Mr. .Tupp made this flattering speech
In his city counting house , when his
clerks had all dltappoarcd for what they
considered worth calling dinner , and
the eminent tallow merchant was
alone with his nophow. Uncle Jupp
had a shrewish wife nnd n couple
of children , n portcntlously ugly pair ,
who. of course , would Inherit his
money , Ho was not n bad sort of man ,
though his brutal rudeness in address
ing mo was Invariable. Ilia chocks ,
howovcr , somewhat softened It. But
ho was of an irritable temper nnd of
city notions. 1 , on the contrary , was

admitting it , but on the principle of
letting mine uncle run himself down. I
had in my pocket his check for my
usual quarterly allowance , and it was
the increased amount thereof , from
various little extra necessities which a

had led to this oration. I did not ob
ject to listen. It was a warm day , and

if a fellow is good-looking , graceful in

over a really unsurpassable bottle of

dition. It seemed a grcnt pity that n
man with my personal gifts should bo
the victim of matrimony ; but oven that
resource was better than existing if
men can exist in the proper sense of
the word on 100 a year. And 1 was
in debt. It's all very well , but you
can't expect n man of society to look
at thcso things like a grubby man of
business. I hnd expensive tnstes , nnd
ought to have had Mr. Junp's money.
Ho had nono. except for vulgarly showy
furniture and old port. But I hnd vnri-
ous ones , and , in fact , I was not going
to stint myself in the cultivation of my
refined tastes on account of mere sordid
llgurcs. So , on the whole , I fancied my
uncle's vulgar suggestions were worth
considering. No doubt such a man as
I could easily marry money , but it must
bo a good round sum. And I must
have a proper amount settled on myself ,
nnd unrestrained liberty of action.
And nftor such a marriage , as there
would bo no need to cultivate him any
more , I should most decidedly drop the
acquaintance of Mr. Jupp and his fam
ily.Well
Well , the programme fixed for the
next day wan carried out completely.
Uncle Jupp called and paid my rent nnd
various other liabilities not , of course ,
like a gentleman , but grumbling in n
most ill-bred way at the amount. Then
ho wont with mo to Waterloo station
and personally conducted mo to my car
riage for Southampton. I believe ho
would have liked to have put mo under
the guard's charge , to BOO that I ar
rived at Cowos. And as the train
moved elf ho roared out he'd "written
to Plum ! "
I arrived at Cowesnnd an obese , short
man , in n dreadful suit of tweed , asked
mo if I was Jupp's ' nephew the moment
1 sot foot on the pier , adding , with a
chuckle , that ho know mo bv my de
scription whether this was compli
mentary or not I did not care to decide.
"So you're hero for a wifoV'lie began.
"I never beat about the bush , and Tom
Jupp and I know each other. I've got
ono looked out for you. No time like
the present. I'll call at your "otol In
'alf an hour and take you round to Mrs.
Clogson's daughter's , got JC4,000 ( ) , and
alnl so bad-looking by candle-light. "
I got rid of this impetuous old man ns
soon as I could , and dined at my hotel ;
but before I could pottle down to dessert
ho bolted in , wouldn't drink any claret ,
and said wo could got colloo at Violet
Villa. So , much against my will. I ac
companied Mr. Plum to a pretty house
near the sea. The grounds were very
well platted , the nouso apparently very
comfortable. As wo walked up the little
drive , Mr. Plum said , sotto voce :
"Mrs , Clogson's doosid sharp ; don't
want Ady to marry any ono under a
baronet , and bho's always on the look
out for follors without cash. Butnovcr
you mind make play with your good
\ooks. \ Ady's got a will of her own.
Ana she's seen the world. Her father
was consul at several places in the
La van t , and his brother was in the cur
rant line there and loft his nicco his
fortune. Hero wo are. "
lie rang , and in a minute or two a re
markably neat and pretty servant smil
ingly opened the door , as if Mr. Plum
were a familiar visitor. Wo entered a
pretty hall nnd then a charming draw
ing room , where sat a portly lady with
keen dark eyes which looked through
very forbidding spectacles. Mr. Plum
introduced me , and I received a by no
means gushing reception ; but I was
opposite a mirror and my own relloction
consoled mo. Then Mr. Plum bogaiijas
I thoughtwith rather forced bonhomie ,
to talk to the lady about the various
local matters , carefully avoiding any
mention of Miss Clogsonwho.it seemed ,
from an allusion casually made , was out
at n garden party. By and by wo left ,
Mrs. Clegbon scrumming me in n most
peculiar manner as I wished her pood-
by. Outside , old Plum chuckled. "Sho
guesses what you're after , " ho said ;
"she can smell a rat any where clover
woman. "
I said nothing ; really these vulgar
commercial people have n hypnotizing
effect on me. As wo turned a corner
we mot a young lady attended by a
hobbledehoy in a cricket suit. This
was , I supposed , Ada Clcgson. So it
proved.
"Ah , Miss Ady , " reared my compan
ion , " 'ow are you ? Lot mo introduce
Mr. Reginald Losterloy , the nephew of
a very old chum o' mine. " She bowed
abruptly , 1 with my usual graceful ease ,
nnd 1 took a good look at my future
wifo. Good eyes , dark and keensallow
complexionnose and lips too coarsehair
ilully and black ; on the whole not good-
lookingovon if she were passable by
candlelight. Why cannot the heiresses
bo pretty girls ? This is a problem
worth studying.
Wo turned and walked back , reentered -
tored the house on her invitation , and
found Mrs. Clogson nn iceberg. But
her daughter was evidently mistress ,
nnd her mamma had to tolerate roe. I
could see , for I am experienced in such
matters , Ada was much impressed by
my looks and manners. I narrated my
London experiences and acquaintances
for the most part truthfully. I glanced
at my foreign tours nnd adventures
wholly untruthfully. On the whole , I
