" " - - . THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , AP1IIL 3. 1880. WOO POSSESSES THE LAND ? Dooa the Omaha Colony Hold the Key to Oklohomn ? SOMEONEOPINESTHE CONTRARY Discussions In tlic RnnkB of tlio Local About-to-Ilo I'llgHtus Statement or a Dis gruntled Member. H'nrtli Investigating. Conservative members of the organisation of Oklahoma boomers In Omaha are , It Is ealcl , beginning to realize that the Institu tion Is not what It purports to be. From the commencement It was headed by an exclu sive clique , and 1ms been kept up solely be cause the enterprises enlisted support from u class of people not conversant with the sit uation. The Omaha colony is credited with SCO members on the books , ami lust night ut a meeting of that body nn Individual who joined the organization at the outsturt , stated that if every name that was given In had been properly registered und the money accounted for , the list would represent atlcost 1,000 members. Hut with the : tCOtho exchequer Is In a healthy condition when It Is taken into consideration that each Individ ual member pays nn Initiation fee of M. Ac cording to the records of the secretary over $1OCO have been paid in which under tha curtain of the by-laws Is to boused In defray ing "Incidental expenses , hall rent and sala ries of ofllcotfi. " Another noticeable feature of the organization Is the fact that prime rlngstors are among the "salaried" members. At a meeting held In college hall last night , young boys , young maidens , married women and men who had Daroly enough to pay their Initiation fee , enrolled their names on the ledger ns members. An Individual who is a member of the farmers' ' organization , con versing with n reporter in the hall at tlio tiino. said : L "There now , look there 1 Look at that fel low who has Just paid his $31 Perhaps ho 1ms not another dollar in Bight. Now thcro is a young girl. Slio has been given the money by her father , who is u member , and who Is somewhat after the naturoof a swlno. Ho wants two claims. Now that is Just what has sickened mo of this organization. T have discovered that I pnld my Sit for what } For this , " holding in his hand a certificate of membership of the Omaha colony , "and It is not worth the paper it Is written on. It affords nothing ; its obligations are simply of a series of private signs and indications of this order. Anybody can go to Oklahoma as well wltnout as with it. Then again I have looked this matter over carefully since becoming a member. I will say that this whole thing is gotten up by sharpers for the purpose of duping the unin formed 'class of people. What can you expect , I say , from a largo concourse of penplo sent .to n territory undeveloped , without visible means of support in an Industrious com munity. I will say that If this class of pools ls going to settle up Oklahoma the territory in question will bo the scuno of extreme poverty and desolation. "Thou the whole thing in a nutshell is that this system of colonization is ono devised by the schemers to make money at the expense of the Ignorance of the people that patroniro It. The lllllng of an , entirely now and unde veloped territory witn a concourse of the poorer class ol humanity Is not only nwrong- tlolng.but un outrage that should not bo al lowed. " The reporter questioned into the details of the Institution and found the above remarks to be but little overdrawn. The "colony , " however , will inova about April 18 to Oklahoma and will bo about 300 strong. Further details in connection have not as yet been arranged. Each colonist must bear his or her own expenses. A glance into its "ofllcial" circles last night revealed the fact that the secretary was salaried at $ . " ( ) per month , the president at $75 per month and several side-bidders were on the pay role with their salaries meted out under the garb of "incidental expenses. Council Meeting. The council held a lenethy session last night lasting until 11:30 : o'clock. An effort was made to cut out of the appropriation ordinance the pay of the special ofllccrs of the police force who have been hunting up evidence against the violators of the Sunday closing ordinance. The ordinance was passed , however , nnd a resolution adopted appointing u committee of live to investigate the charccs against the police force and to examine into the general competency of the police ofllcials. Taking into consideration the fact that the receipts were the heaviest of any day in four months , the market was certainly in a most satisfactory condition. A dull and lower market would have been no surprise with such heavy receipts , out there was ono cle ment of strength in the fact that the receipts were light at all other points. The trade opened early nnd shippers , ns well as the dressed beef operators , were free buyers to that extent that n very largo proportion of the beeves had changed hands before mid day. While salesmen in a good many cases thought they got fully steady or even strouir prices for their medium weight and handy cattle , still there was nn easier undercurrent nnd the buyers generally claimed to have bought their cattle n shade easier than aver- ngc. The heavier cattle , which are becom ing moro plenty at all the market points in the country , did not sell so strong ns yester day. The beef cattle sold nt u range of W.'JO @ 3.S3. with the bulk at $3.80 3.00. Hutch- crs' stock sold at fully steady prices , tlio cows bringing { -2.20(23.00. ( Feeders were w.uitcd at steady prices , but the supply was very light. Some choice feeders sold ns high as $3.20 , with a small bunch at $3.15. Hoys. / The receipts of hogs were moderate , but the buyers set out to buy the hogs lower , nnd ns salesmen were not prepared to make n concession the trade wns extremely slow. There was practically u dead-lock all the morning. At the time of closing there were still ten loads left unsold , the salesmen re fusing tlio prices offered. The hogs which were sold brought mostly $4.50@4.55. Bliccu. Although the receipts wore heavy , there were practically no sheep offered on the mar ket.
