[ Special Telegram to TUB DEE.I I'rccd from manipulation the wheat market IB once more showing signs of henlthful speculative nctlvlty. Commission merchants almost uniformly report improv ing business , mid everything on the bpeculn- tlvo list scorns to bo "limbering up. " The market to-day has to some extent the ' 'liqui dating" features that hnvo characterized It for several days past , but the weakness was followed by marked Improvement. Timid nnd weak longs throw wheat early , and pa tient shorts did considerable covering on ooft siiotB. The markets everywhere on this side of the Atlantic wcro weak nnd lower , nnd cables presented n front of dullness and weakness , though there were Intimation' * that the foreigners wcro pushing quiet In quiries for good wheat not only at the sea board hut In Chicago. The northwest was especially and noticeably weak. Minneapo lis opened DXc off * It recovered some , but was at no time strong. The western winter wheat market * wore soft and spiritless on the flno woathcr and on the partial demorali zation here. The local sentiment Is tremend ously bearish on everything in sight wheat , corn nnd provisions. It is seemingly almost unanimous , nnd nothing Is "any good , " in the language of the fctrcot. When opinion Is in that shape "barguin hunters" begin to come out of their retirement. The forelirnors uro about the best "bargain hunters" in the grain trade , nnd as the day advanced the impression became stronger among the con servatives that the foreigners wore nwako to their opportunities. The shipping houses did not appear anxious to advertise- the fact , but they were , nevertheless , picking up choice wheat that was looking around for customers. On merit , that is to say , on its nctual milling values. Chicago wheat Is down about to a parity with the other markets , and this fact Is commonly recognized In the grain trado. The crowd got "onto" this shipping gossip towards the close of the ses sion , and guvo the market a firm closing at n substantial recovery frtorn the inside prices. Previous to that , however , everything looked gloomy. July opened at 83 > c , a loss of jftc over nlfrht. It sold oft to Silo right awny. At this'pvico Cudahy and several local op * craters began to cover short sales , and an ndvanco of Ic was started. As the market kept going up u lot of little bulls caught on , but when the market started back from 84c , nnd ocaln broke , after n , smart bulge to 81 } e , they tumbled their stuff over once more. The market broke to S3 ! e , and was groggy between 83) ) < ( < 433c for the better part of. nn hour. ArounU noon the Into recovery above re ferred to carried the price to Sic , arid the lust quotation was 83J < r , the satno ns lust night. Uenra who put out now lines on the second break did not faro well as a rulo. Trade In May nnd Juno was light , but the iluctuations were sharp. As on yesterday , thcftwo months kept close to day. May opened lit feOo , sold "off to 84 c , and with fre quent nnd nervous jumps and breaks , climbed up to 8 Kc. The close wus at SO c for May nnd Juno , or tfo better than yesterday. The corn nmritot opened easier , which was generally ascribed to the Influence of the lower prices ruling for wheat , but the fa- vorublo weather for farm operations was doubtless an additional feature of the weak ness influencing speculators. The opening prices were around the llgurcs prevailing at the close yesterday- but soon weakened under the liberal offerings induced by the aforementioned considerations. At 8. > } c for May , which was the price soon after the opening , there xvas good inquiry , which pre vented further decline nt that time , and the market then became very dull. After a period of slugcish Inactivity another spell of heavy selling commenced , and It brought about a further decline of } gc in May , the price for that future getting down to 35c , and July , which was also very freely offered , sold down to liSXc. At these prices there appeared heavy buying orderi. nnd the market may bo said to luivo stood its pounding remarkably well. The closing prices were near the bottom , however , and show a loss since yesterday nt Iho'corresponding time of about % a on May and July , nndc nn Juno and September. Oats attracted fair attention on the part of traders , though the volume of the specula tive business was much less than yesterday , nnd the m-Ico changes were conllncd within a narrow channel , averaging nearly steady to firm. There wcro reports of a probable largo early outward movement of cash oats ns u result of the frco sales of April , yester day , and i5c ! was again bid for this month to-day , with light business in No. 2 oats to go to store at 25Vc. May was a favorite future , with fair trading early ut a steady figure of ' > % e , improving } a to SJjJ o and the latter ruling moro quiet , with Juno nnd July nt the com mon range of 25c to 2o ( < J'J3)f c. Out Inspec tion wus moro liberal , aggregating 13,000 bushels , and n sale was recorded of 200 cars of No. 2-freo on board at25' < J'c. In provisions the feeling was qulto strong after the morning hour or so of the session. At the opening pork was raided with con siderable vigor , but as it refused to break easily nnd was scarcely followed nt nil on the receding turn by short ribs nnd lard , the raiders soon became tired of their undertak- ing. Thu stubborncss of the entire market discouraged the pounders , and on their with drawnl the decline forced was practically re covered. During the greater portion of the churga trade acted as If the weak-kneed holders had pretty generally unloaded , and the condition ot affairs had Improved. In pork there was moro or less doing through out , but In the other lines the day's trading made a poor showing. CHICAGO MV13 STOCK. CitiCAtiQ , April 0.
