The Spring Outlook
Very ClieciTnl.
Tlio Local Uosinno.
Hankers rcnort the money market * easy ,
and the supply b said to bo fully equal to all
legitimate wants. Kates are steady at the
usual figures , S to 10 per cent. Exchange is
( inlet at $1.00 premium. Collections in the
city are fairly good and the country is im
proving materially both in remittances nnd
orders. The outlook for the spring trade is
considered to bo very good , nnd while the
cold snap of the past few days bat retarded
the movement in dr.v goods nnd clothing
which was bcginnlni ; to sot in rapidly , the
Jobbers report that the sales to date exceed
those for the same time last year. Prices
uro as a rule low and buyers Icnoxv and
appreciate the situation , and are placing
liberal orders for seasonable staples , feeling
certain of an advance as soon as trade be
comes active. In groceries the tendency isle
lo higher prices all along the line , Dried
fruits hnvo more steadiness. Hlo codecs are
llrm ut the recent advance , and the fish
nmrkut is stftiwlng Increased activity ,
and cod , hcrrlnp , salmon and white
fish nro held stiff nt quotations. Consider
able interest attaches to the tea market Just
now , owing to the largo speculative buying
at XPW York , and while no general advance
is looked for , there is quick demand for the
liner Oolongs nnd greens , and a good general
demand for all linos. Sugars are easy and
steady at quotations. Oils are in good de
mand and very liberal supdly. Hardware
and luinuer have been reasonably active
thn past week , though trade was
somewhat retarded by the wintry weather.
The season has been good , however , and the
outlook for spring trade is excellent. Hoot
nnd shoe jobbers report liberal orders at
hand both by mail nnd from traveling men ,
and express satisfaction with the situation
gent-rally. Tho. produce markets are un
changed. butter nnd ogirs are in liberal sup
ply nnd excellent demand. Poultry is scarce
and prices nro higher , with a probability of
higher prices for the balance of the season.
The flour market is inactive
and the demand Is chiefly local.

The few cattle here sold stronger , and in
most cases ICc higher , hut the advance was
due aluiosl entirely to the very light receipts.
The buyers took all the offerings and cleared
the yards early in the day.
The prices paid wnro on an average about
steady with yesterday. Two loads brought
$1.40 , and a few trades were made at W.37 > ,
but the bulk of the liogs. both light and
heavy sold at $ t.5. : ! Tlio demand was good

TUB Ur.E.l Wheat was- rushed up "on the
curb" yesterday to { l.IOJtf ( or May , on the
"cold wave. " It opened there this morning ,
and advanced to SI.10/ , working down , how
ever , to fl.Oli'4' ' , nnd potting heavy and very
dull us the day nilvancod. It was conlldently
expected that the "Rcnornl public" would
rush In greedily this morning with buying
orders , nnd tlo ; till went out Unit the hull
lenders wore ( ping to tnho advantage of this
popular furoru to boost prices and then get
rid of some wheat. The grist , oC the orders
was smaller than expected , however , mid
the soiling of wheat commenced right front
the opening , so that the big boom failed to
materialize , to use a ualdhcaded , but ex
pressive phrase. The market was
In that respect a disappointment to
the oulls. The Dull lenders were
apparently able to part with some of their
wheat , nnd tluro wore well authenticated
reports of sales for their account early in the
day , amounting in all to several hundred
thousand bushels. It was also stated on the
authority of iroro than one receiving house
that considerable quantities of good wheat
arc pointed the way from all parts of the
country , a good many lots coming from MichIgan -
Igan nnd Indiana , nnd a few from Ohio.
Chicago is uuiuostlotmbly the best market
for good whoa : within roach , though good
wheat soils readily anywhere. Unkcr got
word to-day tint 8,000 bushels of ordinary
Chicago No. S spring wheat out of u lot
shipped last simmer , hud just been sold in
New York at n premium of 20e
over May in that market , That
fairly illustrates the esteem with
whieli the Chicigo ( .o"lract grade is held.
Aside from aliitloquiotsellingby the leaders
of the stories o' the probable increase In the
receipts , the rows was generally bullish.
The foreign uurkcts were quoted higher , and
private advices represent the French as hav
ing been steady buyers of California wheat ,
oft" the coast , for thenast ten days , at steadily
appreciating vtlues. The English markets
are uuquestionibly hardening of late. The
New York advices of clearings of 000,000
bushels in the risible supply went around.
Chicago also contributed a good sized bull
item. It was to the effect that vessel room
had been engafcd for 258,000 bushels of 1'a-
cillc elevator vlicat sold last week , and that
the grain wns being loaded already. The
rate at which room was chartered was a' ' e
to IJuffalo. Tlis news was supplemented
by the author.tivo statement that Manager
Ilnrpor was shipping out 100,000 busliels
by rail , in lots tf 10,000 bushels every other
day , 20,001) ) buslols to go Monday. An In
tensely cold vavo seems to have settled
down upon the'.vholo western country. This
lias a Icndencj' to harden the new crop
values. A little Hurry carried the market up
J c or such a uiittcr shortly before 1 o'clock ,
but the recover ? WHS not held , and the last
phase of the inirket was that of weakness.

