THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Wheat Weak and Prices at aCORN " Docltno. CORN RECEIPTS GRADE BETTER. Dnln Active With Price Narrow Another Slump Suffered In Provisions Cuttlo Vulucn Tuko a Down-Turn. CHICAGO PUOnUOK MAIUUiTS. CHICAGO , April 11. [ Special Telegram to rim BKB.I The wheat market was weak ind lower to-day. The opening prices were \c \ off , and the llrst figures wcro tlio best ot Ino day. The government report did not lisappolut expectations. It gave * the aver- ICO condition on the 1st ot April at 01 , the latno as In 1880 , and only about a point and naif below 1884 , whou the crop of 512,000,000 bushels was raised. This could only carry 5no construction , and that Is bearish. An- ) thcr factor of the depression wai the nrcathcr report. Hams were reported all through Iowa , and from points In Nebraska ind Dakota. The Indications point to cop ious rains throughout the northern winter tvhcat area In the near future. This tends to produce uneasiness among the bulls and jonfMonco among the boars. On the break Jhat resulted from the two lo.idlng c.mtos aicntloncd and the nttltudo of several promt' Incnt operators , thcro was frco covering of ihort wheat , which caused a reaction from the extreme low prices , but the feeling was not that of solid strength , and on the hard spots the big bears kept the market plugged full. The ndvlucs from the northwest , iisido from reports of occasional showers In the southern districts , wcro bull ish , and tticro wits some excellent buying for northwestern account. The elevator people wired that whatever the fuluro might huvo i- , In store for the spring wheat country , in i1 1 t rain , none had fallen yet to do any good. The millers In Minneapolis advised tholr cor respondents hero thut thcro was money In flour at' present wheat prices , anil that they wcro taking off tholr hedges and preparing to take euro of their cash wheat without further protection In the line of Insurance by Bales clsowhoro. For some tlmo pout It has been felt In certain quarters hero that one of the principal menaces to the market was In the heavy lines of wheat held for northwest ern account. Holders evidently still feel strong up tticro. Seaboard advices were not , as a rule , favorable , though some expert - port business was reported , and moderate clearances are the rule. An important fall- uro .in the grain trade In Berlin imparted a weak feeling to the Now York market about the middle of the day , but a bolter tone pre vailed later , and to that fact was duo the i ( steady clqslng hero. July opened at 83) ) c , moved up J c , nnd then sold down to SIMc. Good buying by the shorts carried the prices up to S2)lc , but the market settled back to 82 c , rallying however to 82-ii'c. ana closing there , XD lower than yesterday. May opened ntBOXc , ranged at SftQSO i ! . and closed at SGo. Juno ranged at b5@:0 ! ! c and closed at 80c. There was only a light trade "done In those months ( May and Juno ) and very lit tle was done at lha , Instdo. The volume of operations in the lute futures was fairly largo. The fine weather and the weakness In pro visions and wheat hud a depressing Inlluenco on corn , which opened futrly nctivo but weak at yesterday's closing prices. The receipts were fourteen cars In excess of yesterday's estimates , and the proportion of them in specting No. 2 Is on ttio Increase. Liverpool quotations earno about * ( < ; per cental lower , but ttio dispatch reported fair demand at the dcclli" ' Exports bavo been under the recent overage lor a day or two , but there is no lack of cxpo-t orders ut the soabo.ird. Thcro Is expectation of heavier receipts soon , . .but these expectations may or may not bo real ized. Thcro were Increased offerings from the country sellers , nnd the feeling among the local speculators was ono of weakness. From being qulto active early in the day the market 'loama dull towards noon , ana prices hardened fractionally on the near deliveries , May closing at 84 % @ 84c. Thcro was quite an active demand for May when It touched Sl c , and although it reached that figure more than once , it was difllcult to execute buying orders at that limit. Oats. , wore active , though the price changes woro' uarrow and the market was bately steady , with Increased trading In the long future at slightly lower prices. A promt- ncnt'Bhort purchased a , fair quantity of May at 2525Jc , while Juno und July were J @ % c lower. April and cash wcro quiet areund 25) c , with sales largely by sample. Under the Increased offerings May was moro active later , belling down to 25c. In provisions another slump was suffered. Unfavorable advices from the stock yards where hogs were quoted weak and 5rj ( > 10e lower , encouraged the bears to open the market with a raid. The first sales of fu ture pork wcro made at 15o , of lard at c , and of short ribs at Co under yesterday's closings. Subsequently pork sold off untlor bearish Influences u further lOc , und short rlbs2)fc. ) Lard hung around the opening prices without : Ufa or feature. On the de pression witnessed ttio raiders forced the un loading ot a large nuiount of stop orders In pork and short ribs , und during the llrst hour of 'change the weak feeling held full swny. Later , however , the market recovered n llttlo In tone , und bolter prices became the mid.
