Indy and relatives intended to have the re

"Wo fear that Dr. Brown mot with foul

that was ifll , and in vlow of other circum
stances wo eamo to the conclusion that ho

weeks ago I got n letter from him nnd ho
said ho was enjo.v'lng the best of life. "
"To what ether circumstances do you refer -

"It Is a public duty I perform when I tes

years I have been at times troubled with rlo-
lent attacks of lumbago. They would * last
for several weeks at a time , and the pain
would reach from the lumbar regions not
only to my foot , but to my linger ends. Some
months ago I had a severe attack , and was
confined to my bed , almost paralyzed. I felt
much discouraged , and thought of recurring
to electric shocks , when Senator Nelson sent

WILL OUM1NG BE OUSTED ?
A Report is to That Effect Among
Union Pacific Employes.
It is stated on good authority that G. M.
Cumlng's days as assistant general manager
of the Union Pacific are numbered , and that ,
In a few weeks ho will bo requested to re
sign from his post. The reason given In
support of this is no ether than that Cumlng
is incapable to fill the position , and that the
management of the road has finally arrived
at the conclusion that ho can bo tolerated no
longer In his present position. How , or why ,
he was made assistant general manager Is a
question that has furnished considerable
material for conjecture ana discussion in lo
cal railway circles , and especially among that
class that are cognizant of his limited exper
ience In railroading. The ofllcials of the
Union Pacific declined to say anything con
cerning the pending change , bat it
wns learned that through President
Adams Cumlng was appointed , for rea
sons only known to Mr. Adams himself and
that Vice President Holcomb who at first
considered Cuming a capable man , has
changed his ideas since the Harvard student
assumed his present position , and is now
about to institute a change. Connected with
the report Is a statement to the effect that
Cumlng is to go as manager to the Oregon
Hallway & Navigation company. But rail
road men who have given the matter a
thought state that a man for tnat position
must bo not only acquainted with ttio oper
ating , but also bo an adept in trafllo matters.
The fact that the gross earnings of the Oregon
gen Short Line nnd the Oregon Railway &
Navigation for the year 18S3 footed up 1,775-
000 and cleared n , not revenue of ? lOSO,000 ,
makes It an Important factor of the Union
Pacific , as traflio from both reverts to the
main lino. For tills reason , it Is said , a
practical railway man must bo at the head.
The Burlington to the Coast.
For several days back the ofllcials of the
Burlington and those of the Union Pacific
have been in constant conference- Union
Pacific headquarters , but the result , or pur
pose of the meeting could not bo ascertained.
Yesterday another conference was held ,
and It transpired that the Burlington and
Union Pacific were making arrangements for
a tie-up in which the Burlington Is to rim
through to the coast over the Union Pacific
and tributary linen to Portland. Thu matter
has been under consideration for some tlmo
and Is now In. tangible shape.
At the mooting yesterday the Burl-
Incton effected arrangements for
direct connection with the Union Paclllo
coast trains at Cheyenne and the same will
take effect April 1. In this the timoof run
ning the main line trains will bo changed.
Tho'wcst bound train on the Burlington
leaving hero at 7 p. m , , will on April 1 leave
nt780p. ; m. A corresponding inango will
bo made on ttio Union Pnclflo west of
Choyonno. But slight changes will bo made
In the main line trams cant of Choyonno.
General Manager Holdrcgo of the Burring-
ton , when questioned stated that the Bur
lington wns taking stops to reach the coast
nnd that In nil probability the pending
negotiations with the Union Pacific would bo
effected In the near future.
The Northwestern Will Cnnsolhlntc.
A rumor Is afloat in railway circles to the
effect that President Hughltt of the Chicago
& Northwestern has recommended the con
solidation of the proprietary lines a nd
branches that go to make up the Northwest
ern system in vlow of bring ! " " all the road
underono'manngcmcnt. Itt.4i bo remem
bered that President Hughltt , when inter
viewed in Omaha about two years ago , stat
ed that as as soon a * circumstances would
permit the consolidation would bo effected.
It is now reported than , in vlow of the rigid
ity of the Interstate law. together with the
unfavorable condition of traffic generally , ho
has taken preliminary steps toward consoli
dation. Ho claims that In this way a saving
of over $1.000,000 u year can bo effected. The
report Is fathered by n railroad ofllcial In
this city on intimate- terms with Mr. Hughltt.
Gravel Beds Ijocntctl.
Superintendent Hcsscqulo has returned
from an inspection tour of the gravel beds to
bo opened In use of ballasting the main line
of the Union Pacific. He states that several
beds of n superior quality wore located , but
that the ono which is to bo immediately
opened Is that at Loulsvlllo on the Burling
ton nnd Missouri Pacific. Arrangements for
convoying the gravel hero have been made
with these two lines nnd April 10 , the woric
of ballasting will bo commenced. Tha com
pany will cmploy.-OO men to bo divided up in
crews all of whom will bo under the super
vision of the road master. It Is thought that
about fifty miles of track will bo repaired in
this way the present season.
Ijqeils For Chairman.
The Trans-MissouriTraQlc association will
meet nt St. Louis March 'M. at which tlmo
it is thought a chairman will have been se
lected bv the spjclal commltteo to whom It
was referred. Itls rumored that J. S.
Leeds , chairman of the Trans-Continental
association , will bo the man , and that x > this
position will bo attached a salary of $12,000 ,
u year.

vision of the Lincoln & Colorado branch.
The schedule time of the Golden Gate'
special on the Union Pacific is to bo incor
porated in. the time card. At present it is ,

General Trafllo Manager Molten of the
Union Pacific has gone to Denver to look
after trafllu matters in that territory.
The arrival of the pay car of the Chicago ,

preat item of Interest yesterday afternoon
to the employes of that company in this city.

DEED OF A MISCREANT.
Ho Changes Signal Lights and Causes
n Wreck.
Wednesday evening switch engine 11C9
nnd soveral'box cars on the Union Pacific
were derailed by an open switch , onposlto the
smelting works. The engine tonplcd over and
was badly damaged. Yesterday mornintrtlia ,
wreck was cleared up. There are conflicting
statements concerning the accident. James
McQuadc , the engineer , states that the sig
nal light indicated a clear track and that ho
dlu not discover that the switch was open
until his entino loft the track. After the
wreck occurred , ho says that ho examined
the signal light ana that , it was resting on
only ono projection instead of two as is re
quired. In this way the signal was trans
formed , placing a white or clear light instead
of green us a track indicator. The trainmen
are of the opinion that some Individual trifled
with the signal purposely , knowing that it
would result in a wreck. The matter is being
investigated by the Union Pacific ofllcials.
