THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY. MAY 1889 Soiling Eflccto of the Recent Rnlns Not Very Qront. WHEAT ADVICES CONFLICTING. Cnllfornln Growers on the Anxious Bciu New York Supposed to Do "Working" ChlcnRo-Corii Ilnldn Its Own , CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS. CHICAGO , May 10. [ Special Telegram to Till ! BEB.I The wheat market had n.lamo Opening , follow.cd by a season of weakness , tvhlcti , In turn , was succeeded by a full ro- : ovcry and Knln upon the previous best prices ttf the session. The rain area continues to move Blowly eastward , ana has , at lust , crossed the Mississippi , No general rains have yet been reported , but wo seem to have entered upon a period of showers. The ihowcrs uro good as fur as they go , but they are n poor substitute for sonking rains , ivhcro the ground Is very dry , as was the inso from the oxtrouio northwest to the Ohio river. Ninety Jlvo per cent of the crop reports from the winter wheat sections Indi cate u pressing and present need of ruin , and loincthlng more than "apprehensions" of flanmgo to crops by drouth. The rainfall In the northwest caused only a slight Inter ruption In the How of unfavorable crop i reports from that section , though It must bo admitted that spring wheat ad vices are conflicting and confusing to a cer tain extent , ranging as they do from very favorable to very unfavorable. New York reported clearances of only bU.OOO bush els , which are figures that were not in accord with the positive statements inado yester day , that one steamer load of 104,030 bushels lind cleared on Wednesday evening , too la to for the ofllclal returns of that day , which amount would appear In this morning's postings. This tended to intensify the skep ticism engendered by yesterday's mixed ad- cvicos from Now York , and a selling move ment was started , July opened at bOJ4'c , Bold up to 8dc , ana declined under pressure to 70c , with a largo business passing on the break , Hutchlnaon's brokers bought heavily around the bottom , and the market turned up with a considerable show of vitality. The price went back to SOc , dipped once or twice # c , rallied to 80) ) c , inado a feint or two , and then steamed up to 60Jfc. Thin last advance occurred between 112 and 1 o'clock , and had Its origin In u ca blegram that French and other continental hnpbrtes tvcro free buyers of cargoes "oft coast. " There was plenty of wheat for sulo above 80 > < (3 ( , and the market eased off. The local crowd and general public have "loaded up" pretty freely on dry weather , and ex port news , and every little rally evinces a willingness to part with a little property and Vnkc "iiodcrnto profits on Investments. It Is irnfo trading that makes the market narrow nnd keeps it free from violent excitement. California Is getting a little too much of a good thing in the way of rain. It is on the eve ot htirvest out there and wheat grow- urn are on the anxious scat. Operators wheN N derive Inspiration from California and Eu rope wore observed to bo the most liberal buyers to-day. They were mostly short , and their purchases were largely to till contracts , Now York was heavily on both sides of the market. There is n well defined and grow ing suspicion that New York speculators have been "working" Chicago , lately , on padded export news. Should later reports confirm all the recent gossip about "boat loads worked , " New Yorkers can have the laugh again on Chicago disbelievers. Hu mors of all Harts about the government crop report were flying1 around. Sotno had it that "tho advance information" made the bulletin unfavorable , and others who had their car to the tunnel insisted that good -"Ups" to the contrary were out. A report was issued at 4 o'clocir , Washington time , too late for more than mere mention In the later editions of this paperv and too late to have a positive mid definite Influence on the market , except that the con jectural closing quotation for July was 80 @ BO c. May ranged from 84 } c at the open ing to SOc , and closed at the outside. Juno , which opened at 8U c , ranged at S'J < Jf@S4 } c , and closed at the top. Some Inquiry for ppot wheat was reported , and the withdrawal of 25,000 bushels of No. 2 red from store was reported , the sale having been effected at ' over May in store. This wheat goes to Ohio. Local receipts are light , and the same condi tion holds good at otnnr primary points , Min neapolis oxccptcd. Final prices hero show a slight gain over yesterday. There was u weaker feeling at the opening of the corn market. The rain , which was re ported to have been widespread , through not very lipav.v was the chief factor inducmc holders to throw over their prop erty , and encouraging the bears to raid the market. The bearish feeling , with which wheat started in , had likewise a weakening Influence. Receivers were frco sellers of May , early ; and July was also offered in lin- oral quantities early In the session , but the sumo parties wore observed to bo buying , later in the day , The export clearances were heavy , the demand from local shippers was good , and the shipping movement continued to make heavy drafts on stocks In store. From Now Orleans , yesterday , 10,000 bushels wero'oleared for Liverpool and 20,000 bushels for Havre , and New York reported n good demand existing there among buyers for foreign shipment. Tha early weakness had its effect upon the cash market , but nt the close there was a firmness , in sympathy with the strength in futures , and the strengthening later , towards the end , was mainly duo to sympathy with the advancing tendency in wlie.it at that time. The close was Just a trillo better than on the preceding day , May closing at the same us on Thursday , and June nnd July } { c hk'hcr. The estimated receipts for tomorrow row are , -105 cars. Oats were unsettled , with a final advance of % @ % c , after a period of depression in the middle of the duy , The opening was full and stcaay to flam , followed by a later Blight downturn. With a fair demand from the shorts , however , nnd indirectly nym- puthlzlng with the stronutli of wheat , the In creased activity and improvement noted was developed , with Juno and July the favorites. The receipts were larger than expected , but Inspection was poor , with only 30 out of 154 cara grading contract. Withdrawals were Increased to i)0,4t ) > 7 bushuls. May sold uu } $ o to 23c , and Juno to lo lute in the day , with 2 to paid for a quantity of July , After an , curlier trading at ! Si } c , No. 3 oats , to go to Btoro. closed at 2if : o , with sales chiefly by Bnmplc. In provisions , the pit feeling WAS quite nervous. The trade Is still ulTectcd by the recent demonstration by Armour & Cudahy on the long side , and there was not much dis position to-day to do much more than in dulge In Frnlplug. The shorts covered a tittle In tno few depressions witnessed , but with the conerul public trading was slow , Prices , ' owcver , were well supported , and for pork nnd lard the range was a trillo higher than that of .vosterdiiy. Short ribs averaged a nil ado ouster , closing at n decline of EJ c. Lard closed unchanged to Q o higher , and pork at u quotable advance of 5 ( < ClS } u- bivis sroou JMAKKKT. CIMCAIIO. May 10.
