CHICAGO PRODUCE MARKETS.
CuiCAfio , April 12. [ Special Telegram to
TUB IJnB.i Satisfying rains over the major
portion of the winter and spring wheat areas ,
and the low barometer In the extreme north
west , whcro drouth tins caused some appre
hension , and the discouraging cables , caused
a weak opening In the wheat market , but as
the decline Induced quite a number of local
ihnrts to accept , the profits and offerings on
the break were not excessive. The market
teen steadied and showed signs ot reviving
itrcngtli. The May future was bid up sharply
by McDonald and others , July future selling
rapidly up to SUfcnftcr the room traders ,
tvho were short , had covered , and the out-
mlojmarkets evinced no indication of ro-
ipondlng to the advance. The demand
ibatcd , and a short period ot Inaction fol
lowed. There being nothing In the situation
to alarm the larger shorts , the offerings
gradually Increased , growing In volume as
the market declined , until a flood of
long and short wheat deluged the pit. The
shtaf rel'unco of the bull party has
been the oversold condition of the July fu
ture , bill as thu short Interest Is mainly pro
fessional and llnanchilly strong , they are not
easily frightened Into covering the now crop
delivery , with such splendid promise of an
early nnil abundant scnson. There were
rigorous sellers on every hard spot , until
July touched SHfc , and much long stuff
came out on the way down. The market ap
peared to have some recuperative powers
when free from the pounding of the bear
leaders , but after working back to 82 } c , the ,
dual onslaught by the Joncs-ICennott crowd
forced the price to 81 % ' < Slc. Therewcro
nuxious shorts In the old crop futures , and
confident bears In the now , and while the
former bid anxiously for what was a very
scarce article , the latter opened the sluices
and about drowned the market with July
wheat. The closing prices showed the result
of this mixed condition of affairs , May and
Juno paining from IJ c to le , while July
closed le lower than It did yesterday.
The market for corn opened steady , and
under the fair demand advanced and caused
eorno uneasiness to the shorts , who were in
duced to buy some. When their wants were
Buppllcd the feeling became dull and prices a
trllle easier. Shipments by lake arc now
likely to rcduco the stocks hero , the outward
movement to-day and yesterday being on a
liberal scale. The foreign markets continuo
to bo quoted steady to llrm for American
corn , and orders at the seaboard on foreign
account are reported to bo equal to thp offerIngs -
Ings of vessel room , There was less activity
In trade than was the case on the two preceding -
ceding days , and the business done was like
wise largely on local account. The fluctua
tions were narrow , and in the end only a
small fraction In advance of the closing
figures of the day before.
In oats another active day was
noted with a full cent decline in May
the feature of trade. The recent weak
ness in this cereal evidently brought out
a lot of stop orders , whcro mar
gins wcro exhausted , and as a result
there was to-day a uencral selling by the
crowd. After the steady opening at 25Ho.
May declined to 24c , owing to a lack of
support aside from that givoii It by the
shorts. There was a sharp demand around
the inside , with liberal business recorded on
the down grade. It was not generally believed
lioved that the clique were doing much.
Juno and July were quiet and relatively
much steadier than May , while cash oats
shared the weakness , with No. 3 regular of
fered Into in the day at 24c.
Provisions about hold their own. The
day's range of prices was pretty much the
Bamo ns that of yesterday. The fluctuations
were limited and the actual changes made
were without significance. Pork and short
ribs , In fact , were quotably unchanged nt the
close , while in lard the Until quotations Indi
cated a decline of only -c.

Ho Makes a Brilliant Argument for
thn I'urnellltes.
LONDON' , April 12. Sir Charles Kussell
concluded liis speech in defenses ot the Par-
nellltcs before the Pnrncll coinmisslon this
morning. IIo undertook to show that the mon
ey Parnell gave 13yrne , which the prosecution
alleged was given for the purpose of enab
ling Uyrno to escape , was meant by Parnell
to bo used for the ordinary purposes of the
[ caguo , and that Parnell did not Unow that
Byrne was in peril of arrest. The court ,
Sir Charles said , in concluding his speech ,
was retrying the history of the
Irish revolution. Ho uskcd that
fair and generous consideration bo given it.
If prosperity was returning to Ireland ,
thanks bo to ( Joel. Hut affairs were un
healthy in u country wlinro the ucople con
sidered imprisoned members of the house ol
commons licros and martyrs. Sir Charles
declared ho did not speak merely as an
advocate of the accused members of
the commons , but for the land of his
birth , and ho believed in the best interests
of England. Tlio inquiry which was in
tended to bo a curse , had been u blessing.
It had been designed for tlio purpose of ruin
ing ono man , but had proved the means of
bis vindication.
There was a sensation in the court room
when Sir Charles concluded his speech. It
is the general opinion that ho never
spoUo bettor. When ho had fin
ished Presiding Justice Ilunncn passed
u note to him in which lie said : "I Congratu
late you. Your speech was a great ono and
worthy of a great occasion. " Upon the con
elusion of to-day's proceedings court ad
journed until April 80.
Destructive Forest Fircn.
PiTTSiiuito , l a. , April 12. [ Special Tele
gram to TUB Unn. ] for several days past
fierce forest fires have been raging on the
mountain riUga , extending parallel to the
SusQUchanna between this place and Wllltos-
barre. Acres upon acres of the finest pine
timber are being consumed and all efforts to
check the progress of the flames nro futilo.
The scene nt night is indescribably grand.
At Campbell's ledge the fire readied its
climax , from the basa of the mountain to Us
summit being literally ono vast sheet ol
llamo , resembling u cone. Great numbers of
small game are being burnt out of the woods.
