ISpcclal Telegram to Tun liEB.l The wheat markets ranged from 3nn to soft to-day , nnd closed barely stonily , ivith prices very near the Insldo , Trade was lull , very dull , and the market devoid of Icnsational or oven interesting feature * tnoatof the tlmo. The opening range was higher on San Francisco dispatches of a : rep deficiency In Australia nnd the colonies , dm quotations being 83J o for May and Juno and 82u for July. In the casg of July this showed over night n gain of % c. This acllvcry advanced to S3c , where orders to > ell an npparontly unlimited quantity were mot. The mnritot sold down under pressure from 89c to S8o for May , from 83J o to 88jtfo for Juno , and from 83 to 83J o for July. This stage of the dccllno spent Itself about II o'clock , and thereafter until about half an tiour of the close the market ruled dull and fairly steady at V@ ? e Improvement from the Insldo llguros. As the end of the session Iron' near the weakness In May and Juno Dccamo more pronounced and prices sloughed off to 87o nnd 87Jfc respectively , closing it the bottom. July was also dragged down Again to S2l.fc , where It rested at 1:15. : Tno last prices i-ocord very llttlo change as com pared with yesterday on the late months , but May and Juno leave oft about % @l c .ower. There is still considerable spccuki- ttvo nervousness In July , and operators who Feel bearish are reluctant to sell , whllo the wheat sold to Ilutclilnson and perhaps one or two others will not "settle. " On the other hand the ranvass of the pit discloses the fact that the majority of the scalpers and many strong commission houses are bullish and presumably long on their books. It Is also reported as possible an influential factor that the bucket shops the country over arc short X ) their customers atn ratio of probably ton ' o ono. When the country pets heavily long through the bucket shops , many tradcis irguo that a break Is very likely to follow , is the "bucket shops mnst live. " There iccms to'bo a quieting down In the cash movement of wheat , though more is going nit than Is coming Into the points of accumu lation. Soaking rains throughout Dakota ind Minnesota are reported , and additional rainfall In Iowa and Nebraska , and gener ally throughout the west. Ewnld , a St. Louis miller , wires that wheat Is heading out Ufty miles from St. Louis. This imiyboa irillo premature , but a correspondent from louthcrn Kansas advises that wheat In that section is from a foot to a foot mid a half high. Now York fails to advise of any now business , and the clearances from the seaboard are small of everything except Hour , which foots up fcbout 25,000 packages. Cables fire generally Daaier and practically every American market is lower nnd weak. Tomorrowvill bo observed 11 % a holiday on all the loading exchanges of the country. The opening of the corn market was ttrong , on account of the moderate receipts , which wcrp under yesterday's estimates , and It was helped also by the strength displayed by wheat. The foreign markets were still thowlnc a desire for American corn at cur rent prices , and the local shippers were also free buyers for the domestic trade. Good Inquiry existed for vessels to carry corn , which was soon known to speculators and bellied to maintain their faith in the market. . There wore 73,000 bushels cleared yesterday v from Now Orleans to Liverpool. The Hrui- ncsn was not productive of any increase in -Uio amount of business ctono , which was flown almost to zero , and there were long : n- lorvals during which there was not a single transaction. The impending adjournment over Friday appeared to dispose the local operators to quietness. The fluctuations Were narrow and price1) at the close almost Identical with these at the corresponding tlmo yesterday. Oats were moro quiet within n narrow range , though in the aggregate a good specu lative business was dono. The feeling wai one of easiness , induced largely by the con tinued liberal receipts , the knowledge of largo lines back in the country , and the favorable - vorablo weather for the now crop. The trading was chiefly of a scalping character , nnd the selling was general , with only mod erate support derived troni the shorts. May \vas the favorite , and after the early trading around 24 'c , sold oft to 23jc > , closing quiet , Juno and July were relatively steadier , nnd cash oats were dull at 2323.o for No. 3 to go to store. The provision trade leaned a llttlo to the ( low order. Occasional spurts of life were witnessed , but Ntho loaders rather loft the market to take Its own course and paid but llttlo attention to busincsH , The professionals controlled , In a measure , the pit , nnd their operations were din-rtcd largely to the cov ering of May contracts , ana the changing over of the same to July at a premium of I5o as rule , on pork , 7X@10o on lard , nnd 15c Dn short ribs. Strictly now trading was limited , nnd the outside orders received by the brokers were Insignificant. The pro duct averaged easier than on yesterday , though tradn was scarcely in a condition to bo called weak , and was certainly far from being depressed. At adjournment short ribs and lard stood at about yesterday's ' last prices for pork. The closings showed a nut decline of 7 c. CHICAGO JjIVlS STOCK. o. April 18. Although there Is nsoadv decline in the receipts ut the loading marKet points , the mnrkot continues on its downward course. und to-day's trade was generally quoted fj : lOo lower. The outlook , hownver , is a llttlo uioro cucourugin ; , and U the fallinij oil in receipts will only continue , there U a bare twsslhlllty that prices have touched their lowest point for n time. The supply of cattle tlo to-dny was COO head short of yesterday's number , and 800 head smaller than the re ceipts of a week ago. However , ihcro were plenty of catllo on sale , and moro than was good for the market. There were some rotty good cattle on sale , end ono bunch irought J3.70. The trade was slow to open , and slow nftcr It did open , mid it was well along toward noon before much business was dono. Llko yesterday , n good many cattle changed hands , but It was late before many of them sold. The cause for lower prices Is to bo found In the heavy receipts of a week Dack , and the light demand for beef , which is usual during the last week of Lent. Then , too , advices from the English markets are discouraging , American beef and cattle arriving in largo quantities and In largo numbers , which practically drives exporters out of the market. Tuero was not so much clidngo In the market for butchers' slock , al though some of the buyers were calling It considerably lower. A bunch of choice cows brought $3.1 , " , but n largo proportion of the sales were inado at a range of $3.50@2.00. There were no fresh receipts of feeders , ox ccptlng some cut out from the beef cattlo. The general market opened stronger , nnd with the best light nnd heavy hogs selling about 5c higher , but with other grades only steady. The market was active at the prices , nnd the hogs were all sold nnd weighed up early. The reports from other markets were not such ns to cause nn advance , but the ap parent reason for the strengthening In prices hero was the good demand , which was strengthened by the ndvcnt of shippers , which was the source of a healthy competi tion , There was a slight gain In the receipts , ns compared with yesterday , and also as compared with the corresponding day last wee it.
