run HKE 1 The loctl wheat market was
quiet , with a gentle tendency toward u lower
ranRC In price * . Trade was lomculml bet
ter than on Saturday , but 11 Is tlH largely
| local , Cables \u-rc generally stronger , nnd
t some private advices from London reported
* hales of American Hour there at an ndvanco
of 0 < l per barrel over the last previous fjtiou-
tlons. There was some buying for foreign
account hero iind In New Yorlt , but not
cnouph to cut much of a figure. The visible
supply statement showed a decrease of noout
7iKi,000 bushels in the warehouse stocks , or
rather more than a majority of the estimates
mauc it This circumstance cave the local
bulls nn excuse for running prices up Ic from
the inside range of the carlx morning , but
the improvement did not hold. The cold
weather is not scnousb talked of for the
reason that its effect upon the crop arc not
nnd cannot bo inown at this time There is
n light covering of snow over a largo portion
of the winter w heat area , but opinions differ
on the question of its adequacy us a protco
tlon against the severe cold , suen as we have
been experiencing lately. The facts can
only bo nscertamnblo later. The other
American markets are not developing dis
tinctively independent features. They art ;
drifting along without any seeming dcllnite-
ness of object or purpose , except
that values the country over appear
to bo getting nearer to parity. Minneapolis ,
for instance , which for months ranged from
SctoTc above Chicago , is now about down to
Chicago prices. New York is not getting rid
of its surplus very fast , and the existence of
liberal stocks acts as a bar to the develop
inent of the boom along the Atlantic coast.
The bullish sentiment is stronger in UufTalo
than anvwhcrc else on the tontmcnt , seem
ingly. Locally there was prexalent a belief
that the bull leaders were getting rid of
wheat on every rally , though no good evi
dence in support of that theory was obtain
able. H is not unlikely , Judging from the
uest information at hand , that "the clique , "
meaning the Fulrlmnk party and the bull
party generally , has sold a good deal of long
wheat during the past \\ceic. Indeed , if the
truth were knoun , it is probable that the al-
ligjd clique has so far ieduced its holdings
as to be no longer a menace to the market ,
and that the deal in Ma.lias already culmi
nated. With stockb so light linn the % olunie
of speculative trading BO heavy , any month
might easllj corner it-self without manipula
tion , but it is a fact that the dread of the
deal is less poignant now than it has been
in two months With the selling out of the
old lines of long wheat and the covering of
the old lines of hhort wheat , the market now
seems to be in a faiily healthy state. May
opened at $1 09' , worked down to ? 1 < H14 ,
rallied to fl ICJk as the visible supply lig-
uros'bcgun loiiilng in , sold of ! to $1.0sJtliung
around ? 1 00 for quite a while , stai ted up
nervously two or three nines , and
shortly before 1 o'clock sold off inp-
idly to Sl.OiJf , steadying later , how
ever , and closing at fl.OS. .Inly wheat
opened at fl. > fc , ranged at 04 ( H } t. jC , until
Into in the session , and then sold off to 93' c
The closn was 04c The linal quotations
mark a bhrinkagu of l\c in May , and lc in
July , as compared with Satuiday.
There was no change in the general condi
tion of business in thu speculative corn
raarkit. The same dullness und lack of out
side orders which has so long pre
vailed was still the prevailing feature ,
nnd the narrow fluctuations show tno lack of
activity which prevailed , the market leaving
off in the end at very near the same figures
as on Saturday for May , June , and July , but
about J/c lower on February , March , and
Ap'il futures.
Oats were quiet and generally dull , tending
to easiness after a steady opening , with some
May trades at 'JT XSfiTJ c , indicating about a
Jc decline The local stocks , increased nearly
119,000 bushels during the week , mnkinr a
total of 3,6011,000 bushels , and with the lib
eral receipts and Improved grading there
was only a light demand on speculative ac
count. The long munths were dull and inac
tive. There was large trading in No. U oats ,
to go to store , at i fc , or the lormer price.
In provisions the outcome of the day's mar
ket was bomonhut disappointing. The open
ing was strong and generally higher than last
week's closinirs , and for n time the advices
fem the stock yards encouraged the traders
to look for a bull movement. As the session
progressed , however , the strength shown was
supplanted by an easier tendency , which cul
minated in an actual decline , based on Satur
day's last prices , of C < &rJ > o in pork , and 2J c
in short ribs.
