THE UcB.1 The wheat , market was "K.in-y"
nround the opening , and prices wcro npnrc

tlin snap and fiz ; did not last. The tone gel
weak later , and the "peg" wai necessary tc
the prevention of a break. The news wai
rather bullish at the start , Uccrbohtn made
the decrease 1,008,000 bushels In the ntnounl
on passage , and the reports from the sea
board were that the exports of Hour from
New York and Haltimoro yesterday footei
tip 10,000 barrel ? , New York supplementing
this by the shipment of OO.OOJ bushels o !
wheat. Then again , "tips" were out that
wheat was going higher. The open support
Riven the market at the close yesterday by
F.tlrbank may have been the origin of these
tips ; at any rate , they wcro allo.it and in cir
culation. This sort of market Intelligence
served to put the price of May
wheat up to 8I.09J.C. It opened nl
S1.03X , or % c over yesterday's cloio , with
July olllclally quoted nt U4 > fc , though lew
trades wcto made above 'Jl ? c. At the
"hardest" point of the morning Ulooti
Jumped on the market with hob-nailed .shoes ,
using Irwin & Qrcen as his brokers , lie
liad heard that the big 000,000 bushel wheni
deal had fallen through on account of the
failure of the wheat to coino up to tha stand
ard of the samples upon which the snle hnd
been made. The report was false , and grew
out of the refusal of the elevator people to
let the Inter Ocean take on a load until the
principals , Messrs. Mathews and .Tames ,
could see the wheat. The gentlemen did
not reach the dock until dark last night , too
late to look nt the wheat. They wcro on
hand this morning , and were highly pleased
with the quality of the grain. Tim vessel
wasuccorJingly loaded this forenoon. Out of
tills Incident sprang the report on which
Uloom and Ins friends operated , and'which
resulted in n break of % c from the top. This
loss was partially recovered before the end
of the day , but the raid loft a weak under
tone through the larger part of the session.
An enterprising commission merchant had
Borne samples of California wheat sa 'change ,
upon which ho was trying to got protltublo
bids , with a view to bringing some here.
"With occasional reaction May wheat broke
from ei.OO' ' to SI.OO& The bottom was
reached shortly before 1 o'clock. The re
covery was slow and seemingly forced , The
early bulge satisfied the floor traders that
the nervous and timid short interest was not
large or dangerous and the fact that Hour
nnd wheat is going out of the country in
accelerated volume found its offset ia the
ttioucht that the export business is beinjr
done on a vastly cheaper basis than Chicago
prices , und to the additional fact that the
receipts ut this point prove that values
nio attracting cash property from
all points within a reasonable circumference
of Ctne.igo , cast as well us west. This Is a
peed thing for the country holders of wheat ,
but it docs not induce speculators to Invest ,
except upon the theory of nimiipuiution ,
Ijiiter In the day there cumo reports that
considerable now business was being done
at the seaboard forforeicn account , and color
was given to those statements by unquali-
llcdly strong cables from both the English and
continental markets. Dlspatfhcs wcro also
received raising the total amount , of Hour
cleared from the Atlantic ports to tiO.OOO bar
rels. The bears started the story that this
flour is being shipped to Liverpool and Lon-
don'to take advantage of cheap storage at
those points. This was stamped as "thin"
by those bcstqualilicd to Judge as to the facts.
The market took en n tone of greater llrm-
ness toward the end , May running up to
? l.tS ) } , but reacting to $1.07 % . The close
was fl.OSX. Ouaged by the clos
ings , the market shows no especial
change from yesterday , but the average
of prices was considerably below that of yes
terday. The range for .luly was narrow.
That delivery sold as low as 93 } c on the
liloom raid , but recovered easily , and stayed
nround ! l3JX@04e , closing at 04J < c.
Thcro was a fair amount of business done
in the earlier part of the session in corn , and
It was scarcely affected by the weakness pre
vailing at the same time in wheat an d oats.
The demand from shippers to the cistern
and domestic markets was likewise good ,
but was confined to the lower grades , which
sold to-day at some improvement on yester
day's prices. The effect of the improved
grading will without doubt bo to make a
closer approach of price of No. 2 and the
crados below. Trading was on the whole
light nnil of the same generally local charac
ter HO often noted of late. The fluctuations
were narrow , and the prices at the close
show scarcely any change from yesterday's
linal quotations.
in oats a liberal trade was recorded at a
M@Mo decline , with May the favorite. The
opening was about steady at 27e for the
month named , but under the increased offer
ings and the lack of support an early decline
occurred with heavy sales around 37 > c. The
tnartcel touched 27c , with a subsequent par
tial recovery. Little business was done until
the prices reached the lower level , with the
'near months neglected , nnd Juno dull and
weaker. No. 3 cash oats sold at i5 ! @ 29o to
go to store , with most of the trading by sam
ple. Out of a total ot 143 cars , 5t ! passed Into
tno contract grade , and no withdrawals from .
etore wore recorded.
Provision trade was somewhat unsettled ,
The unexpected heavy run of hogs , accom
panied by the decline in the same , occasioned
u weak opening. The Initial sales wore made
at prices lOo oil from yesterday's closings in
pork and fie off in lard and short ribs , and for
a tlmo the market rather promised still fur
ther depression. Speculative offerings , how
ever , were comparatively moderate , and as
there was apparently a buyer for every seller
in the pit , a reaction was commenced. Pro
ducts of nil descriptions showed an Improv
ing tendency , and wldlo the advance was
blow , it was well maintained , the closings all
around being at extreme outside Jlgurcs.
Trading was qulto fair , with the old boar
contingent remarkably conservative In their
operations. Cash it/opurty was also fairly
active. Considerable lard bought for March
delivery was secured for shipment during
the wcolc , The favorto ! futures with the
traders were May , Juno and July. May was
the pivotal month. It sold tll.l.yll.32 } {

