Oata Actlvt ) nnd Much Stronger I'roTlBlons Ncfvono nt n Jllsthcr Level Cnttlo Demand Fnlr 'llrlsk. CHICAGO PKODUOE MAnilET. CniCAao , March 27. [ Special Tclcpram to Ian BKE.J Pretty much everything on board had tlio nopcnranco of solidity most of the day. In wheat the most influential fac tor was tlio fear of the bulls who affected distress on account of the aatnaga the con * tlnued dry weather might Inflict on the crous that bavo hardly commenced to think about growing yet , and the boars and shorts were nervously afraid that there might bo some thing In the cry entertained by the nlnririlsts. The apprehensions of the shorts were fur ther excited by the gossip about the heavy July holdings for account of Futrbank and bin associates , and tha consequent heavy op posing short intercut * . Tnus It was that fear bccamo a potent Influence In establishIng - Ing speculative values to-day. The weather map did not glvo any consolation to the bcar- Ishly Inclined. It was dry , cold and windy In the northwest , moderate and dry through out the northern , winter wheat area , and windy everywhere north of Ohio. In many points in the south rain was re ported , and that section seems to beSetting Setting along nicely. The dry weather Is certainly stimulating the general speculative activity In the now crop futures , nnd n satis factory business was done in the pit to-day. May , on the contrary , was inactive , though exceedingly nervous. It has been pretty thproughly boycotted by the general traders , and the operations In that month nro con fined in n great measure to the clique bro kers and a few professional scalpers who take u flyer at anything that promises a frac tion. The ilrst thing this morning Bloom ibid out 250,000 bushels of May wheat , flo commenced unloading at tbo opening price , tl.03 % , and by tha time ho was through the prlco was down to $1. Bloom bought this wheat yesterday on the theory that "it was ft. bet that the market would bo boosted 20c before it would bo lot down oc. " Hutchinson took all the wheat which averaged below 11.01. The price struck 91 twice , but no busi ness to amount to anything was done on that basis. This transaction was tlio only Inci dent of consequence in the May deal to-day. Fair bank was doing nothing unless through Hutchinson. The prlco got above (1:01 and itaycd there. The fluctuations were Within the limits of fl.01@1.0lk. The close was tl.Ol.V. July had a ragged opening. There was trading in different parts of the pit all the way from 89.c to 90o. The market worked down to 89 u , reacted to S9o , and then Bold to 3&c , With the recovery in May the July price went to SQ c , dropping again to S8K@'SOo. It then climbed steadily to 89 eon n weather flurry , but afterwards eased off and closed Bt 88c , or Xo better than yesterday. The later weakness was duo to reported rain in the southwest. The corn market was. fairly active and firmer at the start. The receipts were light hero and at the otbor primary markets , and the shipping demand for the lower grades was of the same active character * as has been noted of late. Liverpool was quoted easier , and the outgoings from the Atlnntio ports yesterday were considerably under the recent average. There was some buying of April contracts and selling of May at a Jfo difference in price , and a prominent oper ator was offering July and September very freely , and his offers were readily taken. The receipts for to-morrow were estimated At 217 cars. May opened at 35o. which is % o higher than it closed yesterday , the principal cause of which was the threatened cold weather. It declined later to 35Xo , but again became llrmer on the light offerings and the active demand for tlio low grades , finally closing at 35c.- which is J c improve' ment over yesterday's resting prico. The outsldo markets were tame ana colorless and without any decided tendency , and after the first hour business here became dull , with prices holding firm. Oats were uetlv6 and much stronger , with B lib'Oral speculative business reported. As for some time past , May was the pivotal month , with the longer futures relatively itoady. After the arm opening May de clined Xk'o ' to 20Kc. followed by a sub- itantial up turn of fully % c , touching 20Jf @ 2GJffc under liberal buying and the absence of any pressure to sell. The advance induced considerable realizing , with fair sell ing attributed to the Milwaukee longs , nnd ? { @K ° of the advance was lost. Boiler March was neglected with No. 2 oats to go to store quiet at iJS c. Out of the total Inspected receipts of but 74 cars , 29 cars , or 40 per cent , were contract grade. The Withdrawals from store were 10,810 bush els. els.In In provisions the fooling was nervous. Disappointment over the receipts of hogs , coupled with rumors of a deal in pork and lard , curtailed the usual disposition to sell and made the shorts anxious to cover to pro tect their outstanding contracts , nnd contin ued easily the late Dullish inclination , In products of all desonptions , though moro es pecially In pork , prices were advanced when bvor a doslro was manifested to buy. The entire trade was In a nervous condition , and the market all around touched a higher level than yesterday. In pork the day closed with an actual advance of 12) @ 15c , and in Ihort ribs of 2Ko. Lard was pounded sonio- tyhat late In the session and closed at yester lay's prices to 2o lower. CHICAGO sxooa. CHICAGO , March 27. | Special Telegram to TUB BBB.JCATTHS The demand was fair , with chances that about all the offerIngs - Ings would be sold. As to prices , there were * variety of opinions , but the bulk of the par lies interviewed on both the buying and soil ing side thought that there was little or no change compared with yesterday. There y . . 