CHICAGO , Jan. -Special [ Telegram to TIIK HBK 1 The general tone of the wheat market was better nnd stronger to-day. Thn foreign market news was conflicting , but In Its "public form" the foreign situation maybe bo described us stronger. Private cables were received , reflecting weakness abroad nnd worsn than Indifference to the course of prices on this side , but Just the same a llttlo wheat and Hour continues to drift through the Atlantic ports , bound for the old world. The local features were in the main bullish , nnd the domestic news was of u similar tenor as n general thing. It is taken for granted that the visible supply will show about the same decrease this week as last week nnd u healthy milling demand nt the western market la reported. St. Louis wired that n sale of 100,000 bushels of wheat for April nnd May shipment to Clalvrston , Tex. , had been made. The receipts at the primary markets continue small. The advices from the se.i- board Bulled both the bulls and bears. Hal- timore wired that the wheat taken there the other day for Llsoon had hiicn resold , nnd an hour later the reselling dispatch wns llatly denied. The llrst dlsp.ttuh helped materially to weaken the market , nnd the contradiction enabled the scalpers to run the pnco up again , All of which shows that the market Is In a very nervous state and easily Influenced by small things , linker , Gcorgu Btnltli , Fairbank .t Mllonlono , Hodman ft Co. got cables thnt the French nnd the other continental markets were higher , but Dunn and Warren were In receipt of ruther unfavorable ! news from English points uc- companled by selling orders. The foreign nummary comprises in brief the outsideunws of the day. The local situation was , ns be fore stated , bullish. There was a good class of buying all day , nnd in splto of the fnct Hint thcru was n heavy reallxlng of long wheat bought lower down , a material im provement In prices was scored , and much of the ground recovered was bravely hold. May wheat opened nt ' .IStfc , ranged curly from D8JC ( down to OSc , advanced strongly to 09e , reacted to ! > 8e , advanced to ' .t'.l.fe , with several Jf c reactions , broke ui ' .I8J/0 on the free sell ing by Hlooin nnd the receipt of the unfavor able Unltimoro dispatch , advanced nervously to ODj c reacted to 9J { and closed at those llgures , or % c better than yesterday , and 2r above the low water murk touched the middle of the the week. The J e break during the last ten minutes was caused by realizing sales. Feb ruary wheat closed ut U5.'o ' nominal , und The stereotyped dullness of business once moro attained Us drowsy character in the corn pit. Speculative trading was ngain conllned to the local operators , and fluctua tions wore too narrow to exelto nny outside intercat. The English markets were early quoted ns strong , but the later advices gave n quieter reading of the feeling there. The exports continue ) heavy , mid In addition to llio usual cut going from the Atlantic ports , New Orleans loomed up with clearances to different ports of Eng land nnd Franco amounting to 2W,0iO ( ( bus hels ; The receipts here were 50 cars heavier than yesterday's ' estimate , and for Monday the calculations place the probable arrivals lit 3T,0 cars. Theses were points which held the market down , although the continued poor grading is still prominently before the eyes of sellers having contracts maturing during the two following months. There was no relief to the dullness during the en tire session , nnd the closing prices were about on a par with the close of the previous day. day.The receipts of pats wore greater than expected , with a tolul of 110 curs postsd. This number included but eighteen cars of contract grades , and the trading in cash lots was mostly by sam ple. No. 2 , to go to store , was Hrm at 25c , within store saleable at 24f c. Futures were fjuiet and rather dull though Hrm , with buy ers of moderate lots of May paying 27ijc. The Interest did not extend to the other months , which were neglected , with Juno about founder May. In provisions a stronger feeling developed. Lard scarcely held its own , but in short ribs and pork the sellers were encouraged to act more independently by an upwdrd turn. In pork the day's advance actually established was 10@12Ke , and in short ribs2) @ , ' > c. Lard closed tiio Htimo its yesterday for May , to SX ! ° easier for the nearer deliveries. CHICAGO IjlVE STOCK. CmoAoo , Jan. 20. ( Special Telegram to Tin : HBB.J CATTI.H The business for the week opened favorably for producers and talesmen , ns the run was light on Monday nnd Tuesday , mid under this influcncu there was n slight upturn , some salesmen quoting nn advance of lOdfilSc at the close on Tues day. Hut the Improvement was short-lived. On Wednesday the floodgates were again opened , nnd under 12,500 head for that day nnd n still larger number recorded for Thurs day , prices dropped downward oven moro rupldly than they had advanced. On Friday ordinary to good 1000 to 1250-lb steers sold nt $3.00@3.50 , while good to choice 1300 to 1600- Ib steers were slow at f3G5@3.T > , Never be fore did ouch low prices prevail at this time of the year , and if wo except lustyonr , there wns never a time in the nn- nnls of trade when equally good cattle could bo bought as cheap. To-day there was the usual Saturday market , n light run nnd a light demand , with little or no variation in values ns compared with Friday. The ad vance gained at the beginning of the week in butchers' and cannors' stock was well sup ported until the latter part of the week , and then disappeared. ( HOOB During the week Just closed there was n big battle between the longs nnd the thorts in provlsioni ) on the board nf trade , the shorts , or the. party that believed in lowei-'pricos for January , had "nlnrfjo ma jority , " This unusunl turn had the effect of lending the prices on packing sorts down to the lowest this season so far , nnd this In tha face of n very light supply. The receipts long since ceased to cut any figure in shap ing the ui r so of prices , With the run icarcoly half ns largo as for the previous ivcok , the prices steadily declined until they reached n point fully 30 cents below - low the quotations of last week. Obviously the present condition of the mar ket is not warranted by the existing sur rounding conditions. Packers nro bunking n the future. They argue that the big corn crop will innka hogs plentiful and cheap by md by , nnd they are anticipating nn Inevi table decline. Present prices look very low , when compared with those- cur rent a few weeks ago , but they nro still high enough to enable hosr raisers to continue business at a profit. 1'o-day there was moro llfo in the market , with n slight upturn , the bulk selling at M.7GQ4.60 for packers , and M.85@4.87 > < for heavy.