stock market this mornlng.T he transactions
wcro confined almost exclusively to Heading ,
St. Paul and Cotton Seed Oil. London wa ?
not BO bcarlshly Inclined ns yesterday ,
First prices generally were } i to X higher ,
except Cotton Seed Oil , which opened
higher than lust night's closing prices. The
buying of this stock , however , was prlncl'
pally by those who sold ycsterdav , and aftet
their wants had uccn supplied the stock
gradually declined 1 tier cent from the high'
cst point reached. Well posted brokers saj
that the Insiders have been large sellers ol
this stock on the late rise , and that the low
price of lard seriously affects Its earnings ,
St. Paul was firmer , but , as on yesterday ,
buying was confined principally to the pro
fessional clement. Tim loan crowd rctlcctcil
the unusual demand for this stock , and the
borrowers were compelled to pay a slight
premium for its use , The Philadelphia
brokers were buying Heading , but It wa
thought their purchases wera for account ot
n prominent bear , who Is said to have sold In
the neighborhood of 20,000 shares in the past
week , Oregon Improvement , which has been
conspicuously weak for the week past , do-
cllncd 4 per cent. The commission houses
were less bearish than yesterday , and say ,
notwithstanding the extraordinary pressure ,
very little long long stock has been forced
out , The action of the market may bo deter
ring would-be operators from taking hold ,
but bona fide operators are not letting g <
what they have. The course of events wll
change for the better after the Inatiguratioi
on Monday next. It is said on good authoritj
that two , and possibly three , of the present
directors of St. Paul will resign , and in nn
tlclpatton of this event they have alrcadj
closed out all securities of that compan ;
owned by them. Armour will directly after
the meeting of the directors sail for Europe ,
mul it is understood that his interest in St
Paul has already been sold out , and that ho
proposes to have nothing more to do will
the roau. The report of this company to the
Iowa commissioners for the year 18S3 throws
sonio light on the question of how much bust
ness is affected by the Iowa rates. The com
pany derived 20 per cent of its gross and l'J.7
per cent of its net earnings from that state.
After 11 o'clock the market was quiet. Mis
souri Pacific , however , was quite firm , nnd

noon was the largo transactions and strength
displayed by Chicago Gas Trusts , these se

appeared to bo the largest buyers. Oregon
Improvement was also uromlncat , and re