'ore more really peed steers among the nr- 1 Rivals than for many a day , a largo per cent of which were much hotter than the stock displayed during the holidays , The export trade was well represented , and tha chances tV were that a fair business in that line would bo transacted , cow stock soiling fairly well nnd rough stock generally soiling about the name as horotoforo. The stacker and feeder trade was reported In good shape , with prices the sumo as last week. [ Special Telegram to TDK UBB.I STOCKS A promising fea ture ot the stock marUct at one time during the morning was the widening of the active interest , including a larger proportion of the list than for some tlmo. This was confined , however , to a spurt of activity at the open ing , when prices ruled # @K per sent over the close yesterday , with Lake Slioro and Uurllugtoa & Qulaoy about % higher. After tlio llrst activity died out the Interest nar rowed , atid grangers and coal stocks largely monopolized tha activity , Before the end of the hour thure was a downward turn In prices , with Missouri Pacific , Heading and Atchlson leading the docllno. Atchlson dropped 1 per cent straight from tbo best price early , The trading at II o'clock a. in. was largely in Northwestern , Reading , Burlington and Atchlson , with a fairly firm tone prevailing and prices but slightly under the opening figures. lforo ! noon HocU Is land and Louisville & N sh villa became sooro active , and under the lead of the ani mation In those , there WAS a slight upward movement in the list. At noon the nurkut was featureless nnd prices were about where they started. The last hour of the stock market was marked by better buying , well distributed on grangers and Southwestern ( docks. Some very material advances were made. Atchlson and Rock Island each .closed 1 per cent higher , with Missouri Pa cific nnd St , Paul nearly n point advanced for tbo day , The other gains were : Union Pacific , Jf ; St. Paul , 21 ; New England , * { \ Lncknwannn , > . , ' , anil Chicago Gas , ? . A Sivccplne Deiiuncintion or Ilio Order or JoHiilts. OTTAWA , Ont. , March 20. When the O'firlon rssplutlons wore called In the house .his afternoon , O'Brien moved an amend ment , claiming that the Jesuit order is a se cret order and is fraught with danger to anada. Ho eaid he moved his amendment owing to the convictions of his constituents , and what ho believed to bo tbo sentiments of a majority of the people of the domin- on. Ho reviewed what ho termed the ilstory of the Jesuit order. Far was it from lim to say anything derogatory to their functions. It was true that the first worlc in the direction of christianizing tbo heataon was performed by the Jesuits , and hundreds of them , with a self-sacrifico which was admirable , had lost their lives. The reserva tion in the subsequent capitulation applied .0 all religions. Tito name of Jesuit would not bo a by-word and reproach in America and Europe if a majority of the members of the order were as heroic in the discharge of its duties. Slnco the time of Elizabeth they were suppressed in England. Their object was to overthrow Protestant establishments in England. If they were not expelled they wore at the point of being expelled from scores of other coun tries. I ? ok at their fate in France and Sicily. In 1855 the title of the Jesuits to estates was referred to the Enclish attorney general. The report was unfavorable to them. While other religious bodies In Canada regained their property the Jesuits were loft out in the cold ad a re sult of their bad historical record. The crown.stiowod them great clemency. There is no legal , moral or equitable claim * for a restoration of their estates , and all conten tions in that direction were shallow and flimsy. O'Brien ridiculed the Idea of the pope Interfering in Canadian civil matters and drew attention to a reference to the pope in the preamble of Mercier's hill. The people of Canada know that it was unconstitutional to let the operation of an act hinga upon the negative or affirmative of a foreigner. The weapons of the Jesuits might have changed slnco the time when they were hated throughout the world. The Jesuit was an abnormal creature , without Jiomo and family , and submissive to superiors. They always had men to do their work , whether godd or bad. There had been men * of great attainments in their order , but the time hud coino when Canada must know that Canada , brooking no interference , civil or religious , desired to remain British. O'lJriou then introduced a resolution ad dressed to the governor general , setting forth , in substance , that in the opinion of the house the passage of the act by the leg islature of Quebeo entitled "An uct re specting tlio settlement of the Jesuits' estates , " is beyond the power of that house because it endows from nubllo funds a religious organization , bncausca it rccognlrcs the usurpation of right by foreign authority , the pope of Koine , and because the endowing of tlio society of Jesuits , an alien , secret and political religious body , the expulsion of which from every .Christian community wherein it hud a footing has been rendered necessary by Its Intol- orunt and mischievous Intermeddling with the functions of the civil gov ernment , is fraught with danger to the civil and religious liberties of the people of Canada. The house therefore prays that his excellency will bo graciously pleased to dis allow said uct. liykert declared that a majority of the people were not in favor of disallowance. If Ontario was canvassed it would support the action of Premier Merrier , Bpoaldng as an Orangeman , ho was prepared to support the government. Ho could not join any ant i- Catnolio crusade , and , knowing what he did , would not attempt to smash the confederation. Ho was not there to champion the Jcnuita , but could bear n tribute to the good done in Canada by the Catholics. The baron de clared that the Jesuit was uu encroach ment on the rights of the Protestant. He then dwelt on the constitutional aspect of the caso.
