THTQ OMAHA DAILY BEE' THURSDAY. JANITAKY 31. 1889. 3 THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS Seaboard Advices Rather Bearish in Tonor. CORN CONDITIONS REVERSED. on ilio Anxious St-nt To- PnjIn ProvlhloiiH n SurprlH- Strong Feeling lltiltlH Contiol Cnltlc Iioxvcr. CII1CA O 1'UODUOn MAHKHT. Gnu mo , Jnn. -Special ( Telcernin to TUB llr.K -Hlootn 1 and others sold Mny wlit-.it Inrgcly "In ofllccs" yesterday after noon nt 07c , and the opening to-day was weak at 07' ( > 797c. There was heavy selling and the temper of the crowd was bearish , but It was not long buforo It was discovered that the property w-ii wanted. Then fol lowed n hasty change of front on the part of the scalpers and an udvanca to 'J75fe. The price ranged from OTJ cto OPfc for a time , nnd from U ? o It dropped suddenly oft to tM J < c. This wits on information that the Ice nt Odessa h.id cleared nway and Unit a big Brain licet would bo released ptesently Tills Is In flat contradiction of the most au- thoratlvc advices from thnt quarter received quite lately , but Nlglitingnto confirmed I the newH and the scalpers ran the price down on It. There was renewed buying on u Inrnjo fil sralo on the break -Kent's brokers Ic.idlng followed by an advance to O e. It was ponorulli believed on the lloor to day that Kent , acting on behalf of the bull loaders , had taken the "inllklni ; deal" out of Hutch- Inson's hands , and thnt for the lima belne the Riant was lloumlcrini , ' . ICent started the break from 51.01 last week by selling a big line of who.it whir-h was covered around thu bottom. Sincu then thu market has fluctuated in a most uncertain and eccentric fashion , but to tlnv the scalp. UK crowd reached the con elusion that the "big money" was now inter ested In seeing an up turn , and they acted in accordance with that theory. It was also noted by thr observant news hawks of the pit that the bull leaders , who for days and weeks hovered around the great free Innco banker and speculator , are now lettjng him severely alone , from which circumstance they nrguo that a policy of greater independ ence Is to be hereafter pursued. This , however - over , in mere lloor gossip , and is only men tioned in this connection because of the seem ing importance attached to it in some quar ters. For May OS jJo proved to bo the top , and thereafter the price kept within o rnngo of % c bcloxv that llgnro , nnd closed at ( iS o for May , about Ic higher than jcstcrday. Taken the day through , a very l.irgo speculative * busi ness was done in whe.it. The bulk of the trade seemed to bo for local account nnd for Now York nnd other largo centers , though aside front the big scalps , which have boon a feature of the nmikct of late , thcro is a healthy miscellaneous investment inquiry to be noted , Indicating a reluming of popular interest to the market. Pt-bruary wheat closed at 1)4 ) 0 anil July at S'HfTc bid , after having covered a i ango of bS 'j@vJ ' ) < c. Trade in July is on the inciease. Cable news was not of a clmiactor to stimulate action in tiny direction. If it was not distinctly bearish it certainly not bullish. The seaboard advice's were rather bearish in tenor , though a little export business at Baltiniuio was reported U'ho clearances of ( lour weic equivalent to SlOOOU , bushels , of wheat. The interior milling demand keeps up steadily , and the local sale of oiip small lot of choice wticnl nt $1.0i to prind was re ported. Ft om the advices from the noith west it is clear that very little spring wheat remains in thu faimeis' hands throughout all tluil country. Thcto was no disposition to buy corn to day , and less inclination to sell it. The of- feiingsero light , and in the urgency of the demand , the bu.Mii.s , who were principally the sellers of ycsteiday , helped the ndvanco which the holders demanded. The export cleat ances went again very heavy and the domestic consumption nt pics- cnt prices is very large. The small proportion tion of No. 2 was likewise a souicc of uneasi ness to the shoitsollcis. The Liverpool mar ket was Hi m nnd thn outside domestic mar kets about steady. Tlio volume of business in the pit was of the recent small dimensions , with no evidence of any great mtcicst being taken bv the outside dealers. The demand from shippers was good , and nt higher than jcsterday's prices. The fluctuations were neither wide nor frequent , but yesterday's condition of affairs was entirely reversed , nnd generally purchasers could bd found at the market instead of sellers , as on the pre vious day. The closing prices show an ad vnnco for the day of about c per bushel. Thcro was some inquiry for No , 2 cash oats with light trading at Z'ttfc , or about Vo ndvnnce. The speculative mai kct was quiet , though good. Tlio aggregate trade was re corded lu May at steady prices around 2" @ " 7KC , while bids were advanced J W'i'o on the near months , though no sellers of consequence quence appeared. In provisions a surprisingly strong fooling held control. Tiading opened at prices a little higher than yusteiday's closing , nnd ns the day advanced an upward movement of considerable consequence was noticed. In n general way , and without any apparent reason save a mot o conservative turn among the prolcssional bears , the market , was BOinewhnt bullishly inclined. It required no manipulation nor undoihnnd work toad- vance prices , nnd at the close of business pork showed a net Improvement of 221rf@25c , lard of 15@ir o anil short ribs of rytfc. [ Special Telegram to Tim HUE. ! STOCKS The foreign houses appeared as sellers nt the opening of this morning's stock market. Tlio tone was weak and the prices were bomowlmt Irregular. The general list was Inclined to follow at flrst , but soon recovered its tone , and every thing advanced fractionally , Now England leading , with n fain of } $ per cent. The buy- lug of the last named stock came principally from Uoston , where it U said a prominent trader is heavily short , The stock In that mar ket is very scarce and commanded a small pre mium for use from day to day , There up- pcmrs to bo a great deal of good selling of Lackuwnuna , and bear points are not scarce , "With every and M point advance a strong box is opened. Huttcr is us cheap , choice duirv being a drug nt lOo to 12c , and the sup- ily ib fur in excess of the demand. In fact. juttcr ia cheaper than lard. This state of affairs is said to bo attributable , HO far as eggs are concerned , to the complacency of the chicks , who are do- .ightcd to have a winter mild ind open and without enow , and who .estify their appreciation of the atmospheric iltuatlon by depositing daily n tribute which 9 usually suspended at this season. The butter question Is not so icadily dis posed of , unless the redundancy of the sup- ilv bo accounted for by accepting as a coa lition the theory that the cow is also show ing her gratltudu for warm weather nnd ( clear sides , when she might nnturallv expect : o bo required to turn her tall to the loy jlasts of winter und have tlio lacteal fluid congeal within her under the influence of Jack Frost's embrace , Nevertheless , eggs , butter , nnd likewise apples , were never so cheap at this season as they are at present.
