5RE.1 The wheat mnrkot ruled heavy toy -
y , nnd prices averaged lower than ycstcr-
Spcculntlvo business was light , nnd
bows of nn Influential character was scarce.
Iho market opened lower on the whole list
Df futures , nnd rallies wcro Infrequent nnd
'not lasting ; oven cash wheat was oft and the
nativity In demand , which hn been ono of
Its recent features , seems to hnvo been
Suited appreciably. In brief , the whole situ
ation looked heavy nnd weak. Soft snows
In the northwest , nnd general rains pretty
much everywhere , were looked ujion ns
being most bcncflcal to the growing crops.
Tills Is Just what the farmers have boon
clamoring for , in any event , and It stands to
reason thnt the rains were what they
wanted nnd needed In their business. Re
ports contlnuo to como In freely from all
quarters Indicating a streaked or mixed con
dition of wheat , spring and winter.
But , on the whole , the proscect must hnvo
been materially improved during the past
thrco or four days ; sucn , nt least , is the pop
ular impression , nnd the sentiment scorns to
bo shifting around again to the bear side.
July wheat opened nt 78 ? c , rallied MO ,
settled nirain to 78tfc , advanced to 78X@
78c , fell back to 7S c , nnd , during the
greater part of the session , the price hung
between 78Jc nnd 78Jr Toward the close ,
however , the market took on a complexion of
unmlstnkablo weakness , nnd a sharp decline
marked the closing half hour , or rather clos
ing fifteen minutes. No specific explanation
could bo offered for the break , beyond the
fact that there "wore no supporting orders.
Pnrdridgo , Fraloy and other largo local nnd
outside bears wcro given the credit of being
good buyers early , nnd to their purchases
was attributed much of the firmness dis
played. When they were through the
market was unequal to the task
of standing up alono. It was in good shape
for the raid , nnd the crowd broke through
the thin crust of bull sentiment. Prices set
tled to 7SXc , hung them a few minutes , and
then started off , going to 77c , which was
the closing quotation. The bulk of the busi
ness of the day was concentrated in the final
thirty minutes of the session. The decline
In May and Juno was less than In later
futures. May closed nt S3 c , nnd Juno at
82c , a shrinkage of &o and Xo respect
ively. July lost % o as compared with yes
terday's closing. September left off at 75c ,
and December at TGJ c.
The receipts of corn wore about as esti
mated yesterday , including the receipts by
canal. The heavy proportion of No. 2 rather
strengthened than weakened the market ,
from the fact of its being delivered on pre
vious trades for tills month , thus restricting
the offerings on cash. Liverpool was quoted
long , but unshaken in price. Exports wcro
fair , nnd the demand from local shippers
was good In all positions and for nil grades.
Speculative dealings wore on n limited scale
nnd principally local in their character.
Some purchases of Juno and July made yes
terday by n heavy local operators wore sold
out to-day nt about % a advance on the cost.
OatR were quiet , though , in the aggregate ,
a liberal speculative business was done at a
fractional advance. The opening was 'rf@
Jfo higher , duo partly to reports of colder
weather In the crop districts , and fair buy
ing was noted with July as a favorlto. Sell
ing orders wcro not plentiful , and the month
naJBCil advanced to 23 > ffc , or % c ubovo yos-
"lerday's close. This called out tin increased
clling , with a partial reaction following.
May sold up to 23o nnd Jnne to 23 @S3" c ,
while long futures were neglected. The re
ceipts exceeded the estimate by forty-eight
cars , but only 20 per cent passed into con
tract grades , and the withdrawals were re
duced to 153,800 bushols. No. oats to good ,
were quoted at QU ( % 33 ! c.
Provisions continue to bo affected unfavor
ably by hog marxctlng. The receipts of
Block at this and other packing centers again
exceeded expectations to-day , and , as prices
for the same declined 60 or more , the aver
age product suffered another bearish turn.
A lower opening , followed by castor prices
ubscquontly , was the universal rule , and
all around the closings showed n marked
shrinking from yesterday's last quotations.
In pork the decline experienced reached 23 ®
In lard 7 c , and In short ribs 7@lOc.

TUB UKH.I CATTLE. The mnrkot to-day ,
notwithstanding the liberal supplies , was
slow to open , and trading was anything but
brisk ; nevertheless the sellers found an outlet -
lot for their choice light steers at former
prices , but later there occurred a slight shadIng -
Ing of values. Notwithstanding that the
bulk of beef steers on sale changed hands nt
between $3.80 nnd tl.25 , there were many
loads In tbo pens nt the close of the market
that had not received even the courtesy of a
bid , and it Is a difficult matter to quote the
market at the finish other than that conces
sions wore granted by ttio salesmen as an in
ducement for an outlet. Of Texans there
wore eighty loads , or about 2,000 head. Na
tive cows and bulls , owing to liberal and free
receipts of southwestern range cattle , are
not selling so well of late , and are on a down
turn as to value. There wore plenty of
itock and feeding cattle on sale to-day , but
unfoi Innately there wcro few buyers.

The Now York Metal Market of May 11
prints the following cablegrams :
LONDON.
TIN At last there has been n turn
upward , albeit on a comparatively quiet
market , and speculators for n r'so
who Invested n week ago , hnvo had nn
opportunity to rcnllzo profits. The opening
on Monday was only steady nt n slight ad
vance from tlio preceding business day , and
prices reacted again to b9 17s Od spot , 90
10s forward nt the close , cash tin losing 10s
moro the next day ; but values began to re
cover Wednesday nfternoon.gainlng 5s for the
day , nnd yesterday wcro quite strong at nn
advance of 10a@17sCd on each 'change ; the
closing figures being 91 nnd 91 15s. This
mornlne there was another rlso of 103gl5s ( ,
but spot reacted on late 'chango to 91rt ( > 91
5s , forward prompts holding comparatively
steady nt . 92.
Corrnu So much uncertainty clouds the
situation that curators hnvo been very re
luctant to enter upon fresh engagements.
After a rumor had spread that all the Paris
negotiations hud como to naught , It was
given out with much show of authority that
the various parties to Iho conference had
actually signed nn agreement , under which
American "producers nro to limit their ex-
portatlons to Europe , nil other mines to re
strict their product and existing stocks to bo
withheld from immediate pressure on the
market. This report has been generally dis
credited ; yet prices of bars have been slowly
creeping upward since Tuesday , when n loss
of 5s on that , nnd lC < a > 15son the previous
day had reduced otho value to 3S 5s. Tno
next forenoon 38 10s was current , forward
prompts improving 5s moro at late 'change ,
nnd yesterday were bid up 10s ut each ses
sion without Undine sellers , until the closing
quotation reached 39 15s. A reaction of
5s was noted at to-day's early 'change , and
the closing was still easier nt 39.
ANTIMONY Is again 1 higher this week ,
Hallett's being now quoted at 50.
