reports from all parts of the winter
wheat country. The widespread and gen
eral inquiry , as to the extent of the "invisi
ble reserves , " develops a mass of conflicting
testimony , and the bulls and bears find
therein as much to fortify their opinions as
they did before scouts were sent out or cor-

that about 60.000 bushels of excellent white
wheat from Oregon is there , or on the way
from the coast , to go into the elevators at
that point , and Kcrahaw advises bin friends
that there are millions more to be bad out
there. It is not known how the Oregon
white wheat grades , but it tan probablv bo
used in some form to satisfy hunger in case
of necessity. A falling oft in the receipts
throughout the west soon is promised , and so
also is the large export movement from the
Atlantic seaboard. Hut these promises are
cot accompanied by a guaranty in cither
cose. Locally prices ranged materially
higher , especially for May. The new crop
futures only feebly reflected this strength in
May , July only going up about le a bushel.

the day. A fairly good business was trans
acted.
There was no hesitating In the course of
the corn market to-day. It was firm , and
more active in the direction of strengtn than
lias been the case for many days. There Is a
steady demand for domestic consumption and
export , and the declines in ocean freights
have enabled the buyers for the foreign mar
kets to operate with more freedom. There
were orders hero jcsterday for u larg quan
tity for direct export , about 1,000,000 bushels
in all , which -could not bo filled for want of
enough of a suitable grade of corn , so at
least said ono of the principal receiving
houses who claimed the information as their
own knowledge. The advance in" pork was
an encouragement to purchasers , and from
the light offerings it was very eviaent to
which side the speculative sentiment was
leaning. The receipts were within a rca-
bonablo quantity of the estimates made yes
terday. and 15 per cent wcro of contract
grade. For to-morrow the calculated
receipts nrn placed at 193 cars. In addition
to the exports from the Atlantic , 113,000
bushels were cleared for Liverpool und UO-
000 bushels for 'London from New Orleans
yesteidny. Tbcro was a pressing demand
for the lower grades of cash corn from ship
pers. The full ailvancn was not maintained
to the close , the actual train being J.fc on
March delivery and J4@7fic on the other
futures , with the exception of June , which
was barely j c dourer. The latter month is
the favorite with the short sellers , on the
theory that hot corn is a probability in that
month.
Oats were much more acthc within a
lower range of prices. Karly trade was dull
and nearly steady , but later in the day the
market ruled ? B < aK0 lower , with some ex
citement attendant. The decline was duo to
the large selling on the part of several prom
inent operators. Opinions wcro divided ,
with inuny favoring the belief that the sellIng -
Ing was chiefly on short account. Little
was donu outside of May , which opened
steady nt 'J7Vc. barely touched 2flJe , with
CU c bid at the same time , and later a par
tial recovery under bujing support. June
was quiet at about % o discount , and the
other months were neglected. The earlv
trading in No. ' - ' cats to go to store indicated
a slight Improvement , with > U5tfc paid , clos
ing nominally easier. The receipts were
only moderate.
The provision traders were treated to-day
to thu most exciting and irregular market
that 1ms been witnessed in many a week In
pork , for tl.o May delivery , the range cov
ered oy the fluctuations experienced covered

So far as prices were concerned there was
not much change in the cattle market to
day. While there were some who felt that
they had to take easier prices for their holdIngs -
Ings , the difference was BO slight as to bo
hardly perceptible. There was , however , a
> cry material decrease in the receipts as
compared with J estt'rdny , in fact the re
ceipts were considerably under the average
receipts of the lust few dayp , but In spite of
that fact the trade on all kinds of cattle was
slow. However , the cuttlo were about all
sold before the close. The dressed beef and
shipping steers sold all the xvilj fromSJ.bO to
$3 00 , but the prevailing price was $ .1 Od < 3 25
Cows sold all the way from $ l.SOyi2 55 , but
the bulk of the sales were made tit ? - ' 20(3)2 ( ) 40.
Some very choice bulls sold as high as $2.75.

condition for the salesmen , it being active nt

cleared early , over.xthing selling quickly.