am of opinion I behaved with much
greater tact than the prejudiced Uncle
Jupp would ever have credited mo with.
For a first Interview I , as Mr. Plum as
sured me when I came out , nuido play
considerably. And I certainly thought
I deserved well of my uncle.
The days pasaod on , nnd my intimacy
at Violet villa became groat. That pretty
ty servant , who I could BOO was as ap
preciative as her young mistress of my
good looks pity the pair couldn't ex
change faces welcomed me with a
smile ns if I were nn accredited inmate
of the house. Ada was always glad to
see mo. Only Mrs. Clegson remained
nnthawcd. When I lool'cd at her I
always felt she was likely , if any oneto
bo responsible for the nH'air
"being blundered , " us Uncle Jupp
once or twice wrote mo brief notes to
beware of. Another thing was , she had
some sort of control , within limits ,
though I never could quite toll what ,
over her daughter's marriage. She
took care never to allow a totc-a-toto
between mo and Ada ; and she had all
the letters taken up to her room in a
pobt-bag in the morning , of which bag
lic Kept the key , while nt all other
hours she always watched for the post
man , so that the opportunities of speak-
in jr mv mind were always dllllcult.
Well , thus things wont on , when
there arrived on a visit a nephew ol
Mrs. ClugBon , a clean-shaven , sallow ,
hawk-eyed man , who was in some big
company ns general manager , nnd , I
have no doubt , had "made his pile" out
of shareholders. Anyhow , ho hadsomo
money , so the old lady liked him ,
though I believe Ada only treated him
as a cousin. Ho wab an ugly dog , with
the woriit cut clothes I over saw , and a
sharp , brusque , energetic way of mov
ing which I hated. I always did ad-
in fro the Neapolitan Jazzuroni more
than any other class. But , to come to
the point , ns Mr. Jupp in always bother
ing mo to do , old Plum said he thought
my chances wouldn't ' bo improved b >
Nod Cutely being down at Cowes , anil
advised mo to strike while the Iron wna
'ot. But wus it hotV I hnd
never got so far ns the brink of a
proposal nud I waa a very bad hand at
naklng nny formal speech whatovor.
Jesldes , how could n follow do it when
, ho girl's mother always watched mo
iko a cat ? It was all very well for old
Tupp to write to mo ( of course old Plum
mist go and interfere ) and uully mo for
'dawdling , " nnd ndjuro mo not to make
mother blunder , but ho hadn't to do the
) uslncss I hnd. J woul there at nil
, lmos nnd always found Cutely there. I
tried to get the protty. mnid to give n
loto to Ada , but Mrs. Clegson nlwnys
same into the hull and the maid waa ov-
dontly afraid of her , and so I hung
ibout nnd wondered what was the best
, hlng to do. Meanwhile it got expen
sive , and the hotel bills were diminish-
.ng ray money. At last I determined to
write to Ada ; T had squeezed her hand
, ho night before nnd she had not
seemed affronted nay , I think she re
turned the pressure so matters scorned
ripe for declaring myself. I resolved
to write , and by the aid of a "Letter
writer , " which I gave a shilling for in
Die town , I put a most moving nnd pa
thetic declaration together. This done ,
[ debated how to got It into Ada's
liands ; the post was impracticable , the
( irmly servant afraid. Just then a
Imppy thought occurred. There was n
Lnitehor's boy who rode a bay pony in a
most funoua manner , whom 1 had fre
quently mot in the drive , returning
from calling for orders. Ho had al
ways touched his forelock to mo ,
ind seemed abnormally sharp ; ho
should bo my messenger. So I
waylaid him the next morn
ing and stopped him : I hold up half-a-
crown , and explained that somehow or
other i loft the details to him-r-ho waste
to slip this note into Miss Ada's hands
unsoon. With a joyous grip , as ho
[ tockoted the half-crown , ho said ho'd
llnd some way to do it to that nobody
should see , and oh" ho rodo. I wontback
to my hotel , wrote a letter to Uncle
Jupp , saying how things were progress
ing , and then wont for a sail , as I
wished the day to elapse ere calling to
know my fate. But there could bo llttio'
doubt ; Ada had shown In various trilling
ways her preference for mo , and , nftor
nil , such a really handsome husband
was a cheap ornament even at 40,000.
My thoughts pleasantly dallied with the
future , as I pictured a lite of artistic
ottbo and luxury , and I triumphed in
anticipation over Uncle Jupp and his
brutal personalities. In this matter , at
any rate , I would prove to him I know
how to bring an affair to a successful
conclusion.
The evening arrived , ns lovely a sum
mer's evening as over could bo wished
for by a spooning pair , and I dressed
myself most fascinatingly for Violet
Villa. 1 went up there very leisurely ,
and on my way was joined by Mr. Plum ,
who congratulated mo much on the
progress 1 had made , and on my clever
ness in outwitting the "Old Duchess , "
has called bore.
"Your dodge with the butcher's boy
proves you ain't such a fool as Jupp
thinks you , " ' he said generously.
"I am much obliged to you , " said I
dryly.
"Wellyou know I didn't myself think
you sharp enough to got over Mother
Clegson's wariness. She hates the idea
of any feller , who's only got lardy-dardy
ways and a good looking simper'anting
after Ady , " rejoined Mr. Plum , while I
inwardly resolved that , once the prize
was secured , I would eliminate him nnd
all my uncle's crow from my list of ac
quaintances.
At length we came in sight of Violet
Villa , and Plum commenced some of his
vulgar facetiiu , as comparing mo to n
man in doubt whether ho was to bo
"turned oil" or reprieved , etc. , etc. At
last he condescended to listen to my re
quest ( which was an additional proof , in
his eyes , of my newly acquired" smart
ness1' ) that ho would decoy the old lady
into the conservatory , by preceding mo ,
and thus facilitating my momentous in
terview with Ada.
"A very good action"ho said , "andI
really think this time your uncle can't
but ' scored . "

