THE llr.B.1 The continuation of rains In the
northwest , and the extension of the rain area
to the south and cast , proved to bo a factor
of Insufficient Importance to cause a break In
wheat , to-day. Towards noon , however , there
was n fairly liberal swing In the pit on the
prospects of general showers throughout Illi
nois und Indiana , the territory that has been
prolific of complaints of drought of late.
New York fired In whole broadsides of expert -
port news. If one-half that is told about
the export business Is true , stocks In
Now York will bo reduced very largely In
the near future , because the wheat reported
"worked fqr export" during the past week
or ten days has not been all shipped , and n
good many people on 'change are disposed to
regard the reports us "faked. " A good part
of the news comes from sources that nro
usually regarded ns trustworthy , and , In the
absence of direct proof to tlio contrary , it
must bo accepted as reliable. The fact *
that cram has not yet cleared can
not bo considered evidence that business
Is not genuine , although it can not
be said that It docs not go out because of the
scarcity of vessel room or unfavorable
freight rates. The clearances , yesterday , as
posted on the blackboard , foot uji only 53,000
bushels , but n dispatch from Now York
mentions an actual clearing of thirteen boat
loads (104,000 ( bushels ) additional to the lute
reports yesterday , to bo included In the day's
ofUclal returns. Uoports of now business
done In Now York , to-day , vary from sixteen
to tlilrt.v-fl.vo boat loads. Dutch gets a bill
In particular of freight room being token for
forty-six loads of grain , twelve to Portugal ,
eleven to Avonmouth. twelve to Cork , seven
to Mnrsnllles nnd four to Glasgow. This
may not moan wheat , and the buying of
freight room does not necessarily moan
shipment of grain at all. Still , the indica
tions may be considered iavorablo to un out
ward movement. McDonald wires that the
best posted men In the trade bellovo that all
of the wheat in store in New York and vicin
ity has been placed , except 3.000,000 bushels.
As stocks thcro approximate 5,000,000 ,
busholu , this means that 2,000,000 bushels are
held In readiness for shipment , U conditions
nro favorable. The story of the local market
mny ho best told ns follows : July , popular
dellvcrv , opened anywhere from SOc to 60)40 ) ,
and advanced immediately to 80J c. Above
80 > o there was very free selling by Linn.
Cudah.v und other professionals , who Imd
gene "long for a turn. " nnd equally liberal
buying by George Smith , Pardrldgo nnd
Phillips , who hud presumably gone short nt
lower figures. What Ilutchlnson was doing
wns cloudy , but ho wns suspected of heavy
purchases In n quiet way. Nfiw York was
certainly n good buyer on all the soft spots.
After the heavy-weight professionals had
got pretty well evened up , the market sold
Oil on skepticism 0,1 the subject of export
business ; and on expectations of rains
through the winter wheat districts , the mar
ket was run down to 70 c. It subsequently
advanced to SOKc- , mid off to SOc , closing ,
however , at SOJxc , or J c above yesterday's
last price. Viewed as to wheat , the murkot
may be said to have displayed considerable
"eimp. " It was buy on nil the
breaks , according to the scalpers' rec
ord , which applies only to ono ses
sion , without regard to to-morrow's
prospects. May ranged at S5@iOKc nnd
closed nt $5J c. Juno ranged nt 8yji@S4 > c
nnd closed ut 8-1 c.
The llrm opening to the wheat marKct ,
strong- cables and the nervousness of the
shorts , caused corn to start In fairly active
and llrm , nt about the closing prices of the
previous day. On free buying by the shorts
some advance on the opening was estab
lished , but the offerings of July corn nt 3Go
and over were in excess of the demand nud
an ouster feeling and u lower range of prices
wns established. St. Louis became very
weak on the prospects for rain in the corn
belt , und Now York was similarity affected.
The export demand was reported active at
New York nutl shippers were also taking
holu freely here. From the seaboard , clear
ings were very heavy. There were 00,000
bushels shipped yesterday from New Orleans
to Liverpool. The reaction from the early
strength was not again muJo good , the clos
ing figures being nearly the lowest of the
day nud from } { v toWo under the prices cur
rent nt the corresponding time yesterday.
Oats were active , with the recent see
saw motion carrying prices downward J $ @ % .
It was conceded that the sharp advance of
yesterday wus not altogether warranted , und
with reports qf rain In the west and indica
tions of further moisture * thcro was a desire
to sell. Furthermore , the local scalpers
were disposed to take In the profits resulting
Jrom the recent advance. The opening wns
n fraction lower all around , with May selling
( \owii \ J o to 23jffc , and June to ' ) % c. July
maintained its premium of nearlyj.f cover the
next month , and September wns quiet with
light trading In No. 2 outs , to go to store , at
23 0. 13uroly2.'iporeciit of 124 cars Inspected
is graded contract oats , and the withdruwls
from store were reduced to 0,425 bushels.
In provisions the feeling was a llttlo
nervous. The opening and closing were
bhuractorlzcd by decided strength , but dur
ing the day the market exhibited more or
. less uncertainty , with t null tig largely of the
sculping tort nnd between professionals.
The gossip lately circulated concerning' the
movements of Cudnhy and Armour naturally
placed the trade somewhat "at sea. " In all
quarters u strong disposition was manifested
to keep close to shore until something de
finite wus developed , hence the day's market
was largely a pit deal. Quotations were
kept within n moderate range , and for pork
and lard the Jinal quotations were the
same as yesterday. In short ribs ,
the changes Actually mudo were
limited to uu advance of '
