ture. The first notable Incident was the
"running in" of nn out outsldo "Independent"
broltcr , who has boon cutting a pretty wldo
swath , recently , on a "system. " The crowd
got ' 'onto the deal , " mid the result was the
pnti'haso of a line of probably half n million
bushels for account of the "system" at lo
loss. This was the joke of the day. It was
thought , at Ilrst , that this might have caused
the advance , but the market did not go
buck , mid the conclusion was readied th.it it
was only an Incident and a small ono at that ,
Instead of nn event. So much for the
"Joke. " The truth serins to bo that the
latest field advices do not como up. to the ex
pectations o ( tlio believers In a
phenomenal crop. Aside from the
possibilities of serious dnmngo to
wheat In Michigan , northern Indiana and
Ohio , from the recent frost , advices from
Indiana. Illinois , Ohio , Kentucky and Kan
sas , Indicate a decidedly "spotted" condition.
"Wheat Is not showing up as well nnywhero
DS was hoped for. In abort , tno promise of
twenty or thirty days ago is not being main
tained. The feeling that perhaps the crop
prospects have been discounted , Is growing ,
mid offerings nro consequently not heavy.
No concerted or special effort xvus made ,
to-day , to bull the market , so far as could
bo learned. July wheat opened at 70) c ,
sold oft J < c , and started up , not stopping
until 77jijC ? was touched. The advance was
lapid asd there was a largo trading on the
jtjcent. A reaction to about 77c followed ,
nd the scalpers looked for n further re
action , but the market hung linn. A larco
business was done during the day within the
rangeof 77 > f@77 c. Once the price touched
77 c. During the last hour the market
started down several times , but was brought
upvith a Jerk and closed steady at 7"j c ,
or Jfc bettor than yesterday. December
wheat ranged from 73Kc , at the opening ,
Sown to 75jj'c ? | , and up to 70J < c , closing at

Sic. The average Improvement ns compared
With yesterday , was % c to Jfe.
The corn receipts wore nbout fifty cars in
/xcess of yesterday's estimates , besides the
Arrivals by canal , which did not c-nter Into
1 the calculations. The weather , was of tli/3
most encouraging kind , from an agricultural
joint of view , and for to morrow : 1,090 cars
was the number calculated for this point.
1'ho clearances from the three Atlantic ports
-cro light , but the shipments from hero
' Were heavy , though they nro now falling
3ousidorably behind the receipts. Tbo lirm-

stronger feeling which prevailed in the mar

towards the close of the market. Shippers
reduced their orders for the cash article and
the shorts appeared to have bought early all
that the present outlook warranted. The

Oats were nearly steady , and only fairly
nctlvo , largely m the way of changing Juno
Into juoro deferred deliveries , with July at
2fC ) premium. The month named sold largely

averaged stronger , with good Inquiry for
No. 2 at " 2)c , and some sales wore recorded
as high an ic. Buynrs appeared for No. 2
roKulnr at 32 > o , while cars to go to store
sold at 22c. Uccolpts wore greater than
expected by some 40 cars , while the move
ment of round lots was not sunlclontly largo
to add much strength to the market. The in
creased selling , lutorcaused a weaker closing
all around.
Provisions wore again higher ; the advanc
ing tendency shown yesterday was assisted
materially by small receipts and the rlso in
hop * , and In the general trailo something of
a boom was experienced. This upward turn ,
however , failed to command sufficient sup
port to maintain it throughout the session.
During the lust hour or so tbero were mnro
teller * than buyers , and prices fell away con-
rldornbly , though the closings showed a sub-
ttantlal Improvement. In pork the dny'a net
tpproclution amounted from 20c to 2J ] c , and
ul lard uud short ribs from Sl c to 7 > io.

In butchnrs' stock , cows gome nt $2.003,2 , ,
nnd bulls nt $1.00@2.VO. There wore very
few stackers or feeders hero , nnd not unough
to mnku any test of the market. Some pretty
good cattle brought $ ' 1.00 and '

both light nnd heavy hops nnd the bulk of the
offerings were soon disposed of. the market
belnp brisk nt the advance. Almost every
thing sold nt n rnngo of $4.20 ( 4.2. , the best
of the light hogs golup nt $ . .2.nnd n good
many of the heavy nnd heavy mixed nt $4.20.
After the light hog buyers bad 111 led their
orders it was not qulto so easy to got the
price for that kind of hogs , nnd the market
cased off nnd wns slow for n tlmo on nil
grades , the buyers offering only S4.20 for
what wns loft. In the end the buyers took
evorytlng at about th& morning prices , the
market closing early.

There was not n load of sheep on sale.
Two single decks were received , but they
were consigned direct to n packer. The mar
ket was nominally steady , thcro being a good
demand.