Thus conversing wo nearcdtho house ,
when Mr. Plum went on in front , and
entering the gate crossed the lawn ,
and , with the familiarity of an old
friend , entered by the drawing-room
window. I gave him time enough to
decoy the old girl into the conservatory
and then marched up the drive , feeling
pretty sure nil was successful. I rang
tno bell. No response. I rang again ,
and the pretty maid opened it ; unusu
ally smartly dressed and good-looking
she seemed , and colored most vlyidlyon
seeing mo. I looked at her admiringly ,
wishing that Miss Clegson was as
pretty , and she looked silently and with
borne agitation at me.
And then suddenly she throw herself
into my arms , exclaiming : "Yes , dar
ling , yes ! That is the answer ! "
"What the deuce do you moan ? " I
said , struggling with my fair and some
what weighty burden. "Why , the
girl's gene mad ! "
"Oh , no , dearest , I'm not mad , and I
love you with all my heart ! " and she
pressed a kiss on my lips that sounded
like a pistol stiot.
At this moment the drawingroom door
opened and out came Mrs. Clogson , who
stood potrilicd. "Weil , upon my word ,
sir ! " she said , with a spiteful triumph
In her tone , "but it only justifies iny
opinion of you all along , "
"What the duce d'ye moan , young
Lostorlyi1" said Mr. Plum. "This is anew
now gnmo , and not fair to mo , you
know. "
And Miss Clogson said with bitter
scorn : "And this is your choice , sir'i1"
While Mr. Cutely eald nothing , but
showed his tooth like a dentist's model.
Meanwhile ray fair companion , still
clinging to mo , looked , with pride in
her port , dolinnco in her eye , on the as
sembled company. Then I tried to ox-
plain. And Miss Clcgson shrieked with
horror at the mention of the butcher
boy. Frantically freeing myself from
the soubrette , I bald , looking daggers
.at the old lady , "I nskod the butcher ,
there being no other way , to give my
note to Miss Ada.1'
"And I got it , dear , " murmured the
pretty servant.
"YouV" said I , "but i meant aren't
you Mibs Ada ClcgsonV" I baid confused
ly to tno young lady , when the old ono
acidly answered :
"My daughter's name , sir , is Ilnidoo ,
from her poor father's eastern post. Oh ,
had ho soon this day ! "
'
"Yes , I told you' , " said the vulgar
Plum , "Ady you honrd mo right
enough. "
"Well " the
, perhaps , interposed
grinning Cutely , "we'd bettor lenvo
this gentleman nnd Miss Ada to settle
matters , " and the quartet wont back
into the drawintr room.
Then wo two explained , I and Ada
Nlbson which was the pretty servant's
nnmo. Then , on my disavowing my
letter , there was another scone , She
had thrown over the grocer's young
man Jor me ; I was a cruel man , and so
on ; and sho'd trot my letter , and she'd
too a lawyer , etc. , etc. And then , half
frantic , I fled to my hotel "to drown my
sorrows in the bowl. "
Of course I hnd to expend eonio of
my balance in compensating Ada. Of
course Cutely proposed , nnd was ao-
c.opted. Of course Uncle Jupp behaved
HKU a mail hippopotamus , nnd furiously
declared I could go on blundering
through lifo in my own way. But ,
really , do you think it was my fault or
