fif PARLOR AND BALI ROOM. The Advent of Lent Felt in Social Oirclos. MARDI GRAS EVE PLEASURES , I lkK nnd ThHr Dear Ones IMmntom nnd Surprise I'nrtlcH Forly Wny Fnrewctl < o Kelly Gcncrnl Gossip. Society During' I.ciit. t , which the secular as well ns the re ligious world known , is a penitential period of forty days , beginning with Ash Wednes day and uncling with E'astor Sunday , the Sunday not being coimtod. During this tltno the members of certain churches arc sup posed to refrain from all amusements. This n'ostlncnco Is In caiiimemonitloii of the forty < l.i.v fust of Christ in the wilderness. The churches in this country that observe this period of abstinence from worldly pleasures oto the Catholic. Episcopalian uud Lutheran. So ntuncrous arc the members of these churches In these indefinable circles knnwti as society that ttieir tiljsonoo during the period of Lent always causes a lull fii the rush of social pleasures. Many of the mem bers of thcso churches tire society leaders or iihiy it prom Incut part in the social circles of their communities , and their sudden re tirement lor over a month Is Rcncrally at tended with a dcuicase in the number of guy events. That p.irt of the social world which Ones not attend church has long BIIICO learned this , and has come to accept the 1 > erlod of lent as a time of rest , the mime as It has accepted Christmas and other holidays Observed by Christian peoples. Lent appears at a most grateful time for the weary votary of pleasure , coining , Just ai It docs , at the end of the social season. In fact , the people in society look forward to its advent , with pleasure , as it moans a brief emancipation from the cxnc- nctlons of social duties and a chance for re- rupuratlon of several mouths of indulgence. In many places In the cast the evening be fore Ash Wednesday in solemnly celebrated in society and the mock ceremony of burn ing or burying Folly takes place. The past season IB conceded to bo the most brilliant over known In Omaha and the nud- don ushering In of the period of Lent seems like the lull alter a storm. The members of the churches mentioned are following out the crcod of their denomi nations to the letter concerning social pleas ures. True , their faces ai-o seen in the par quet and dress circle at the theater occasion ally and they laugli at the drollery or au- plaud the genius of the actors but then , you know , theatre going in their education Is not to be counted among the forbidden pleasures. Tlic KlkH' Social. Probably the most notable event In soci ety circles last week was the Elks' social and ball , given In their elegant club and lodge rooms Tuesday tilght. Among the guests was a number of charming ladies from abroad. That everybody thoroughly onjo.vcd the musical programme , the dancing and refreshments goes without saying. As master of ceremonies , Edgar C. Snyder proved himself an adept , and all these who contributed their talents to the literary en- tcitalnmcnt acquitted themselves in the most charming manner. Miss Anderson , the elo cutionist , made a pronounced lilt. She is an artist of rare ability and keen appreciation. Jules Lumbard and Lieutenant , Kin- ? lo , both in their solo and duct efforts , simply charmed the audience. Their vocal ability has long been rccogui/cd ns of the highest standard , but on this occasion each seemed to sing with inspira tion. Miss Georgia Boulter , Mine.
