Propositions favoring the location of the etato Masonic homo for dependent masons nnd their families must bo submitted by the various cities and towns bidding for the homo , to Mr. George W , Llninger , chairman of the state commlttoo , not later than Satur day , May 25. Between flfty and ono hun dred occupants will take possession when the building is completed. Omnhn , thus for , has taken no steps to secure the homo , and Mr. Llnlngor said to the reporter that ho thought It would bo wise for the citizens , outsldn of the Masonic fraternity , to got to gether and appoint n committee to confer with the committees already named by the various lodges in the city on the subject. Messrs. L. H. ICorty , William H. Bowen nnd Judge Anderson nro members of the local committee whom , ho said , It was advisable to sco. Ho suggested that Byron Rccd nnd same others of the largo Inside property own- crs make n tender of n block near the center of the city , as that would bo more acceptable than ten blocks on the outskirts. It was not good policy to Isolate the inmates of this In stitution , which will bo peopled largely by children , who should bo situated to avail themselves of the better educational facili ties to bo found in n great population center. "H is the Intention , " Mr. Llninger con tinued , "to include In the education of the children , muslo nnd other accomplishments which will lit them for any walk In llfn. You might sny that the homo , in the cvont of Its establishment hero , would bo as creditable to Omnha as Hrowncll hnll. "I have received from real estate men m Lincoln nn offer of ten or fifteen thousand dollars worth of real estate , nnd my reading of the state papers shows that Mllfordris about to offer eighty acres and the largo san itarium recently built by the citizens of that place. This last offer I roirnrd ns very liberal. It Is not to bo expected that the bids for the location will pllo in until about. May ! ! . " > , nnd It Is desirable that Omaha bestir herself If she expects to .secure the homo. "There nro about forty thousand dollars available in the Masonic fund for the estab lishment of this building , and subscriptions nro constantly coming in , BO 'that assurance is furnished that the homo will have nn nmplo building fund with which to cover nuy slto offered and accepted. " ' ' N 10thOmnha Taxidormlstcatal'g'o,815 , THE ART KXIIIIHT10N. A Glnnc2 nt Rome of the Gcma on the Gullcry Walls. The visitor to the art exhibition now in progress ut the now Brown building , Six teenth nnd Dougl.is , enters on the second lloor a spacious nnd magnlllccntly lighted room , filled with a sauntering throng of spec tators. Rows of seats conveniently nrrango d extend down the entire length * of the flno room , nnd tall , graceful tropical plants beau tify every nook nnd corner : Along the cast and north wall , from lloor to celling , are hung the oil paintings of the exhibit , some of them worthy of similar places on the walls of the great European galleries , nnd all of them a revelation to the disbe liever in a western art center. Along the south and a portion of tno west walls nro many gems in water colon , , crnyon nnd pen and ink , while hero and there in nil parts of the room nro glass cases tilled "nth beauti ful specimens of china painting nnd pottery. In the decorations of the room , the number and merit of the contributions , nnd m every respect , the affair is a complete surprise. The success of the exhibition nnd the re ception it is meeting from the public is cer tainly most encouraging to the projectors and all others interested in the building up of nn art center in the west. Its permanence is assured , and the ono thing needful is the hearty encouragement und co-operation of the public. The attendance yesterday was largo throughout the day , and , on tha whole , the merit of the exhibits is roncoded to bo greater by 25 per cent than these ot six months uiro. Ono of the most conspicuous , ns well as most deserving , is Mr. Arthur Rotlicry's "Old Hunter" (138. ( ) The artist has infused into the features of the old man great force nnd character , and in the drawing and color ing the piece is altogether most creditable. No. 3tf , "Kitty's Breakfast , " has attracted a great deal of attention , as have also his other pieces , "A Bunch of California Grapes" nnd a portrait. This artist's repu tation 1ms been made in his crayon work , nnd his branching out into oil wont about six mouths ago was not altogether unex pected. | Ono of tno paintings which is sure to attract attention , is "Evening on Rock River , Illinois , " by H. H. Bngg , of Lincoln. The harmony of warm tints , the blending of the gold , sun lit rocks with the blue of the water and the green of the foliage is admirably main tained. Miss Tcana MuLennon , a recant accession to the art circles of this city , presents ono of the best sketches in the studies of still lifo on exhibition. It is called the "Lunch of German Students. " On n rough table , on which is spread a delicate napkin , nro grouped a quaint Dutch pitcher , against whidit stands a foaming beer mug , while around Ho untastcd biowu bread , pretzels and cheeso. Ono of the finest pieces of drawing Is Mr , F. BritnsUoll's still life. The Dottles nnd glasses of drinkables , the giapes and a smoking cigar are nil perfect in their way. Ada K. Fnrnsworth , of Corning , In. , has among other contributions a little gem ticketed "sold. " The subject is a pair of cocoauuts , perfect in coloring and drawing , Mrs. F. B. Mumaughs' numerous fruit pieces are nil bcatiful in coloring true to na ture. ture.Near the center of the east wall is n rather largo largo piece catalogued "Moonlight on the Camp River. " The visitor wUl do well to stand and study it a little. 'Under the gloomy shadows of some sombre hemlock trees gleams the red light of a fisherman's torch , and nlong the glimmering water which seems to almost dance In the moon light , is a pathwav of light leading back into the misty hills in the background. It is by Mis. M. S. Silkworth , of this city. H , A. Smith , the Eleventh street commis sion merchant , has found timoto paint on a panel a dead dove with n beautiful bur nished breast which is ono of the most ad mired among the oils , Miss E. J. Sluiho is another Omaha artist whose work especially deserves commenda tion. These , of course , are only n few of the many creditable oils to say nothing of the othej departments , and to single tticm out is almost to do an injustice to the others. The exhibition will bo open through the week and until next Monday night.
