Corn Seems to bo Getting Bearish OnlH Dull Provisions Commnml Conslilornblo Attention Ont- tlo Fairly Active. cmcAGojriioDUCE MARKET. CHICAGO , March 20. [ Special Telegram to THE I3KE.J Wheat was not especially In teresting to-day In n news'way , or-on ac count of the magnitude or Rlgnlllcanco of the upcculatVvo operations. The advices from the seaboard were tuucd to funeral music. They reflected weakness , ploom and dis couragement nt the prospects. Cables were dull nnil sick na a rule , yet , singularly enough , foreigners continue to take a little American wheat. It has been noticed in the post that sometimes when the foreigners uro beginning to think ol going actively Into the market as buyers they send out the sickest reports of demoralisation abroad. This maybe bo n case of genuine sickness , however. 'As for the news nearer home , < t may bo stated that It Is cold and "snow-showery , " as gifted Amello Ulvcs would put It , In the immediate lake region , and mild nnd cloudy over the winter wheat dlstilcts , with occasional spitting of ruin , but not enough to count. St. Louis wire's that 70,000 bushels of 100,000 bushels bought a low weeks ago for A prll shipment to Qalvcston are being loaded on barge * to-day , nnd that the remainder Is certain to follow soon. Toledo wires that 25,000 bushels was taken there by the millers to-dny. nnd the western markets very generally rule fairly active on a ship- pine oasis. There Is nothing boisterously bullish obBorvhblo anywhere outside of May wheat In Chicago , Just nt this writing. As for May wheat It seoins to bo "corked. " The high prices ruling arc serving to increase the receipts to a moderate extent , US cars being received to-day and 01 estimated for to-mor row. May was not much traded In to-day , though the transactions were of sufficient magnitude to remove the fears of stag- * nation. The bulk of the trading was In July. May , however , started oft nt J1.01M. advanced to f 1.03 , sold off to fl.OlJf , advanced to 1.02 > , dropped back to $1.02 , hung around that point for an hour and n half or more , and n few minutes before the close shot up to Sl.Ol on the bidding by Boyd , Baldwin , Poole and others. .The close was $1.04 , or-2o above yesterday. The tip \yas out "on the curb" last evening that the price would bo $1.10 to-day or to morrow. July began nt 88c , sold down to May spurt- - The closing quotation was 83 0 , or } { o better - tor than yesterday. There was very free Balling on all the hard snots by the strong local professionals , anil excellent support from the generality of the commission mer chants and by Hutchlnson'u brokers. The local temper m corn seems to bo once more getting bearish on the late futures , but there are ovidcnccs of no little nervousness among the shorts on the smallest provoca tion. Ono of the things that alarmed thorn to-day was the signal service prediction of the approach of a cold wave. Choice No. 3 corn , such as is being received from Ne braska points , is working very close to the price of No. 2. The speculative market was without animation and the prlco changes lor the different futures so narrow as to create but llttlo interest among the local specula tors , and from the outside points orders for the future months wcro scarce. Tbo Eng lish marliota were Btoady to firm , and there is every appearance of a con tinuance of the present active export trade , with prices around the present level. In addition to the heavy clearances from the Atlantic ports yesterday , as noted above , " Vow Orleans parties shipped out 150,000 /oUshcls to Rouen. The range of price was confined to Xo , and was J o to } { o lower on futures at the close than at the corresponding time the previous day. 1 Oats were exceedingly dull and feature less , with the speculative branch of the market qulto neglected during the greater part of the day. There was almost an entire absence of any outside trading orders , and the light local business was confined within , & > ffc ran go. The general tone was one of > easiness , with rather more sellers than buy ers. May ranged tit il5K@20c , with Juno at Jffo discount , and the other months next lo nominal. Out of 100 cars inspected in , twon- ty-ilvo were contract grade. No. 2 oats , to go to store , were dull at 25c , and sales were chiefly by samulo. Provisions commanded considerable atten tion , though the active interest was largely concentrated in pork. Short ribs nnd lard were strong and well supported , but in both Bucculution dragged more or loss. In pork , however , there was more than the ordinary animation as woli as irregularity. It opened Go under .yesterday's closings , and lu a few minutes sold up. 7 > o and back 1240. When , the lowest price was touched tlio bears reached the conclusion they were in the mi nority and the market wubsequontly sold up B2)fc. The upward turn also brought out irood buying , and for May and July particu larly , pork sola quite freely. The resting quotations for the saino article wcro 20o ubovo yesterday's final figures. Short ribs closed unchanged , nnd lard unchanged to 2K uiguor. CHICAGO Bl'OOa. CUIOAOO , March 29. | Special Telegram to TUB BEB.J CATTMI Business was fairly active and prices about the same as yester day. The export demand was fair , but the buyers wantcdnlighterand cheaper grudo of -cattle than they bought in the early part of the wcolc or last week. The dressed beef and nulpplng demand was up to the average , and the chances were that about everything useful would bo sold. Cow stock is un changed and In fair demand. ( Special Telegram to Tun Huc.1 STOCKS When stock oper ations were resumed to-day the professionals were bearish , whllo thy usual amount of bull talk about earnings was circulated. London did little or nothing , whllo Boston soon was heavily on the selling slae In a few stocks. The trade realises that the western situation Is bad , the southwestern not hopeful , aud ills- turbuncos almost certain among the trunk lines. These and other influences led to heavy pressure on certain stocks before the morning was half gone. At the opculng there WRB no marked olmngo from last night in tbo character of tbo market or the range of yric . Lake Shore started K higher and Jersey Control J < lower , with the Hat Irregu lar. Later in the hour the urnr'ncd weakness In three stocks , Union Pacific , Atchlson and Missouri Pacltlo , bocama the feature. There was heavy pressure on Union Pacific , with a decline of 1 # per cent , followed by Atchl- on , which went off from 43 to 42 , and this In turn by Missouri Puclflo. There was llttlo Ign of reaction even when the market stead ied. The soiling of the three stock * named was remarked before 11 o'clock , and contin ued after that hour. The slaughter of a few stocks continued to the close , whllo n number of others word dragged down a few fractions.
