THE OMAHA DAILY BEE SATURDAY APEIL 20. 1889. AS BLOODED AS A PRINCE. Very Young Mr. Mllla nnd His BtnrUlng1 Record. HOW HE WORKED OMAHA FIRMS. Spending Money Ivnvlslily rtml Unlng IMctlioils Not Altogether Approved in DnalncRg Circles or Any * where Else. A Ijlvcly V on UK Mrui , Tlicro Is n young man in this city named Lawrence Mills. Ho Is the son of A. V. I ) . Mills , senior partner of Iho llrm of Mills , Ilnnkln & Co. Ho has attracted general attention among the young bloods and busi ness men of the town nnd when half of the people with whom tbo young man 1ms been Involved report , it will bo found that ho will bo compelled to draw largely on the assist ance of his relatives nnd friends to iot ; him out of his diniculty. It Is generally conceded that for n lad of his ago , being only seventeen , young Mills hits cut n swath which has never been ox- tidied In thin city. Wine suppers at the Omnlm club have been of frequent occur rence , nnd his passion for line clothes of the latest styles and clgurs at fl.GO each must have cost him hundreds , When D. l > . Winno arrived hero lust Monday , hints wcro given out III nt the local firm was In bud condition , but , that gentleman denied all knowl- edge of the matter. Subsequent developments , however , show that there was more In thu visit than Mr. Winno was willIng - Ing to disclose. Ho told a friend yesterday that young Mills' escapades have Injured him to the extent of $10,000. Most of this loss Is money duo the flnn , collected by the young man nnd spent in dissipation , The latter's ventures In n business way have been so bold and reckless us to turn the heads of old flnurrcicrs , but It seems that all Ills transactions were conducted solely on the one-sided plan. The num ber of business men who huvo been successfully held up by him , for largo nnd small amounts is not known , but thcro nro scares of them. The Hank of Commerce Is "out" about $300. Further , Winno states that seine of Mr. Mills' acts , If prosecuted , would easily land him In the penitentiary. His parents live on INorth Nineteenth street , and nro people of moderate circum stances , 'lo them ho 1ms been making false representations , regarding his business as well as social affairs , until they haa cotnQ to bcllovo him the most popu lar and successful boy In town. His membership at the club , now clothes , horse nnd buggy and many other things , ho told bis father , mother and sister , wcro urcscnts to him from business iniui. As yet , ho has not been taken ihto custody , but is trying to Induce some wealthy relative in Kentucky to i get him out of his scrape. ; Another transaction which has como to light exhibits Mills'B system of working. At South Omaha twenty carloads of salt arrived , consigned to Armour , Cudahy & Co. nnd Swift & Co. The cargo was shipped from Salt Lake City over the Union Pacllle. The two flrms wcro notified of the arrival of the material , but denied that they had ordered the salt nnd refused to receive It. They pronounced their order a fo'rgery. The company then looked Into the matter unil discovered that thn order of Suit Lile ; had been made by Lawrence Mills. In addition to this a cur load of rope , twonty-flvo bundles of cordage - ago nnd nineteen bundle ! ) of ham strings were set on the side tracks of Armour & Co. , but the latter again denied having or dered any of the material. Now the railroad company has Iho freight on Its bunds and the Salt Lake company will bo compelled to canvass for a purchaser of the unclaimed salt. It Is stated that , on tha strength of thcso orders , Mills obtained money which was advanced him by the linn at Suit Luke as commission. Melbourne , Stoddnrd & Co. , of this city , have had considerable dealing with young Mills , and through the hitter's indiscretion are now on the anxious scat. A short time ngo. Mills took the llrm's order ror rope and twlno to the extent of $157,000. Mills sold the material at a figure considerably below the standard. Thinking that it was all right , orders were solicited , and by the Milburn company , nt prices also reduced. Hut , the goods pur chased from young Mills failed to arrlvn.und now the Jlrm , to maintain the coocl faith of its customers , will bo compelled to 1111 Its orders at prices even below wholesale rates. Several days ago Mills purchased a buggy from the same firm , but was subsequently compelled to release the property. At other points similar Schemes wore worked by young Mills. McCor l , Urady & Co. have had considerable dealing with him. Mr. Urady stated that they had been given good figures by Mills , and us a con- scqucnco had placed with him sev eral orders. When the goods nrrivod the bill was Invariably at n higher amount than that at which they had contracted for. Young Mills was repeatedly tuken to task , and. at times , would pay the difference In the bills out of hts own pocket. At other times , tha difference was so largo that the goods wcro rejected and sent back without ceremony. The sumo may bo said of young Mills' ' dealings with Paxton & Gallagher. , D. P. Winno , who represents the twine trust , is a member of the llrm of Mills , Ranlcin & Co. His mission neve Is to straighten out matters In connection with the Otuana insti tution. THE O1UM1AN' HOME. "I hnyo been usipg Swift's Specific with the children of the orphan's homo under my charge with the best results. I began its use between nine and ten years ago , and have seen many remarkable results. Quito a number of the children had consti tutional blood diseases resulting from the tins of the parents , and every one of these children were cured of the horrible taint by the use of S. S. S. Tlicro have also been scores of children In tbo institution whoso systems ( they having been mostly without the benefits of parental care ) were enervated by dirt-eating and other foul practices. Kveryono of thcso children have taken S. S. S , , and all have been signally bcnolittcd by it. All have been cured who have taken enough of It. Wo have also two inmates of the homo , sub ject to painful recurring attacks of erysipe las. Neither ono improved under tbo treat ment usual for the disease. When all other medicines were discarded and they took S. S. S. the cure In each case was quick nnd permanent , for they have boon well for flvo years and there has been no return of the disease. I could toll much more of the re markable cures of blood disease by S. S. S. , for I have seen it used and know its value. L. II. PAVKK. A Postage Stamp Sells For $25O. There were plenty of buyers in the yards but none of them seemed to have very heavy orders or to cnvo much whether they bought any eattlo or not. The receipts of cuttle wcro the lightest ot any day this week since Monday , ana lighter than the receipts of last Friday by SOO head. The quality of tno cat tle was nothing extra , but there were some handy little cattle that wcro quite desirable. Salesmen found it slow work disposing of their bcoi and shipping steers and it took all day to clear the pens. The reports of largo supplies of cattle on eastern markets made tno snippers very cautious , while the crowded refrigerators , and dressed beef in light demand was a sufllcictit pretext for light buying on the part of the packers. The market us a whole was not very different from yesterday , certainly no higher , but possibly a little easier. The trade in butch er's stock was characterized by a wealc mar ket. About the average supply was on hand , nnd there was ono bunch of cows good enough to bring $3.03 , but the bulk sold at $2.60@2.75. Thcro were few northern feeders and a few odds and ends of natives on sale. The demand is pretty fair and there is a ccod deal of inquiry for good stackers and feeders. There was some little gain In the receipts of hogs , but still the supply was only mod erate. The market was ! ) @ 10e lower than yesterday and not active nt the decline. A very choice load of light mixed hogs sold early ntfl.CO , and some New York sorts brought the sumo price. The shippers of heavy hogs were doing nothing and the packers did not appear to want the hogs un less they could get thematf4.50@4.55.
