The first quotation was 69c , the final one 83Ki and It sold between 8So and SO'fc. The July figures were 82 } < o nt the start , 83 # at the hlgbect point , and SS C SS c was the lowest quotation. The market started In firm from a variety of causes , the principal one cf which was the strength of the fore ! , } ! ! markets. "Liverpool tending up" for American wheat , has not been the Ian- L'ungo recently used In describing that market , amt It caught the local speculative sentiment hero In humor to respond. Heavy bear operators have a good following In the local trade who are perhaps lacking some what In the sluows of war ami certainly In the courage so prominently characteristic of the leaders. Those weak-knrcd bears were the principal buyers early In the day. TholKtt- 000 bushel decrease In the visible supply ex ceeded the general expectations , and helped to maintain the early strength , which was assisted likewise by the belief that the rains In the northwest had missed the important lied Hlvor Valley district ; but when Inter lu the day this pin was bowled down by the signal service ofllcc , the market had its setback - back from 88J < c for July to S'JJic. This was very gradual , however , and trading was not animated until the turning point at S3c was cncuuntcrcd , around which there was an ex cited tussle , lasting for some minutes. The May deal emitted sparks like flint every time It was sharply struck , and like the panic sub stance was cold and Impassive most of the time. The strength displayed by the wheat mar kct haa a sympathetic effect upon corn , and was In some degree the cause of the early advance. There was some Inquiry from the shorts , who appeared willing to buy , and did buy considerable May corn at 34J ( ij3 &fc. and also paid 34c for one or two fair-sized lines. The foreign markets were firm end the ex port Inquiry good. The receipts were not as heavy as had been predicted , by 54 cars. The decrease In the visible supply ot 250,000 bushels was not generally expected , owing to the diminished exports of last week , and from these various causes the mariict ruled firm in the early part of iho session , but thn dependence Uxm | the strength of the wheat market was shown In the weaker feeling developed when the other grain showed symptoms of breaking. The close of the market was firm at an advance of from } c to J e on the active futures , May closing at 34&C , riralnst348@34Kc on Saturday , and July at 35c , against 35W'35c at the close of the previous closing day. The regular market for oats was moder ately active and good , and speculative busi ness was done at unsettled prices. After the weak opening atM4 ! < gM&c : , May advanced to 24 fTe and later reacted to 24jfc. The early strength was due In part to sympathy with the silent firmness in wheat and corn , together with some purchimlng for account of shorts , and-tho moderate offerings. The buy Ing orders were soon filled , however , ex cept at the lowered prices , with June and July on nearly thn snmo level with May. Cash oats were quiet at24c for No. 2 to go to store. v The provision traders opened weak , with a slow market. In both cash and future property the trading was marked by a moie than ordinarily conservative feeling , and in the general market there was no unusual feature , yalues , however , were well sup ported , and with moderate fluctuations the closing stood at a higher level all around than on Saturday. Tbo run was not up to the expectations of the buy ers , and most of them were looking for 12noo at least , and so they maneuvered about to make up in some way for their dis appointment , but salesmen hold their con signments firmly , and when business really opened prices were substantially higher than on Saturday , yet not quite up to Fri day's r.mgo , and about everything sold. Tcxans were stoady.nnd all classes of butch ers' stock made satisfactory prices. There was nothing going on In the stockcr and feeder jrade , and prices were about the snmo as last week. [ Special Telegram to TUB BKB.I STOCKS At the opening of the stock market thU morning prices wore Irregular , with the principal changes from Saturday an advance of > in Louisville & , Nashville , while Kock Island and Atchlson 1 stfti ted } f to flower. The list as a whole ilartcd a trllla lower , with a quiet feeling and no disturbing or oven animating features after the first few minutes. The list was led by Atchlson , that stock selling off 1 point from the close Saturday , to 40 % then up to 41 } i and ° ff IK'0" ' below 41. Most of the other active stocks moved with slight frac tions in the same way. The activity was confined to Oregon Transcontinental , Louis ville & Nashville , Northern Pacific pre ferred , Missouri Paclllo , Union Pacific , and Reading , Oregon Short Line and Plttsburg & Western Pennsylvania also attracted at tention , the former by opening away off at 1 % and reacting , and the latter by an ad- ranco of 1 per cent. At the end of an .hour the list was dull and steady at not far from the opening figures. Toward noon Burling ton came to the front and sold off a point. The list sympathized , while Manhattan and Oregon Navigation lost X and 1 per cent ro- ipcetlvely. At midday a better feeling pre vailed , but the list remained under the open ing prices. The sales for the forenoon were 115,675 shares. The weakness in stocks con tinued , with slight reactions to tbo close. Fortunately for the good of the martrct the cattle receipts were very light and the trade was plveu an oppoitunity to recover from the heavy run of lust week. There were a few pretty good dressed bcof nnd shipping steam on sale , and with both packers and shippers frcu buyers the sup ply was soon exhausted , Tlio Rteer stuff sold at a range of L50 to $4.00 but thcro were no choice heavy cattle on nulc. In the way of butchers' stock thcro was not much on sale. Cows sold at fJ.25C43.iK > . A few light northern catllu about constituted the supply of stackers aud feeders , and the trading was necessarily limited. With only ten loads on snlo there could hardly bo said to have been a market. The prices paid were about 5a higher thw Satur day's rnarjcci. Sheep.