Tbe corn marlet was inclined to weakness
to-day on a voo small amount of business.
The opening wai at , about the previous rul
ing prices , but sumo lots purchased last week
'at ' a lowfcr "price than is now current were
pressed for salifand wore one element of the
weaker feclinp The receipts were not
heavy , but wire again in excess of the
previous osthtiitcs. The export purchases
in New Yorlctr-day consisted of eleven boat
loads , and .tin clearances from Atlantic
ports ycsterdu.- were below the recent
average. The demand for shipment from
hero to eastern points was good , as it has
been recent'jy. One vessel was chartered
to-day for a Georgian Bay port , at 2 c ,
including freiclt and storage. The trading
for the day wassmall in amount and fea
tureless in chancier. The fluctuations were
confined to a HIITOW range , with the closing
prices about ' i-lo { to ? 8c under Wednesday ,
on deferred' , , an ) about ' c to " 40 higher on
near futures , the amount of business done
was much Undir'lho ' recent average. There
was no enthUsusin among the operators out
side of the us ud demonstration during the
first five minutia. Charters were made to
day to take outli3S,000 bushels of the recent
purchase on Hiffalo account. The rate was
yjic , including itorage , until the opening of
navigation. Inaddition to this , 10,000 , bush
els are being slipped by rail each alternate
day ; 'iO.OOO havhg already gone forward.
Oats were juiot and substantially un
changed withlnu narrow range. There was
an absence of the recent interest in May.
which was slew at 2iK2rXc ( , while the
nearer futures vero inactive. Juno touched
37c and was liter offered at that , and July
wns salable at lo discount. The receipts
were lair , will inconsiderable withdrawals
from store. No 2 to go to store sola at 25Jfc ,
or about ! &e inuroveuicnt.
The provisiot market showed considerable
strength. An advance in hogs since Thurs
day , of about lc , made the operators regard
the situation with more confidence. The
packers and tin old bear olcmcnt were more
conservative .ban usual in offerhnr future
products , and is the bullish feeling prevail
ing forced the'-ovcring off short contracts by
parties unwillng to let these lines stand
over Sunday , letter prices were established.
As compared vith Thursday's closing , Ihe
day's final quotations showed an average ad
vance of 12 0011 pork , f > c on lard and lOo on
short ribs. _

But a trillo orcr four feet in hoipht
her weight will not exceed clrliiy {
pounds. Tlor snowy hair , complexion
of ti marble hue , ) ialo blue eyes , sunk
deep in their sookols , and still further
shut in on olthor side by protruding
cheek bones , bervos to ncecntuato an
npncnrnncu which strikes nil who see
lier with nwe. She always ivo.irs a
plain hlacli skirt , a sliort { frayish coat ,
and n plain black bonnet , all bcrupul-
ously nont. No sinilo ever softens the
sorrow-drawn lines in her face ; no ex
pression anvo that of dejection ever
shines from her oyes. On the most
blustering days when the wind swnops
across Battery park in gusts which
makes olronii men bend before it , she
paces Uio park with the air of a soldier ,
never deviating from her boatun
paths.
On reaching the big Ilag-atalT in the
center of the park slio clasps her
hands , and kneeling on the ground ,
bows her head In a prayerful attitude.
Her trembling lips sobm to frame n
prayer , but no ono has over hoard n
syllable of the petition so strangely of
fered. Then she slowly rises , unclusps
her hands , and , as if pronouncing n
benedictionmakes the sign of the cresson
on he'1 forehead , again bows to the flag-
stall1 , and then advances to the edge of
the Battery wall , where for n few mo
ments she look's wistfully towards the
Narrows as though trying to penetrate
the distance in search of some dear ,
lost friend. Kach visit is but a repeti
tion of the former. She never deviates
in one particular.
The strange character never ad
dresses any ono , and scornfully resents
any attempt to charm her into conver
sation. Many stories uro told about the
"Little "Woman , " but they are mostly
conjectural. All , however , agree that
the "Litllo Woman" ' in her youthful
days mot with a great sorrow. Some
say that her lover went to sea and never
returned , while still others say that she
conies to the Battery to look for a deal-
soil who sailed away and perished.

raised up and made to go another lap ,
when ho was put into a stable for half
an hour and brought out again and
pounded into trotting.
The weather was so bad that oven the
spectators took refuge in sheds and
watched the race through tlio window

that the blood streamed from it. She
was kept going by her brutal owner.
Half un hour later a bucket of hot water

on her log half an inch in thickness.

The crimincl escaped and the olYonso

his brother-in-law's house and de

bound hand and foot , thrown into a
wagon , and convoyed live miles across
the prairio. There every preparation
had been made for avenging the crime ,
Loftus was pulled from the wagon , dip

chicken feathers. It was proposed to

was being applied Loftus broke and
iniido a dash for liberty. Ho was closely
pursued , but in the uncertain light of
