sample wheat market Is active , nnd a largo
aggregate business Is being transacted in a
hand to mouth way. - Cash wheat commands
n good round premium over the futures , the
prlco being based strictly on milling merit.
The crop nnd weather conditions , the quiet
nnd dull cables , and the domestic specula
tive Inactivity have generated n very gen
eral feeling of boarlshncis among the runic
nnd file of rcpulnr or professional operators.
The belief In lower prices Is far more pop
ular than It was when the market wns lOo
higher. This Is , duo , In a great , part prob
ably , to the fact that the crop Is getting well
nlong townru the safety point , though nb-
Boluto safety can not bo assured until the
harvest Is over and grain Is "In out of the
wot. " "Scenery , " however , Is glorious , and
the prospects invite boundless short selling.
The only thing that upparcntly stands In the
way of CO-ccnt wheat Is the small stock of
old wheat , visible and Invisible , nnd the
fact that this wheat Is having an
nctual ossh viiluo for shipping
and milling purposes. Why this
should bo so Is not plain to the chronic boars ,
who have no use for wheat except to fill
contracts with. A cloud no bigger than a
man's hand has Just appeared to disturb the
restful consciousness of perfect safety with
which the crowd continues to sell wheat up
hill and down. The temperature in the whole
Rocky mountain rnngo as far south as the
Klo Uramlo , ranges from cool to freezing ,
and the cold area la spreading down over the
eastern foot hills and across the contiguous
plains in a queer way. Up In the northwest
this climatic condition is not so marked ns
further south. Fargo reports "cool nnd
clear" ; Cheyenne , "freezing , " and Denver ,
"snow" ; while at Santa Fc the thermometer
registers SO0 lower than at Chicago.
Nebraska and portions of Kansas are re
porting too much ruin und operators in these
localities are "covering" corn and wheat In
this market. The opening , rnngo here to-day
wns 81Kc for Mny , Sic for Juno , and TOXc
for July. The latter month advanced to
77 c , nnd sold off to TOJ o , with Hutchison a
moderate seller nt 77c. The market advanced
ngnln to 778c , when Hutchtnsou again "let
the boys have what they wanted. " The
market gradually worked down to 7t ! > tfc.
which point was touched Just once for a
moment , shortly before 11 o'clock. There
after it ranged up to 7GJ c , and toward the
cud nn Improved demand carried prices to
above 77c. Hutchlnson again turned seller
und sold a good line of stuff. The market
yielded slightly but recovered with
n display of considerable spirit. Quito
a peed business was dona durinir
the last ten minutes at 77e , and 77@77J c.
The last quotation was 77/V@77e , which
wus the outside price of the day. Juno
4 > JHeat ranged from 81c , nt the opening , to
BOo nnd back to Sic , where it closed. May
rested at Sitfc , and September nt 74c. The
final quotations averaged nbout # o better
than .yesterday. There was a fulr nmount of
activity In the cnrly dealings , but , during
the last two hours of the session , dullness
was the feature nnd weakness was the pre
vailing feeling In the minds ot speculators.
Cash corn suffered most , losing about } o
since yesterday's close and futures declined ,
also , about } c. The weather nnd the re
ceipts were the controlling influences in corn
and both were inimical to the interests of the
bulls. The receipts were not appreciably
heavier than yesterday's estimates , but a
realization of these was a sufllclently bearish
feature. Then , again , for to-morrow 043
cars were promised from to-dny's Indications ,
o that the previously expressed opinion of
the bears that the receipts would materially
increase as soon as the spring woric on
the farms was over appeared to
bo having its realization. The Liv
erpool , market was quoted as tending
down for American corn. With the source
of supply showing such symptons of weak
ness as have been seen hero , It would bo sur
prising to receive anything but bearish dis
patches from. Euro no. The quality of the
present receipts Is seen In the closeness In
prices between the different grades ; nnd
their excellent conditions nro reflected In the
heavy proportion grading No. 2.
Oats were quiet , though , In the aggregate ,
a , fair business was scored. The eastern
markets were reported bettor , and there was
a good Inquiry hero for cash oats for early
shipments. May was changed into Juua at
oven figure , wltti the latter In fair favor nt
EUJi'or and split above. Prices nvorngod
nearly steady nil nround , with July the fav-
oritc < selling in some Instances nt
Vo lower than yesterday's closo.
Deferred futures ruled dull and easy. The
receipts were liberal , but this was offset by
the increased withdrawals from store , 203,000
bushels being taken smco the previous re
port. No. 3 oats to go to store sold at 3-c ,
with round lots at nbout May prices.
The provision trade recovered a little from
Its late depression. A material fulling off In
the receipts of hogs , accompanied by an ad
vance in the same , changed the color of the
bear side somewhat. It was certainly less
attractive , and when buyers made their bids
the product fulled to coino out with any free
dom. Henco. though the demand was far
from active , there were more buyers than
oilers , nnd prices moved up a few notches
all nround. Uusod on. yesterday's closings ,
pork sustained an Improvement , of 15o to 'Mo ,
lurd of fie , and short ribs of 7 > o.

$3.55@3.75. Cow stuff sold nt about steady
prices , but very common butcho's' stock sells
hardly so well ns n week ago. The demand
Is mostly for good fat cows nnd heifers. The
bulk ot the cows sold at 3.50 < i$3.00 , und n
bunch of cholco little heifers brought (3.15.
Only n few bulls were offered on the market ,
nnd they brought $2.2.3.00. A few mUlvo
feeders and stocHcrs were offered on the
market , nnd sold at about steady prices. A
few stockora were reported sold nt $3.00.

The hog mnrxet , which has been going
down nt a rapid rate for some days , took n
turn In the other direction , to-day , much to
tbo relief of the sollinu interests. The buy
ers were not long in effecting n clearance ,
plekfng up everything nt SI.07 } < ( Sl.l7 > f. The
advance , which amounted to about , 5c , was
mostly on the heavy nnd mixed loads , which
sold , yesterday , largely nt ? 1.05 , the top being
2J c higher than.vestcrduy. There was n
good feeling prevalent on the market , and n
demand for u peed many more hok's than
there were on sale , the market closing strong
at the advance.

Sheep must bo pretty well cleaned out of
Nebraska , If the receipts at this market are
any Indication of the supply. Ono double
neck of sheen was received , but It wns con-
sliriicd direct to a packer , nnd there were
none on sale. Prices remain nbout the same ,
with the demand good for desirable muttons.
