heavy receipts and
the estimates of both oats and corn. The ar
rivals of oats wore greater than expected ,
with some four hundred cats talked of for
to-morrow. May sold down to 2lVo , and
Juno te SlS c , while July was about % v > pre
mium , at 22 c , early , to 22e , followed by a
partial recovery. September was about % o
above Juno. Car lots of No. 2 oata to go to
Btoro sold lower , at 21 40.
In provisions the week opened with a ner
vous feeling underlying the trade. The re
ceipts of hogs , to-day , scarcely reached the
number expected ; and , as there was seine
disposition upon the part of the professionals
to cover their short contracts in short ribs
and pork , the changes In the market favored
the Gelling element. Prices , nil around , av
eraged higher than on Saturday , though the
upward movement was moro noted in pork
and short ribs than in lard. In the last
named article the closing , in fact , was the
name as ou Saturday , to only 2' < c higher.
The advance established in pork , however ,
was Cc , and in short ribs 2 } < o to 5a

Monday , May 27.
The week opens with n liberal run of cattle
and with dealers generally looking for heavy
receipts for the first half of the week at
least. For that roation the cattle trudo was
slow to open , and the early market wus not
very active , but both packers und shippers
bought quite freely when they had onca got
down to business. The bulk of the beef and
shipping itcora hud chanced hands by midday
and nt prices not essentially different from
Saturday's market. The beef und shipping
steers sold at $3.25 < 33.S5 , but largely at (3.60
@ 3.SO. The supply of butchers' stock was
moderate , and prices not materially altered.
Cows sold nt f 1.60(33.00 ( and bulls at tl.75@
8.00. There were but eight loads of liUlu
northern cattle lioio and they constituted the
supply of feeders and stockers on Bale.
, For a Httlo while It looked as It the Bulling
Interests would got the worst of the deal , but
In the end , If there was any difference In the
market as compared with Saturday , It was
so slight as to bo hardly perceptible. The
prevailing price , llko Saturday , was SK20 , but
there was nothing so high as Saturday's top ,
nor were thcro so many nnlcs nt $1.2 , " , but on
the other hand , there were qulto n good many
sales at tl.15 on Saturday , and no lands n
low as that to-dny. The trade was fairly
active nt iho prices nnd everything was sold
at an early hour.
