orders , This caused a break in prices , but

was generally believed to bo of long wheat.
Outside news was a scarce article.
Tlio market cables were dull and not
particularly encouraging1 to tlio bulls. A

reason of its exposed condition. This had ii

press the ether markets. None of the other

to the commercial news of tlio day.
The corn market opened llrm and active in
the face of TS cars moro received than
indicated by yesterday's ' estimates. Tlio
weather was unfavorable to the hardening
of grain , and consequently to any improve
ment in tlio grading. Tlio foreign' markets
weru quoted linn , with a moderate demand ,
ami buyers for export wore active at ftew
York.und Ualtimoro , and they were likewise
picking up No. 3 and No. ! f yellow corn
for through shipment from hero. There was
Mime quiet talk of Alarcli delivery having
' gotten into strong hands and with a purposu
{ unfriendly to short sellers. The appearances
" from the present outlook favor very low ves
sel freights on the opening of navigation , lo

indications of strength were upset by
the weakness in wheat , and toward the close
all the speculative futures were very weak ,

O.ita lacked activity , with only a moderate
i volume of trade in the regular market. The
feeling was generally fully steady to lirin ,
with the inquiry extended to Juno , which
was quotable at ( iWt c bolo w Alay , or a wider
difference than recently. May sold at 'Jrifc
and ul J7-yc ! , with next to nothing doing in
tlio near months. The receipts were less
than expected , with only IJO cars contract
grades. reported out of a total of So cars. No.
'J to go to store sold sparingly ut 25c , ruling
slightly llrmer in tone later.
The provision trade followed its usual
courbo. It opened with a moderate display
of strength , but as soon as the trailing
showed any display of lifo the market started
downward , Influenced by tlio Into advices
from the stock yards , where the receipts of
hogs were reported larger than anticipated ,
the bears had no dlfllculty to assume control.
They furnished the few buyers in the pit
with moro property than they wonted , ajidus
n consequence prices suffered a severe break.
From the highest quotations , made early ,
pork sold off a ? ' e , lard lc ) , and short rios
VJKo. Toward the noon hour , however ,
trade recovered u little from the Tlcprcbsion
witnessed , but the Improvement was small ,
nnd the closings , as a rule , were only a trillo

chuico Missouri cattle. The general market
to-day was slow and weak at a decline. There
were some 2U,000 cattle at live western points.

day , and the market closed in a very bud con
dition. There were many single and double )
loud lots of cattle on the market ,

better demand this morning , especially Bur-

The receipts of cattle we to fair although
there was a falling olT of SOJ liead as com
pared with yesterday. The quality of the
beef cattle was not very good and the market
was about lOc lower. Butchers' 'stock , how
ever , was seam ; and the market was higher.
While the trade was not so very nctivo the
bulk of the cattle changed hands before the
close.
The hog market was fairly active at a de
cline ol .V , and although the receipts were
fully as heavy as yesterday , everything was
sold out at an early hour. The bulk of the
lions sold at $130 , while the bulk sold yes
terday at $4.35. One loud of light and one
load of heavy brought $1.40 and there wore n
few trades of both light and heavy at f 1.35.

The statement sent out in press dispatches
from Chicago , and also chronicled in a local
paper , to tlio effect that the weighing system
in shipping live stock had not been aban
doned by the roads centering in Omaha , is
pronounced erroneous. An attache of the
general freight department of the Uurlington
states that the weighing system lias been
suspended at Omaha , South Omaha , Ne
braska City , I'lattHmoutli , Sioux City and
all points bordering on and tributary to the
Missouri river. Ho also states that under
all probability the weighing system will bu
permanently abandoned.
1'nn tender Train Wrecked.
A report of a wreck of u passenger train on
the Cheyenne it Northern , a branch of the
Union Pacific system , was rccaivcd at the
headquarters in this city yesterday. The acci
dent occurred last night at Ilnrso Creek , re
sulting from the breaking of a flange on one
of the drive wheels of the locomotive. The
engine , mail car and two passenger eorches
jumped the track and toppled over. It is re
ported that the mail clerk received slight in
juries , but nothing in the line of injury re
sulted to the passengers , thcro being forty-
two in the cars that lett the track and top
pled over. The engine and cars ware badly
wrecked. _

Tlio members of the Kansas-Nebraska pas
senger agents' organization met in regular
monthly session at the headquarters of the
Hurlington in this city. Koutino matters
