Mnrch 21. fSpcclal Tolcernm to l"nn BEB.J The Moy wheat shorts wore "milked" to-day. Hutchlnson nnd Fnlrbank wcro seen ut tholr best In tholr famous roles of dairy rrmlds. JClio labor of milking the bears was to thorn a plenauro , and It sccmod to bo attended by no risks. In their hurry to get through the unpleasant performance BR quickly as possible , the bears neglected to glvo expression to their customary notes of sorrow for "Door Falrbank. " They even neglected to flguro on what his losses ought to bo up to dato. May wheat closed ycstcr- day aftcrncon atOCJfc. It opened to-day at obout 07J @ 9Sc. Uy 11 o'clock , an hour and n half nftcr the opening , the prlco was about f 1 , The oxtrcmo outsldo was $1.DOJor 3K ° better than yesterday's final quotations. On this bulirc , which was a strictly local nffnlr , thcro was very liberal realizing , and the prlco worked back to OSJ c. The market , however , failed to go to pieces , and thuro was some recovery from the decline. The other markets and the late futures in this market reflected only In a minor key the strength In Chicago May. To-day's boom may bo described truthfully as "shorts' bulge. " The boars have boon getting very reckless recently ; and they "sold themselves In tbo holo. " The concentrated buying by. the Falrbank-Hutchlnson party has been heavy for several days , and It evidently ab sorbed nil the wheat for salo. To use a com mon phrase , "tho crowd was baled out. " Anything was likely to turn the market up. TLo publication In the Daily business of yesterday of a summary of the figures of the London Miller on the question of the sup plies of wheat for Europe for the remainder of the crop year , and the reproduction In the Tribune this morning of the sarao conclu sions , was ono of the things that caused the strong opening. The many evidences that nave boon accumulating of late of the ro- newcd activity In the consumption and ex port trade was another factor , nnd the actual oversold state of the market was still another. The appearance of Lyou' and other stalwart bulls In the pit bidding for largo blocks was the only additional force needed to start the ball rolling , and that was suDDlied. This In brief explains the origin and causa of to day's bulge. Undoubtedly the great amount of long wheat bought nt cheaper figures cnmo out on the advance , but the short interest was so largo and the change of sentiment so general that the market did not stay down. May worked back to OS ) c , but rallied to 99c , and held steady at about 09o during tbo last end of the session. Right at the last the market advanced to OSljfo and closed thoro. The trading In May was very heavy , and in July a fair volume of business was done , but the excitement was less. The opening was nt 60 } c , or > $ o better than yes terday. Thn highest point touched on the first flurry was 87c. The market settled back nearly to 80c , and on the subsequent rallies only advanced to 80J e , closing at 8GUc. [ The corn market opened firmer , and at n slight advance , partly in sympathy wltn the strength In the wheat market. Thcro was again some ovonlni ; up in the matter of some shorts taking profits and longs sub mitting to moderate losses , but on the whole the volume of business was of n light order nnd mainly local in character. The closing prices show an Improvement of Jt'o over those ruling nt the corresponding time yes- terJay. Oats were firmer though rather quiet aside from May , in which there was lair trading. One or two of the prominent operators bought considerable of the month named at S525o , chiefly to cover shorts , with the receiving houses the principal sellers. There was a moderate call for Juno around 2o > c , with 25 } c barely touched , while July wua dull. Receipts and estimates for to-morrow were fair , while nothing of consequence was with drawn from store and little disposition was shown to purchase No. 2 regular , with prices much the same as recently , around 253 @ 25 > o to go to storo. In provisions the business transacted was disappointingly restricted. The opening showed n continuation of yesterday's bull movement , ana for pork the prices indicated un advance on the early transactions of 17Kc , for lard of 2'c and for short ribs of T.ltfc. In the morning trade , in fact , the feeling was decidedly strong , and for a tlnio the outlook promised all that the holders could desire. IJoforo the session had progressed far , how ever , it became apparent that the buyers had no Intention to follow * another rise in the market. They limited their demand or withdrew altogether , and when parties anxious to realize offered their property they found It hard to sell. The buyers only pur chased when tbo prices asked by the sellers suited them , and with the oxcesslvo offer- incs the prices pursued the only course open for them , and that was to drop to a lower level. During the better portion of the day the tendency was bearish , and from the best quotations established pork sold oft 27 c , lard 7 0 and short ribs I2e. The closings , however , were the same as yesterday to 2&o lower for lard , and only 2 > o off for pork-and short ribs. _ * CHICAGO LIVE STOCK. The Indiana Likely to Accept tlio Now Proportion. CIIAMIIEKLUN , So. Dak. , Mnrch 21. tSpeclaltoTiiBBEE.J The Sionx bill , as it passed the late congress nnd was approved by President Cleveland , is moro favorable to the Indians than the bill they refused to ac cept lastyear. Itgives them $1.25 per acre for 11,000,000 acres , which was the prlco they asked a year ago , and in addition gives Red Cloud and and his tribe $23,000 to reimburse them for ponies taken away from them by the government troops In 1803. Your cor respondent having Interviewed a number of the leading chiefs at the Crow Creek and Lower Brulo agencies , finds them nil in favor of the bill. The Indians at these agencies were the only ones who accepted the last bill. Reports received hero from Standing Rock are to the effect that John Grass , Gall an'd other chiefs who opposed the last bill so bitterly , were circulating petitions in favor of the bill. The commission will probably bo ap pointed in a few days , as reports from Washington stata that Secretary Noble Is In favor of rushing the matter. The com mission will bo composed of Indian Rights , Indian Defense men und two Dakotluns. Hon. John H. King , of this city , and Dr. S. V.
