THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : . THURSDAY , MARCH 7. , 1880. 3 -THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , A Notable Scarcity of Offerings In Whoat. CORN FIRMER AND INACTIVE. Outs Moro Ijlvcly nt. n Fractional De cline 1'rnvlNlotiB HiillUli In Iholr Movements Cattle Lifeless Ho LltUk. CHJOAGO n MAUIIHT. CHICAGO , March 0. [ Special Telegram to TUB HcB.l The wheat , market was ner vous ami narrow to-day. The crowd was bearish at the beginning , nnd Inaugurated business with a vicious raid. May opened ut f l.OOJff , or % e off , as compared with ycstcr day's eloso , and sold down ulonco to $1.00 < , July ruling at 8SJ < c. The feature of the day thcrenftor was the notable scarcity of ofTor Ings. This naturally resulted in a higher nvcrnso of prices. Tlio raid was checked nt the Inslilo figures quoted above , May going to $1. OIK and July to S9 > c on the llrst ml vnnce. Mii.y subsequently went to $1. < W' ' , nnd it was witlt dlfllculty that prices could ho Jammed below S1.01 J.f. A few times the mar- lict was * crowded down to the vicinity of fl , 01 , but the nvcrngo price after 10:30 : was ? 1.0lJ4. Now that the smoke has cleared nway , It Is found that the position of the bull leaders , or the syndicate , 1' not materially changed from what It was before fore the decline commenced. They may have sold out at the top nnd caught on again nt the break , or they may have hung on to their original lines. In any event n con siderable amount of wheat is found to have lodged witli n half dor.cn houses or persons , where it will not settle. The people named in this connection are Hutchinson , Lyon , Uaker , Humlll mid Schwartz & Uupoo , with others known to bo long moro or less for close corporation account. This was 0110 of the tilings that mndo the hears nervous and unhappy. Consequently many of them cov < tired , and a few peed ' -scalps" wcro made , Bloom making a urofltablo gallery play early in tlio day. lie saw Ilutchinsoii'n ' brokers buying at the Btart , nnd ho did likoxvlsc , get tin if out lateral u jirollt. Tliu market was well supported throughout , but not bulled. The beautiful spring-like weather tends to the generation of bcarisli sentiment , nnd tlio other domestic ) markets are inclined to softness. There was no snap or spirit to speculation In .luly in this market. Many operators and trained observers incline to the opinion that the largo holders do not want higher prices in the near future , but that they will bo likely to protect the market from being raided down seriously from the current range. The theory Is that the Fairbanks party , while strong in the faith that tliera is not moro whor.t In the western country outside of tlio principal points of accumulation , than will Do needed for bread and seed , nro nevertheless not over anxious to stand us targets for all the loose wheat in sight , and that they pre fer to keep prices down around $1.00 until t'io surplus now available is absorbed. They do not want to take any moro cash wheat than they have too , presumably , and do not like to maintain prices high enough to attract grain hero un naturally. in other words , tboy do not care to hold values up for other fellows' benefit. This reasoning is based on the presumption that wheat is to be eventually boomed for Borne future month , "whether or no ; that it is to ndvunco oji merit if It , will , and by mus cular propulsion if It must. " Thus it will bo seen that u scarecrow has again been ob truded into vlow. May wheat closed nt S1.01X nnd July at SO'ic. As compared with yesterday tills shows almost no change whatever. July ranged nt SSJ @Slc. The volume of trade in the pit was only moder ate , nnd it did not scorn to bo general .in its character. Corn averaged firmer to-day , but trading was inactive. The receipts were twenty- Devon cars in excess of yesterday's estimates , and tlio proportion of No. 2 was about 18 per cent of the whole , nnd to-tnorrow's receipts wcro estimated to nhow 232 cars. These estimates have of late run considerably behind the re sult , and their innccurucy is causing specu lators to ignore their predictions. The English market was quoted ilrm nt London and barely steady at Liverpool. The de mand from the exporters at New York was reported to bo good. Clearances were of fair volume from that and other Atlantic ports yesterday , nnd 10-1.000 bush'ols in addition cleared from Now Orleans to Kouen. There was a good demand from shippers nt this point , mid there is no present sign of weak ening in the consumptive demand. The short sellers are now displaying less confi dence in their reircnt opinion of the market in view of the probable small receipts be cause of the deplorable present condition of the roads in the country. The local traders had command of thn market nnd were not Inclined to do much business. The principal fenturo continues to be the active demand for cash corn for immediate use. Oats wore moro active nt a fractional de cline , with the Interest again centered In May , The opening was dull , with the month named at 27&e , and under free selling by several prominent operators a Jii'c decline ensued , with sparing sales at 20c and a partial recovery and liberal trading around t7c. ! The buying was chlolly for account of shorts , with light business recorded in June OT ? < fdJ ? < j0 discount. The receipts nnd esti mates wcro both only moderate , but nothing was recorded as withdrawn from store , with Bales of No. ii to go there ut 2fl.J.i@-5l&c , or as inucli as yesterday. Provisions wore ngain bullish In their movements -The outsldo buying of the ear lier days of the week was more than re peated , nnd almost from the start the sellers were favored with a much better market than they anticipated. Activity was the rule , the changes experienced in prices were ono-sidcd in 'Character , nnd the closings till nround indicated a substantial advance. In mess pork the appreciation actually estab lished amounted to S MSTic , and iu both lard nndihort ribs to 7 (3lOc. ( CHICAGO IIVK sroun Cincuoo , March ( i. [ Special Telegram to Tin ? Heavy cattle , not of flr.o quality , were much neglected , and poor to medium cattle generally sold ( it lower prices. There has been no life or sat isfaction in the market this week.
