THE UEB. " | The wheat mnrkor was quite
weak and flabby at times to-day , but the av
erage of thu prices was lighter than yester
day's clotting range , notably for the near by
futures , The close was soft , however , at
the Insldo prices. Two great factors to-day
vvcro the dry weather on one side , and the
expectation of n bearish government crop re
port on the other. This report was not duo
until 3 o'clock this afternoon , but the major
ity of the local operators , under the leader
ship of Hcnm , sold whcut us though morally
certain that the agricultural department was
going to forecast an overwhelming crop this
year. July wheat opened hero at S3Jc. The
market advanced to 84creacted
with only a fractional set back to
worked back to 8-l c , recovered
64XC | nnd then shortly after noon sold oil
easily to 63c. The latter end of the ses
sion was not marked by especially excit
ing Incidents , except that the weakness
\VM emphasized to a considerable dcgrco.
'Ilio cloBO was ut 8Xc. ! ) After the break to
83J e there occurred n rally to b4j c , but the
market again yielded , and the price went to
83 fc. The volume of trade was largo and
on the whole satisfactory. The market is
getting cjulto attractive on account of Its
freedom from manipulators' Influences and
outside business Is decidedly on the Increase.
May and Juno were fairly active In a nar-
riw way. Ar on yesterday the two months
kept close together. May opened at 80 > rfc ,
sold oft } c and advanced to 83Kc. The
range for Juno was bO@S8laC. The close
wan 67c for May and b(3c ( for Juno. Now
York was relatively stronger than Chicago.
No now export business of importance was
repoi ted , but the prevailing belief is that the
foreigners nro buying wheat at the seaboard
on soft spots. The markets thcro are now
clearly down to a shipping basis , and if the
foreigners have any use for wheat at all they
wilt "nip It up. " The dry weather is again becoming -
coming sufficiently general to bo n source of
apprehension. This Is especially the case in
the northwest. The recent rains in that sec
tion wcio moro sprinkles , and complaints
uro once moro coming in from the winter
, -whcnt points. The long interest in this mar
ket for northwestern account is believed to
be very heavy , and so long as the local
weather features up thcro continue so very
bullish thcro Is little likelihood of the prop
erty coming out. The northwestern long in
terest , therefore , becomes a possible factor
of great strength or great weakness , depend
ing on the weather for the next few days or
weeks.
The corn market opened nctlvo and w cak
and a further break in the price has to bo re
corded. The holders of May contracts are
apparently unwilling to await the dellvoryof
corn , and the free offerings from day to day
have weakened their hands. The export do-
uinnd shows no sign of diminishing , and
thcro is'no Increase of receipts ] ii this or the
other markets tn account in full for the in
creasing weakness prevailing here. The es
timated receipts for to-day wcro31 cars and
the actual receipts wcro 2jr > cars , and for to
morrow they were estimated at 805 cars.
When May corn first touched 4c there was
a good demand , which caused a reaction to
34o and SHe , but free selling again caused a
weakness , and the next dip was to 3ic.
The decline In each case was stubbornly con
tented , but the bears wore In the majority ,
a u/at every 1-lUc decline some holdings
were thrown over. The offerings were kept
up on the same scale to thu close , which was
weak at the bottom prices of the day. The
result is a decline siuco the close of the pre
ceding day of % a in May and } fa each in
Juno uqd July.
Oats wcro active and strong early , with
quietude later , and a largo part of the im
provement was lost. The trailing was cen
tered in May. which advanced J @ % o under
good buying led by ono or two piomlncnt
fihorts reaching 20c. With these orders filled
the market soon receded to nearly the insldo
point , with Juno and July in fair favor ana
relatively steadier. The receipts exceeded
the expectations by fully 20 curs , while on
the other hand , the withdrawal's from store
wore more liberal and included 50,000 bush
els. No. 2 oats to go to store sold at 25) c ,
and the trading was chiefly by sample.
The bear side a.-jjieared to hold the balance
of power in provisions. ' Trading opened
With the market reasonably strong , but there
was little or no outside domain ! , and the sup
port it commanded came almost wholly from
the shorts , who , for u time , purchased freely.
When they stopped buying , however , the
bcnr clement met with no opposition in as
suming control. Its support being with *
drawn , trade was in good shape for a raid ,
and with a little hammering prices went to
plccos. During the last hour or so of 'change
dccllno followed decline , , oud at abuut 1
o'clock the day's loArest figures wcro touched.
Based on yesterday's final quotations , the
closings she ived actual declines of 22 } ( rt27J c
on pork , Do on lard and G@10o on short ribs.
